Re: Stand By Your Man-loretta lynn
Uhh wes...
Stand By Your Man was Tammy Wynette, (a song she wrote and performed in reference to her very talented but deeply troubled CW icon husband George Jones) not Loretta Lynn...
Why didn't you know that? Are you just "passing" as a redneck?

BTW, for the record, after Hillary made that sneering reference to Tammy, she apologized...
(But note the phony southern accent that she has since discarded...)

huh...
I actually went back and listened to tammy, and it turns out to be a kind and heartfelt song.....

It's a 'normal' human tendency to mimic the accents of people with whom one interacts - I have that tendency and have to work consciously to make sure I'm not seen by them as mocking. Certainly when one lives in an area with a predominant accent it's perfectly normal to fall into that accent - it's not 'fake'.

PS - There are lots of other reliable sources (linguists, psychologists, etc.) that discuss this phenomenon without mentioning Hillary, I just grabbed this article since it's on point. (I first wondered about this years ago, before Clintons were even on the scene, because as someone who does not have a strong accent from any region but having lived in a few different regions during my lifetime have fallen into and out of a few accents, it's something I discussed with one of my professors - a linguist - in college.)

BSG, Hillary Rodham was born and raised in Illinois...
Her natural speaking voice reflects the broad, mid-western twang that one would expect from a person born and raised in that part of the country...
She adopted the southern accent for reasons of professional and political expedience when she decided to accompany Bill Clinton back to Arkansas and hitch her fortunes to his...
The proof of this can be found in the fact that in every interview after Mr. Bill was elected President, her southern accent completely and totally vanishes...The disappearance of the southern accent is immediate....
As soon as she no longer felt the need to speak with a southern accent, she dropped it like a bad habit...
(It was almost like, "Well thank God, at least I don't have to try to sound like a hillbilly anymore...")
If you can find one interview clip when she was First Lady where she still has a southern accent, I will admit that I'm wrong...

Re: Stand By Your Man-loretta lynn
It happens to me almost immediately when among people that have an accent very different from mine. It happens whether I am on Cape Breton Island, in Manchester, in Cape Town or in Charleston. As soon as I get home, it is gone. Like bsg, I am always catching myself because I am afraid that locals will think I am imitating them to make fun. I could only imagine how unconsciously I would fall into it if I were to live there for years, as HRC did.

I tend to do that too. I think its pretty common for those who have a decent ear who are trying to communicate in the local dialect. It's not that different than trying to speak a foreign language correctly rather than using an "American Accent" to butcher someone else's language.
I might even try the local food, unless it has beets in it.

I can't stand beets either...
I'll never eat borscht...

Same thing happens to me, especially in the South. Even when I come back from a trip to Baltimore, the Swede says I sound more Maryland (and I don't think I have any MD accent).Scooter wrote:It happens to me almost immediately when among people that have an accent very different from mine. Seeing as shit solids consist of: 25-54% bacterial biomass, 2-25% protein or nitrogenous matter, 25% carbohydrate or undigested plant matter and 2-15% undigested fat, there's very little chance of rubato being able to eat anything really.Skatole, or 3-methylindole, is a foul-smelling constituent of mammalian feces; it is produced by the decomposition of tryptophan in the digestive tract. It has a floral aroma at low concentrations, contributing to the pleasant smell of flowers such as jasmine and orange blossoms. Skatole also occurs naturally in substances as diverse as beetroot and coal tar.

Re: Stand By Your Man-loretta lynn
The Lon-Guy-Land accent is too ingrained in me to sound like a local when not on LI.
Re: Stand By Your Man-loretta lynn
Gob--as I recall, when it comes to skatol, a very little goes a long way and it is what makes our crap stink. I think it mostly comes from breaking down blood proteins.
Guin--that happens to me all the tme as well. Once early in my career I spent 6 weeks in the south (Oklahoma, Texas, Mississsippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana mainly, and after a while people wouldn't believe I was from the northeast (although most couldn't pick a place were my accent was from either). And when we travel, my kids used to insist I was doing it on purpose.

My late spousal unit was born in Utah and raised in LA. He spent 5 years in Hawaii for college and grad school, and when he and our landlord (Kauai native) talked, I could barely understand them, the local accent was so thick. He told me he'd picked up a southern accent when he was stationed in the south during his army days.

Many people lack or have very reduced numbers of odor receptors of one sort or another, like skatol. They're the ones who can eat beets w/o thinking they smell like shit. Well them plus the people who like the way shit tastes.
The sense of smell (for those whose olfactory apparatus in undamaged) is very sensitive and often able to detect things in the sub ppb range. Mercaptans (thiols) and skatol are notable for their pungency. The evolutionary reason for this is so we don't eat rotten food, poisons, or shit, and get sick or a parasite infestation.
BTW, human shit is 1/3 by weight bacteria which form the natural environment of the gut. In the past 20 years they have just started to investigate this systematically. We are remarkably dependent on a symbiotic relationship with bacteria.
