cologne never smelled so bad

Post by wesw »

The mayor of Cologne has summoned police for crisis talks after about 80 women reported sexual assaults and muggings by men on New Year's Eve.

The scale of the attacks on women at the city's central railway station has shocked Germany. About 1,000 drunk and aggressive young men were involved.

City police chief Wolfgang Albers called it "a completely new dimension of crime". The men were of Arab or North African appearance, he said.

Women were also targeted in Hamburg.

But the Cologne assaults - near the city's iconic cathedral - were the most serious, German media report. At least one woman was raped, and many were groped.

Most of the crimes reported to police were robberies. A volunteer policewoman was among those sexually molested.

The pretty Christmas market and medieval setting may look idyllic, but at Christmas and New Year the area around Cologne Cathedral is a notorious danger zone when it comes to pickpockets and theft.

Now the sexual harassment, and in one case rape, of dozens of women has shocked Germany.

What is particularly disturbing is that the attacks appear to have been organised. Around 1,000 young men arrived in large groups, seemingly with the specific intention of carrying out attacks on women.

Police in Hamburg are now reporting similar incidents on New Year's Eve in the party area of St Pauli. One politician says this is just the tip of the iceberg.

And there are real concerns about what will happen in February when the drunken street-parties of carnival season kick off.

Cologne will stage carnival events in February, with hundreds of thousands of revellers expected in the streets, as on New Year's Eve.

The police chief said "the assailants' behaviour is a real concern for me, also because of the carnival".

Police were deployed outside the central station because of the crowds on New Year's Eve, but failed to spot the many attacks, according to reports. There are also fears that a number of women did not report assaults.

'Monstrous' assaults

Cologne Mayor Henriette Reker said the attacks were "monstrous". "We cannot allow this to become a lawless area," she said, insisting that visitors could not come to the city fearing attack.

German Justice Minister Heiko Maas tweeted that "we won't tolerate these abhorrent assaults on women - all those responsible must be brought to justice".

One man described how his partner and 15-year-old daughter were surrounded by an enormous crowd outside the station and he was unable to help. "The attackers grabbed her and my partner's breasts and groped them between their legs."

A British woman visiting Cologne said fireworks had been thrown at her group by men who spoke neither German nor English. "They were trying to hug us, kiss us. One man stole my friend's bag," she told the BBC. "Another tried to get us into his 'private taxi'. I've been in scary and even life-threatening situations and I've never experienced anything like that."

The justice minister warned against linking the crimes to the issue of migrants and refugees.

I missed the bit where it said that they were Muslims wesw...
Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?

From the article that was linked in the first post:
City police chief Wolfgang Albers called it "a completely new dimension of crime".  The men were of Arab or North African appearance, he said.
A British woman visiting Cologne said fireworks had been thrown at her group by men who spoke neither German nor English.
A policeman who was outside Cologne station during the New Year's Eve trouble told the city's Express news website that he had detained eight suspects.  "They were all asylum seekers, carrying copies of their residence certificates," he said.

the mayor of cologne suggested that the women follow "a code of conduct" for their safety. they should travel in groups and keep strange men at "arms length"

merkel says that they must accept that immigrants are "more criminal"

Germany is lost. france and Belgium are under siege , Britain has the barbarians at the gate.

they have welcomed their destroyers and are facilitating their own destruction thru silence and secrecy.

the truth is not welcome.

The number of reported sexual assaults by Muslim immigrants on New Year's Eve is now over 500.

Just a group of harmless yoots, looking for a better life.

Riiiiiiiiiight.

And from what I have read, Merkel and the gov elite are more worried about the backlash than the crime.
Proper vetting is an illusion. Lifestyles and beliefs are too different for assimilation.

Oldr--tell me, is there any way one could vet for this? There are jerks in any group you can name, and these are some of the biggest jerks, but you could not ell it in advance.

Not, FWIW, is rape an Islamic (or Arabic or Persian or other middle eastern) lifestyle or belief SFAIK (if you know differently, I'd like to hear it). By all means, let's track these jerks down and treat them like the criminals they are (including jailing and deporting them if that's what the law provides for); but I fail to see how this leads to your conclusion that the "beliefs are too different for assimilation".

I don'tknow if these types can be vetted. But to hear the govs tell it they have the "system in place".
I still maintain they need to be kept out. Too much of a culture clash in addition to possible ISIS plants.
Safe zones in their home countries is what I would root for. Where is the UN when they are needed? Oh wait, climate change is a bigger problem. They need to keep on that. :shrug

I don't see any cover-up. I did see police actually conducting investigations before a rush to judgment, however.

There was a good interview this morning on NPR with a German journalist. 31 arrests, 18 are asylum seekers, most of those are from North Africa and have been in Germany some time. There were not recent arrivals.

And oh yes, gangs of men -- presumably non-brown men -- attacked a beat up random Pakistani and Syrian men in Cologne over the weekend. I guess any brown face will do in a pinch . . .

I didn't see/say a cover-up. I was talking about how right away the gov was already saying how Germans (female Germans) should act/present themselves in order to not be targetted.

Similar to the Philly mayor right away coming out about how it's not about Islam in the cop shooting. don't know of any Christians or Jews or athiests shouting Allah Ackbar as the gun down a cop.

I tire of the excuses. Excuses of it not being Islam, excuses of being able to get guns, excuses of the women not having "friends" around who can help protect them or how they shouldn't be out partying in public so much....

Get the perps and bury them. Alive perhaps. :o

Oldr--I'm not saying it's not easier to just blame islam, only that it just doesn't make sense to do so. Not everything a person who happens to be (or claims to be) as Islamic adherent can be blamed on islam.

As for saying Allah Akbar, it's a fairly common statement, probably like a chrsitian (0r even atheist) saying "in the name of god, stop". If someone shot a cop and said "rot in hell", would you blame Christianity? I wouldn't absent additional proof.

If the amount of mayhem that is being perpetrated in the name of "anything" (seems to be Islam lately) I have to look into that "anything".
Is the whole religion to blame? I don't know, seems more than a few things I have heard about from the Koran justify this stuff.
But then again, I have read the Koran as much as I have read the Bible, which is to say, not at all. So my evidence is second hand.
