Harriet Harman has praised ‘heroic’ immigrants who claim welfare payments in Britain and use the cash to support families living abroad.
She said the Government should make it easier for them to send the money home and called for tax refunds to encourage more immigrants to follow suit, in particular those who paid for their children to be educated in the Third World.
The Labour Deputy Leader, who is also the party’s spokesman on International Development, derided ‘those who say we should look after our own first’ in the recession and vowed to fight any attempt to cut the £9.4 billion overseas aid budget.
Last night the Government challenged her ‘bizarre’ conduct.
Her comments were made at a meeting at Southwark town hall in her South London constituency, called to find ways to increase the flow of money from Britain to other nations in ‘remittances’ – money sent by families who have settled here to those left behind.

Harriet Harperson strikes again
“If you trust in yourself, and believe in your dreams, and follow your star. . . you'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren't so lazy.”
Re: Harriet Harperson strikes again
There goes another batch of Labour supporters defecting to the BNP...
Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?
Re: Harriet Harperson strikes again
Surely she's going to be forced to resign her leadership position?
I can't imagine that even The Labour Party would put up with someone that politically tone deaf and toxic to the electorate...

Re: Harriet Harperson strikes again
The end of the article talks about tax credits and child benefits (which I believe is some sort of tax credit available to all), if it's just this, I see no problem in them sending money they earned (or got back through a tax credit) anywhere they damn well please. If they are, indeed, collecting public welfare payment and sending them home, they should be stopped. Does anyone know whether she intended to include the latter group.
Re: Harriet Harperson strikes again
BigRR, I think Harperson was referring to people who study in the UK, and who therefore have access to the benefits system, another of the overgenerous system's faults.
That sounds like a massive backpeddle to me.Last night Ms Harman stood by her remarks. She told The Mail on Sunday: ‘There are many people in my constituency who come from Africa and work and study and bring up their families here. Many of them also send money back to their village in their country of origin. We should respect and encourage that. International development is not just something done by governments.
‘Some of these families will be receiving child benefit and tax credits to which they are entitled. Charitable generosity has never been confined to the well-off.’

Socialist twatwaffle. Canada's got overeducated government idiots and aspirants like that, also...Stuffed to bursting with best intentions, platitudes and guilt, and for whom taxpayer monies are to be flung about with both little fists like a toddler in an autumn leaf pile with no thought to origin or consequences.
