Lindsey Graham: 'Tell Donald Trump to go to hell'

Washington (CNN)Sen. Lindsey Graham said it's time for Republicans to rebuke presidential hopeful Donald Trump, urging his party to tell Trump to "go to hell."

"You know how you make America great again? Tell Donald Trump to go to hell," Graham said on CNN's "New Day" on Tuesday, picking up on the GOP front-runner's famous slogan, "make America great again."

The South Carolina Republican was responding to Trump's statement released Monday calling for the U.S. to ban all Muslims from entering the country.

"He's a race-baiting, xenophobic, religious bigot," Graham told Alisyn Camerota. "He doesn't represent my party. He doesn't represents the values that the men and women who wear the uniform are fighting for. ... He's the ISIL man of the year."

Graham said Trump's rhetoric benefits ISIS in helping them recruit people to their cause. He said having traveled to the Middle East 36 times as a lawmaker and in the Air Force reserve, he knows the troops and diplomats on the front lines are very concerned.

"What Mr. Trump is doing -- and I don't think he has a clue about anything. He's just just trying to get his numbers up and get the biggest reaction he can," Graham said. "He is helping the enemy of this nation. He is empowering radical Islam. And if he knew anything about the world at all, you would know that most Muslims reject this ideology."

Graham said that what the U.S. needs to do is embrace the "99%" of Muslims who reject radical, violent extremism and have died "by the thousands" trying to fight it, and it needs to invest in the Middle East and giving people and women opportunity there.

"That's how you win the war. A hopeful life versus a glorious death. And what Mr. Trump is doing is undercutting everything we stand for," Graham said. "Going to a military high school, Donald, is not military service. You've never worn the uniform. ... So knock it off. You're putting people at risk."

And this from Paul Ryan:
Paul Ryan joins chorus opposing Trump’s Muslim ban

ouse Speaker Paul D. Ryan on Tuesday joined the chorus of Republican voices decrying presidential candidate Donald Trump’s call to block all Muslims from entering the United States.

Ryan said he typically does not comment on the Republican presidential race but felt compelled to make an exception. He then proceeded to denounce Trump’s comments in some of the strongest terms yet heard from a top GOP leader.

“Freedom of religion is fundamental constitutional principle. It’s a founding principle of this country,” Ryan told reporters following a closed door morning meeting at the Republican National Committee. “This is not conservatism. What was proposed yesterday is not what conservatism stands for. More importantly, it’s not what this country stands for.”

Ryan (R-Wis.) addressed Trump’s remarks during the meeting as well, according to a person present at the gathering, Rep. Matt Salmon of Arizona.

“That is not who we are as a party; that is not who we are as a country,” Salmon quoted Ryan as saying to his colleagues.

Ryan also said that Trump’s suggestion violates “at least two amendments” to the Constitution.

Republicans leaving the conference meeting were mostly critical of Trump’s proposal.

I know it's been thought to be true many times before, but "this time" has he finally gone too far? Will he at long last begin to pay a political price for his dishonest, toxic outrageousness?

Some other reactions:
Jeb Bush: "Donald Trump is unhinged. His 'policy' proposals are not serious," he tweeted.

Marco Rubio: "I disagree with Donald Trump's latest proposal. His habit of making offensive and outlandish statements will not bring Americans together," he said on Twitter.

Chris Christie: "Again, this is the kind of thing that people say when they have no experience and don't know what they're talking about. We do not need to endorse that type of activity, nor should we," he said on Michael Medved's radio program.

John Kasich: "This is just more of the outrageous divisiveness that characterizes his every breath and another reason why he is entirely unsuited to lead the United States," he tweeted.
NH, SC and Iowa GOP chairs criticize Trump's plan for Muslims

Washington (CNN)The Republican leaders of the three most important states in the primary contest are all condemning Donald Trump's plans to forbid Muslims from coming to the United States.

In a series of tweets and statements on Monday evening, the New Hampshire, Iowa and South Carolina Republican Party chairmen said they disagreed with Trump's stunning call for the U.S. to ban Muslim visitors or immigrants. The chairmen -- who represent the first three states to vote in the GOP presidential primary -- don't officially endorse candidates, but their thoughts behind the scenes can send messages to activists who look to them for guidance.

Matt Moore, the Republican chair in South Carolina, was the most outspoken against Trump's plan, which was criticized by most of his Republican rivals.

"As a conservative who truly cares about religious liberty, Donald Trump's bad idea and rhetoric send a shiver down my spine," he tweeted. "American exceptionalism means always defending our inalienable rights, not attacking them when it's politically convenient."

And that well known left-wing sissy boy, Dick Cheney:
Former Vice President Dick Cheney condemned GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump’s proposal to ban Muslims from entering the U.S.

In an interview with conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt, Cheney said the plan, which Trump announced Monday, “goes against everything we stand for and believe in.”

“I mean, religious freedom has been a very important part of our history and where we came from,” he added.

Donald Trump Says No Muslims Allowed, ‘Christians Only’ Republicans Appalled

Is this the Trumpiest Trump that Trump ever Trumped? Who can even tell anymore? At least it has provided his rivals another glorious moment to pretend they are not JUST AS BAD AS TRUMP, but with less charisma.

Image

Hinged and Serious One Jeb! Bush is quite offended by Trump suggesting we should keep out the Muslims, which is entirely different from Jeb’s plan to only accept Christian refugees, who are inherently good and harmless, bro, because Christian.

Ted Cruz also wants the record to reflect banning Muslims is not his policy, even though he too would like to let in only Christian foreigners, because he can personally vouch for every single one of them. They’re the good guys. Cruz is far more delicate about barely distancing himself from Trump, though, because maybe Mr. Trump will pick him for VP, pretty please.

Ben Carson, who has previously said he “would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation” because a Muslim president would be unconstitutional, doesn’t support a religious test for entry into America. But it’s hard to give him credit for his moral superiority to Trump when he thinks there is a religious test for the Oval Office.

While we’re having the medals engraved for Cruz and Bush and Carson for feigning slightly more humanity than Donald Trump, we’ll pick up somethin’ nice for John “You know, the moderate one!” Kasich too:

Image

Don’t forget to save some outrage, Gov. Kasich, for the divisive sombitch who suggested creating a new federal agency to spread “Judeo-Christian Western values” throughout Muslimland. You might have heard of him. His name is Gov. Kasich.

"Kaili"? That's awful close to "Kalil". An investigation is called for, at once! Hey, and didja ever notice that "hadji" (one on the pilgrimage to Mecca) is just "jihad" rearranged? Huh?! So when they chant "hadji hadji hadji hadji" at soccer matches, which is un-American anyway as a sport, it's actually a call to jihad? Huh?

That's the boldest statement any Republican -- in or out of the race -- has said so far. Who knows who's next that will grow a pair? My guess... Carly Fiorina.

Lindsey Graham for president.

1. As I've long suspected, SueU = Wonkette. They write *exactly* alike....

2. This (from Sue/Wonk's article above):
From Trump to Kasich and every also-ran in between, they are all wrong. There is no religious test to be an American, and the United States government cannot do religion to you. The Constitution says so. Full stop.

This will not do much damage to Trump (if any).
It's bizarro world where up means down and yes means no.

They had an opportunity to distance themselves from the nutcase teabaggers 2 years ago, (or was it three now?) but instead of using that opportunity to clean up a lot of policies which are clearly wrong on the facts, morally evil, and even electorally harmful, Boehner pussied out and said "they aren't that different".

Given two choices they will take the coward's way out every time. They'll never give up that huge bloc of voters, the naive racists and uneducated religious bigots following after Trump. And I can't see anyone on their side being willing to exercise actual leadership and do the hard work of explaining to those voters why they are mistaken.

unsolicited political prediction...

neither Lindsey graham (cracker) nor Bernie (belt) sanders will ever be elected to office in their respective states again.

graham and mc cain, brothers in barminess, never met a war they didn t like

I actually don t have a lot of problems with graham s politics, but the establishment attack dog role that he has played since his candidacy lost viability is sad to watch.

go have a mint julep, dude. if you can t run with the big dogs, stay on the porch....

the other candidates' time would be better spent promoting themselves, rather than attacking Donald trump.

they are handing him the nomination on a silver platter.

Kasich has really disappointed me, it seems that he has begun to run as a candidate for bush s VP.

he should have thrown off his establishment shackles and won this damned race
