Donald Trump Again Says He Saw Cheering in New Jersey on 9/11

Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump defended comments he made Saturday saying he saw thousands of people in Jersey City, New Jersey cheering when the World Trade Center was destroyed on September 11, 2001.

"There were people that were cheering on the other side of New Jersey where you have large Arab populations,” he told George Stephanopoulos today on ABC’s “This Week.” "They were cheering as the World Trade Center came down. I know it might be not politically correct for you to talk about it, but there were people cheering as that building came down -- as those buildings came down, and that tells you something. It was well covered at the time."

In response, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop said Trump "has memory issues or willfully distorts the truth, either of which should be concerning for the Republican Party."

"Trump is plain wrong, and he is shamefully politicizing an emotionally charged issue. No one in Jersey City cheered on September 11th," Fulop said. "We were actually among the first to provide responders to help in lower Manhattan. Trump needs to understand that Jersey City will not be part of his hate campaign."

I remember seeing scenes of cheering in some places internationally, (I have a specific recollection of some cheering and also women doing that tongue clicking thing in The West Bank) but thousands of people cheering in New Jersey would have been a HUGE news story and I would certainly remember it if it had happened.

Donald Trump's primary method to gain support is to pander to fear and hate, and if he doesn't think that people are fearful and hateful enough, he whips it up himself, and he's perfectly happy to brazenly lie to do it...

As I said, an incredibly toxic presence...

Just what the country needed; someone who would come along and lower the bar even further on public civility and political discourse...

He's bad for the party, he's bad for our political process , and he's bad for the country....

He's just bad, bad, bad....

that s funny. but if it is okay to laugh at trump s appearance and body, we really shouldn t have a conniption when he makes fun of others appearance. I m not saying that anyone here has done that , but the media has.

the media started making fun of his hair, his facial expressions and his speech patterns long before they were so taken aback by his talking about Fiorina s shrewlike appearance, or making fun of that reporter s deformed arms.

making fun of someones appearance is making fun of someone s appearance. whether it s a deformity or just an ugly feature really doesn t matter. it s the same thing

that was my first step when I changed my life a few years ago.

Also a lie. But I didn't notice anyone here mentioning it.

In the absence of some corroboration, Trump's statement about "thousands of people" will have to discounted as an exaggeration, but there are enough mentions and pictures of a smattering of cheering in Jersey City on 9/11/01 to say definitively that the Mayor knowingly lied.
