Dennis Dennis Dennis!

Post by rubato »

Back when I was working with college students I was charged with investigating instances of sexual misconduct. In every case where the allegations were true you immediately found several others as soon as you started talking with people and asking questions.

Here too; Dennis Hastert (Republican Speaker of the House from 1999 to 2007) has had three more victims appear when it went public that he was paying hush money to the first one.

Hastert has pleaded guilty to a financial violation
Investigators: He paid $3.5 million in hush money to one of his accusers

(CNN)Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert sexually abused at least four boys when he coached wrestling at a high school in Illinois decades ago, federal prosecutors said.
In documents released Friday, prosecutors detailed stunning allegations against Hastert, the longest-running Republican speaker of the House.

...
The revelation comes days before his April 27 sentencing in a financial violation case. He pleaded guilty last year to structuring money transactions to evade reporting where he took massive amounts of funds he was withdrawing.
Investigators said the transactions involved $3.5 million he paid in hush money to one of his accusers.
Prosecutors listed four boys Hastert allegedly abused at a high school in Yorkville, Illinois.
An additional one -- a fifth student -- died years later, according to the document.
Accuser allegedly paid off
The accusations came to light after investigators found out he was paying an ex-student to stay quiet about sexual abuse allegations, prosecutors allege.
The student was among four others who told investigators he abused them, including one who was 14 at the time, the documents allege.
The allegations date to the 1960s and 1970s, according to the prosecutors' court filing.
Hastert will not face sexual abuse charges because the statutes of limitation have expired.
Massages, sex acts alleged
All those who accused him of sexual abuse were wrestlers at the high school, according to the documents.
In two separate cases, Hastert massaged one boy each in a locker room and performed unspecified sexual acts on them, prosecutors allege.
In another instance, he allegedly massaged a boy's groin area and singled him out to stay in his hotel room during a wrestling camp.
Another accuser said Hastert touched him inappropriately in a "very weird" way while he was a student, prosecutors said.
"The actions at the core of this case took place not on the defendant's national public stage but in his private one-on-one encounters in an empty locker room and a motel room with minors that violated the special trust between those young boys and their coach," prosecutors said.
During his time at Yorkville High School, Hastert was a beloved coach. He was named Illinois coach of the year after leading the wrestling team to the state championship.

From Jim Wright on Facebook:
  • Yeah, about that. Look, it's terrible enough that it may be true without liberals gleefully hoping it is.

Hastert, yes, he's everything I can't stand about modern Republicans. Bigot. Raging homophobe. Religious fanatic. Uber conservative. Holier than thou. Etc. Etc. and so on.

And now it appears he may be a child molester.

And not just a child molester, but (insert dirty smirk) an abuser of boys.

Oh frabulous joy, ha ha, and so on and so forth.

Except ... if this is true, something I'll remind you has not been proven, it means that while Hastert is (surprise surprise) just another Christian conservative hypocrite (whoo hoo ha ha and so on and so forth), it ALSO means children were molested and likely damaged for life.

Frankly that's a hell of a price to pay for a little schadenfreude.

So, yes, to answer your question, I did hear about Dennis Hastert and it gives me no joy whatsoever. And that is all I have to say on the matter at this time.

Sorry, I'm not buying the guilt trip. Getting satisfaction out of the fact that a pig like him got caught, and that it shows up the heterosexist fascist for the hypocrite that he is, does not equate to being glad that children were molested. Would the author have preferred that children had been molested without their perpetrator being caught? I doubt it, so why would he presume the inverse about anyone else?

As I said in an earlier discussion about this, I really liked Denny Hastert. He seemed like a decent and honorable fellow. A low key, non-bombastic, thoughtful guy who was just the right choice for Speaker after the tumultuous Gingrich years. (And a stark contrast to Tom "The Hammer" DeLay) I thought he carried out the job of Speaker quite well.

But I also liked Joe Paterno and Bill Cosby until they turned out to be dirtbags...

Hastert will never face these molestation charges of course, because the statute of limitations have long since run out. But nobody agrees to pay 3.5 million dollars (1.7 million of which that had been paid out when this blew up) in hush money to somebody if they don't have something on them. And the other accusers have absolutely nothing to gain, they don't even want their names made public. All of this gives a very high degree of credibility to the charges in my view.

It's interesting that it's the prosecutors that released this report. That gives me the impression that they are deliberately trying to undermine the sweetheart deal they themselves struck with Hastert, when in exchange for a guilty plea to a single count of evading bank currency reporting laws, they agreed to a sentence deal of 0-6 months...Maybe they're having regrets...

Hastert is due to be sentenced on April 27th. I sincerely hope the judge ignores that deal, (as he pointedly mentioned he had the right to do back in October when he took Hastert's plea) and sentences him to the max available under the law. (Which I understand is five years. I wish it was longer)

It doesn't matter that Hastert is 74 and supposedly in poor health, (anymore than Cosby's age and alleged poor health means anything) Nor do whatever good things he has done in life (and I'm sure he's done many good things; just as had Cosby) matter. Not in a case like this.

ETA:

I'd also like to add a few words about the Alaskan Uber Crapmeister, Jim Wrong...

I wanted to say something after his last load of guano was posted here...

The one where he ticks off a whole list of diseases that we have spent many billions of dollars for decades combating and claims we don't care about them, while he sneers derisively at the focus on "only" 30 people being murdered by terrorists Brussels...(As though that were the first time an attack like that had ever taken place... )

Mr. Wrong has a regard for intellectual honesty roughly equivalent to that of Mr. Trump...

Maybe he's been living out in the middle of nowhere spending his time talking to the caribou for too long...

He appears to have lost his grasp of reality...

For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts
