I'm pretty sure people like you and Faux News would strongly object if Canadians, or Mexicans, or Brazilians insisted on calling themselves "Americans".

People who are wrong are just as sure they're right as people who are right. The only difference is, they're wrong.

Also there will be no more claims to actually be Spartacus.
For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts

Ummm, you better not be laughing too loudly, Mister USasian (or however you spell it). You've been making the same point now for how long???

Re: live free or die- new hampshire
Does this style guide actually say that usage is offensive? Or is it merely a style guide?
I suspect the latter which means this is yet another bullshit, manufactured story about PC-ism.

Quite right...yet another bullshit, manufactured story
Much like the bullshit manufactured story about how Hitler was motivated by Catholicism...

Re: live free or die- new hampshire
USian... it's so much less cumbersome than "U.S. citizen". And I thought the presentation of the news story was ridiculously biased. The suggestion to avoid using "American" when one means specifically citizens of the USA is quite OK and does not in the least suggest that to use "American" is offensive.Guinevere wrote:Ummm, you better not be laughing too loudly, Mister USasian (or however you spell it). Also the stupid newsperson comment at the end about "including everyone" is of course the exact opposite of the point being made by the University's style guide.

Is that what I wrote? Please copy the statement in question.
I believe I actually said that murderous anti-semitism was created and promoted by the christian church for 1,000 years before Hitler and he merely used it for his own purposes. Drunk already? You and Meade both?
So you cannot prove they said it was offensive, can you?
I win again!

Re: live free or die- new hampshire
Actually, I do win. No one has posted a direct reference to the style guide in question and I cannot find it online but in a different reference they say that the use of the word "American" is "problematic" not "offensive" so that was a typical right-wing lie.
The word is problematic if you are writing for a wider audience because to the rest of the world "American" means the inhabitants of North and South America which, shockingly to us, includes Canadians and Bolivians. The rest of the world calls us "the United States" refers to the inhabitants of same as "the people of the United States" and those with the glory of citizenship are "Citizens of the United States". It is a matter of clarity and if you are writing and wish to be understood it is worth paying attention to such details.
The anti-intellectualism of the Right is a curse on both them and us.

Re: live free or die- new hampshire
