Social media users have barely been able to contain their delight at claims in a new biography that British Prime Minister David Cameron put "a private part of his anatomy" into the mouth of a dead pig at an initiation ceremony while he was a student at Oxford University.
The allegation was published in Call Me Dave: The Unauthorised Biography and attributed to "a distinguished Oxford contemporary" who is himself an MP, co-authors Lord Michael Ashcroft and Isabel Oakeshott said.
The act was allegedly performed at an event hosted by the notorious Oxford dining club, the Piers Gaveston, named in honour of the supposed lover of King Edward II of England.
The secret society, which also claims actor Hugh Grant and the Mayor of London Boris Johnson among its former members, is known for its debauched parties, sexual excesses and bizarre entertainment.
Social media responded with an explosion of pork puns as the hashtag #piggate began trending overnight.
Ashcroft and Oakeshott claim they have tried to contact an individual who allegedly has photographic evidence of the act, but the person has refused to respond.
"My co-author Isabel Oakeshott and I initially assumed this was a joke. It was therefore a surprise when, some weeks later, the MP repeated the allegation," they wrote for Britain's Daily Mail, which began serialising the biography on Sunday night.
The MP repeated the claim a third time several months later, saying the pig's head "had been resting on the lap of a Piers Gaveston society member while Cameron performed the act", Ashcroft and Oakeshott wrote.
"Perhaps it is a case of mistaken identity. Yet it is an elaborate story for an otherwise credible figure to invent."
Downing Street has not responded to the claim.

Re: PigGate
Poor old Aspergers boy has no idea what happens outside of his little bubble, he cannot see the bigger picture, nor the ramifications..

For more than 24 hours now, Downing Street has been refusing to dignify Lord Ashcroft's allegations with an official response.
Privately Downing Street officials have been dismissing the claims contained in the peer's biography of David Cameron as "ridiculous" and "nonsense".
But what does the prime minister think himself about the lurid allegations of drug taking and porcine ritual?
Well, he gave some sense of his views at a Conservative fundraising dinner at the Carlton Club last night.
He told the 300 guests that he had had to go to hospital earlier in the day for a bad back, the result of some over-energetic wood chopping in his constituency at the weekend.
The surgeon told Mr Cameron that he would need an injection and asked him to lie on his front.
The doctor then said: "This will just be a little prick, just a stab in the back."
Which, the prime minister said, "rather summed up my day".
Politics, as all here know, has never been rubato's strong point. Anything beyond "Republicans/Christians/British bad!! Ugh!~!" is too complex for him.Britain has a long tradition of citizens returning home with the loot of empire and expecting glory and high office as a result. When Clive of India did so and was charged with massive corruption, he replied loftily, “I stand astonished at my own moderation.”
Lord Ashcroft is clearly an angry man. His self-published “revelations” about David Cameron are hardly designed to please the leader of the party he financed for many years. Those that concern Cameron’s controversial lifestyle at university clearly fall into the Private Eye category of “too good to check”.
Few public figures welcome their youthful antics seen in the glare of biography. Some statute of limitation should apply, and does so in the view of most people. What the prime minister did, or now appears not to have done, to an Oxfordshire pig really should not reflect on his fitness for office.
The accusation of impropriety in giving Ashcroft a peerage after his £8m donation to the Conservative party is a different matter. At the time Cameron vigorously denied any knowledge that Ashcroft was non-domiciled. Since everyone knew that Ashcroft’s home and fortune were based in Belize, which is not part of Hampshire, this does not ring true. A simple question would have elicited the truth. It was generally accepted that non-doms should not be made peers.
Cameron’s use of the House of Lords to reward aides, cronies and donors might leave even Tony Blair astonished at his own moderation. But in truth it is British politics itself that is on trial, yet again. It cannot be right in a modern democracy for seats in its parliament to be such blatant rewards for donations. Such chicanery degrades the entire constitution. Jibes by ministers at corruption in poor countries are rendered hypocritical. Politics is laid open to a demi-monde of dodgy money that has always hovered round power but, in Britain, is welcomed in and rewarded.
“If you trust in yourself, and believe in your dreams, and follow your star. . . you'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren't so lazy.”
