Merely following the teachings of another famous Republican —
"It is better to be silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt." ..... A. Lincoln

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

Proverbs 17:28
Even a fool, when he holds his peace, is counted wise: and he that shuts his lips is esteemed a man of understanding

But the earliest version is neither Twain nor Lincoln. It appeared in 1907 in “Mrs. Goose, Her Book” by Maurice Switzer:

It is better to remain silent at the risk of being thought a fool, than to talk and remove all doubt of it.
For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts

yeah I saw that stuff on the google, not exactly the same meaning as the proverb tho....

I ve been telling my daughter that saying, and attributing the quote to twain, for years now....

now if I tell her that the quote has come down thru the mists of history, she will throw it right back in my face. crap.

Well, 1907 is a bit more recent than Twain - not so misty really. And you're right - Proverbs speaks of being thought wise through silence whereas the saying recommends being silent even if that makes others think one is a fool. Neither of us is silent....

....and neither of us is a fool, tho I do sometimes present myself in that way.

yeah, why is the 1907 version the earliest if, twain and Lincoln spouted it as well? I missed that on first reading...

... er, because they didn't spout it? I know - radical concept.

And well spotted, NGF!

HOPE IS ALIVE

Post by RayThom »

My 'almost neighbor', Joe Biden, has yet to cash or return the check I sent to his home in Greenville DE back in October to kick off his campaign that, so far, has not materialized.

Run, Joe, run.

FYI: As far as my check goes, the Secret Service sends all envelopes to a mail screening facility to test for fingerprints and DNA prior to opening. I assume I'm now in their system. I'm still awaiting a knock at my door and greetings from Joe Clancy. Them people is slow.

you point out how stupid and uneducated I am, and I point out that you are a pinko commie?

or, should we let it rest, for the sake of the bored?

If you say dumb shit, why shouldn't I call you on it? Is there some rule I missed that gives you a special pass?

Here's some unsolicited free advice: Think more rigorously; post more thoughtfully.

If you make an assertion (like "John Kerry and Joe Biden sure have been quiet lately"), have the courtesy to check whether that's actually true before spewing it onto this BBS. (In fact, both Kerry and Biden have been in the news lately regarding some very contentious and high-profile foreign policy issues. Had you even bothered to look.) And it is beyond obvious that, in part because they are busy actually doing their jobs and in part because they have actually said so, neither of them is running for President, the "wondering" in your own empty head notwithstanding.

You don't like being shown to be a fool? Stop acting like one.

That makes even less sense, given what you had actually typed; your backpedaling needs serious work. But nice try, and thanks for playing.

well considering that previous to that post I had posted a thread about the conventions possibly choosing candidates other than those who got the most votes, it made perfect sense to me

I know that it isn t like me to take backhanded shots at Hillary Clinton, so I see where you got confused.

I ll try to dumb down my sarcasm and innuendo for you in future.
