I realize that Chicago is a corrupt city , but...,

do the police in Chicago regularly execute criminals?

I find it hard to believe, but I ve watched one execution on tv and the people in the streets of Chicago seem like genuine people, for the most part.

they don t seem to be the same revolutionary and criminal types that were in the streets of ferguson.

I m asking...., not saying. I am concerned

It has turned out that the DA's office has sat on not one, not two, but now a third video...

That apparently will not be released until January....

It's a real mess...

But having watched part of the protest yesterday, I agree, the folks who were out there yesterday were definitely not the type to go on a rampage...

It was a very racially mixed crowd, with what looked to be a lot of college kids, some folks in their 30s and 40s, and a smattering of old hippies...

Nobody decked out in Ninja black and ski masks...

I heard on the news just a few minutes ago that there were no instances of violence or vandalism, and not one single arrest...

Rahm Emanuel however, is in deep doo doo:

Chicago has been in a state of unrest since the release of dashboard-camera footage of the fatal police shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald, and on Wednesday morning Mayor Rahm Emanuel tried to calm the situation by apologizing for police misconduct that took place on his watch. Instead, his speech set off the most intense protests since the officer who shot the teen was charged with murder, and led to Chicago lawmakers introducing legislation that would create a procedure to hold a recall election.

Emanuel’s approval rating has plummeted to 18 percent. Today, there is no real mechanism in the state constitution to remove him from office. The only way to do so would be to pass a recall bill in the city council and get Emanuel to sign off on it.

But Emanuel refuses to step down, so it is unlikely that he will agree to sign such a bill. [no duh]In the past few weeks, he has tried to save face by establishing a new police task force and terminating Superintendent Garry McCarthy. He also announced the expansion of the CPD’s body camera program.

As protests gain momentum in Chicago, State Rep. La Shawn Ford (D) just introduced legislation in Springfield that would make the recall process less difficult. Under House Bill 4356, 88,610 signatures would have to be collected, including 50 from each ward in the city, for the Board of Elections to host a special recall election. If the current mayor is recalled, a separate election will be held for prospective candidates. The vice mayor will lead the city until the new mayor is elected and sworn in.

Ordinarily you wouldn't think that the Democratic controlled Illinois legislature would turn on the recently re-elected Democratic mayor of Chicago, and smooth the path for his recall...

But with Democratic legislators from the city at the forefront of pushing this effort, these are not ordinary times...

Considering that this is Rahm Emanuel, I have one word to describe his predicament:

Karma...

Wouldn't it be nice if he had a little integrity and was willing to step down voluntarily because he has disgraced himself?

"Integrity" and "Rahm Emmanuel" have never been contained within the same sentence. Or the same paragraph. Or the same space-time continuum. Yeah, it would be nice...but I'll settle for a little bit of Instant Karma....

My thinking is that it's 50-50 that Emanuel has enough dirt on enough members of the Illinois state legislature to stave off this bill from being passed... (knowing "where the bodies are buried" has always been one of Rahm's strongest talents)

If it turns out he doesn't, I suspect he may very well resign...

Not out of any sudden burst of integrity, but because he's certainly a smart enough politician to realize that getting 89,000 signatures for a recall in a city of nearly three million in this environment would be a snap...

And guys with an 18% approval rating who find themselves on a recall ballot don't stand the world's greatest chance of prevailing...

At that point, with the alternative being near certain removal, he'd probably prefer to go out claiming he was leaving because:

"I have decided that my truly taking responsibility requires that I prove it not just with words, but with deeds. So, in order to spare the city I love further distraction from focusing on the serious issues that must be addressed, I have decided to step down"...

That way he can go out looking like the dignified, noble, penitent martyr, (and in his own mind at least, perhaps preserve the potential for a "come back" at some point down the road) rather then as "the guy they had to pry out of City Hall with The Jaws of Life"...

Of course he absolutely positively won't take that "High Road" unless he's completely convinced the jig is up...

So far he's tried to save his ass by apologizing profusely, promising to suddenly become a vigorous reformer, (Hey Rahm, you didn't just get the job...where have you been for the past four years?) and throwing the Police Superintendent under the bus...

He held the video until after the election.

It does happen.

If a person had integrity he probably would not allow himself to get involved in politics (as it is practiced today) in the first place.
I tend to rank politicians as a group just slightly below used car salesmen, telemarketers, and a couple of lawyers it was my misfortune to have been forced to deal with following the passing of my mother, and slightly above TV evangelists like Crapflow Dollar and pedophiles.

Exactamundo. And a big issue in the mayoral election was police responsibility and accountability. Chuy Garcia was able to force a runoff even without the video; he was was royally screwed by the mayor's decision to cover this up. This is something which definitely would have changed the election results and it's despicable that Rahm Emmanuel decided to cover it up in order to get reelected.

Agreed. Do we know he'd seen it? I was under the impression the prosecutor sat on it until it was ordered released by the court.
