We could learn a lot from Israel

The reason passengers at Ben-Gurion are not prevented from taking liquids onboard is simple, he says. “We rely on racial profiling in many of the security checks at Ben-Gurion, something which, for political reasons, many governments can’t do.”
So while cutting-edge sensors are used, the emphasis will always be personal. This means that while Jewish Israeli citizens and most foreign travellers can expect to go through relatively quickly, Muslims and other passengers who are tagged in the various databases as being involved in way in pro-Palestinian organisations are frequently subjected to rigorous questioning and body searches.
“This does mean that a minority of passengers are inconvenienced, mostly through no fault of their own,” says one security officer, “but we do this to allow the large majority to travel comfortably. And, of course, to prevent terror.”

There are no doubt some things that can be learned from Israel that would facilitate the screening process, but peak traffic in 2008 was only 11.5 million passengers. And yet Atlanta had 90 million, OHare 69 million, Heathrow 67 million, Tokyo 67 million, Charles De Gaulle 61 million...
Could you imagine stopping every vehicle entering any one of those airports, or LAX, or JFk...the traffic jams would stretch back for miles.

That's really the problem with adopting the Israeli approach....There are no doubt some things that can be learned from Israel that would facilitate the screening process, but peak traffic in 2008 was only 11.5 million passengers. It's very effective, and it works well for a small country, but unfortunately it's just not practical financially or logistically, for a country with the kind of air traffic the US has.

Every time I have been to Logan (Boston), they have been checking every vehicle.Scooter wrote:There are no doubt some things that can be learned from Israel that would facilitate the screening process, but peak traffic in 2008 was only 11.5 million passengers. Were you parking in the Terminal B garage?

That's the only place my car has even been checked at Logan. The do not check cars entering the facility generally, parking at any other terminal, or at any other facility where I've been (cell phone lot, water taxi area, pickups at any of the terminals, can rental areas).Scooter wrote:Were you parking in the Terminal B garage?

All squares are rectangles, but only a very few rectangles are squares. All terrorists are muslims, but only a very few muslims are terrorists.
But virtually every terrorist attack against the U.S. in the last 20 years has been undertaken by a Muslim male between the ages of 18 and 35. No females. No Irish. No nuns or grandmothers. No one with blond hair. No one older than 40 or younger than 16. And the target demographic represents far less than 2% of American air travelers.
And people who post here think it would not be possible to focus on THE GROUP THAT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE WHOLE CHARADE without undue inefficiencies? You gotta be joking.
There is NOTHING in logic, the U.S. Constitution, or any law that prevents the TSA from acting rationally, even when it targets people of a particular gender, religion, or ethnic group. If it is permissible for a TSA agent to fondle my balls without probable cause, he can narrow his search to a target demographic without offending the constitution either.
Political correctness gone amok. Another blessing for which we must thank our "progressive" friends.
Check Bobby Jindal's take on this thru Google news. I think I like this guy.

Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh;
Olympic Park bomber Eric Rudolph;
"Army of God" murderers Paul Jennings Hill, Scott Roeder; attempted murderer Shannon Kelley;
Various arsons by Dan McGowan and ELF;
California mosque bomb plotter Irv Rubin ("Jewish Defense League");
Holocaust Museum shooter James Von Brunn;
Knoxville Unitarian Church shooter Jim Adkisson ("wanted to kill liberals and Democrats");
Wells Fargo bombers/right-wing radical anti-government extremists Bruce and Joshua Turnidge (on trial this week, fer chrissakes!!!);
And perhaps you never heard of The Order, Aryan Nations, Elohim City, Christian Identity and their numerous affiliates?
So the only terrorists are Muslim males between 18 and 35. Your bigotry and small-mindedness are truly astounding.

Well if you had said; "But virtually every terrorist attack against the U.S. AT AN AIRPORT in the last 20 years has been undertaken by a Muslim male between the ages of 18 and 35." you may have a right to quibble.

Re: We could learn a lot from Israel
I don't know why homegrown terrorists like Timothy McVeigh have not yet attacked airliners, but it WILL HAPPEN. Someone who should know told me that is the TSAs primary concern these days. It's why any kind of profiling is useless.
Patdowns and body image scanning are similarly useless. The next step for terrorists is concealing bombs in body cavities. The next step for the TSA is rectal exams and MRIs for everyone. And then the bombs will start going off in the lines of people WAITING FOR SCREENING. The bottom line is- rely on intelligence (the spying & eavesdropping kind). After a terrorist gets to the airport it is too late.

Mr. D.
Point taken. Be aware that a rational airport security program combines PROFILING of appearance and ethnicity with keen observation of behavior, based on decades of experience. And obviously, the maintenance of a database of individuals and organizations whose activities indicate some areas of concern.
But the current practice of full-body scans and/or intrusive pat-downs will uncover nothing but inadvertent and harmless violations of bizarre, arbitrary, reactionary rules having little relevance to the actual threats that exist. Nobody will ever take out a jetliner with boxcutters again. That is no longer a viable threat.
The unfortunate bottom line is, there is little that can be done to absolutely prevent an intelligent, well-financed, well-planned attack. Indeed, I and three strategically-selected friends, if properly motivated, could find the time and the resources to cause a very unpleasant event for a large number of people. Fortunately, despite their claims to the contrary, the Crazy Muslims do not have the human or other resources that they would like us to believe they have - obviously - otherwise we could never have gone the past ten years with the few token domestic "attacks" we have experienced. I suspect our security community is doing an OK job, but it helps greatly that the enemy(ies) are not as brave or intelligent or organized as they could be.
Mr. Gob:
The other site where you and I both used to post became insufferable because of editec and Steve, and their mindless posting of rebuttals when they had nothing substantive to contribute to the discussion. Feel free to disagree with me at any time and I will respond as my time allows, but your last few responses have been vacuous and pointless.
Have a nice day.

And who does this keen observation" combined with setting profiling conditions rationally? Political hacks and guys paid minimum wage. Face it, there's no well trained professional force, only pandering politicians and security guards. Hardly the basis of any policy, let alone a rational one.Be aware that a rational airport security program combines PROFILING of appearance and ethnicity with keen observation of behavior, based on decades of experience.
