This Kind Of Crap Plays Right Into Trump's Hands...

There have been anti-Trump protests outside many Trump rallies, but leave it to California to be the first to have this garbage:
Protests rage outside Trump rally in Orange County; 17 arrested, police car smashed

Hundreds of demonstrators filled the street outside the Orange County amphitheater where Donald Trump held a rally Thursday night, stomping on cars, hurling rocks at motorists and forcefully declaring their opposition to the Republican presidential candidate.

Traffic came to a halt as a boisterous crowd walked in the roadway, some waving American and Mexican flags. Protesters smashed a window on at least one police cruiser, punctured the tires of a police sport utility vehicle, and at one point tried to flip a police car.

"Dump the Trump," said one sign. Another protester scrawled anti-Trump messages onto Costa Mesa police cruisers.

"I'm protesting because I want equal rights for everybody, and I want peaceful protest," said 19-year-old Daniel Lujan, one of hundreds in a crowd that appeared to be mostly Latinos in their late teens and 20s.

"I knew this was going to happen," Lujan added. "It was going to be a riot. He deserves what he gets."
[So you wanted a peaceful protest, but you knew it was going to be a riot and, you're just fine with that? :loon ]

Video footage showed some anti-Trump demonstrators hurling debris at a passing pickup. One group of protesters carried benches and blocked the entrance to the 55 Freeway along Newport Boulevard, with some tossing rocks at motorists near the on-ramp.

By 10:15 p.m., the bedlam had largely subsided and Lt. Mark Stichter of the Orange County sheriff's department said no major injuries were reported.

Costa Mesa police confirmed that a total of 17 people -- 10 males and 7 females -- were arrested on suspicion of unlawful assembly. Details on the ages and names of those arrested were not released.

The violent demonstration was underway after Trump concluded his speech before a crowd of thousands.

"This is the anger people have against Trump," said Jose Cruz, 21, as he pointed to the protesters running in the middle of the street.

"It's not because he's white -- it's because of what he's said."

Several echoed the comments, saying they were drawn to the streets to counter Trump's stated policies on immigration and his inflammatory remarks about Mexicans.

The billionaire developer has drawn fierce criticism by claiming Mexico was sending rapists over the border. Later, he called for “a total and complete shutdown of Muslims” entering the U.S.

Along Newport Boulevard outside the fairgrounds, officers clad in riot gear and mounted horseback lined up across a roadway and slowly pushed the crowd down the street. Helicopters circled overhead.

Gee, I can hardly wait to see what happens when he gets to the Bay Area...

What smashing a police car and throwing rocks randomly at passing motorists has to do with expressing displeasure with Donald Trump's policies is not immediately apparent to me...

I'm sure there were plenty of folks who were genuinely there to protest peacefully, (unlike the idiot quoted in the article claiming he wanted a peaceful protest, but also saying that he was perfectly happy with a riot...) but as so frequently happens, (especially in this state) a group of hell-raising thugs used the protest for cover just to raise mindless hell...

Good thing there wasn't a liquor store nearby; it would certainly have been looted...

Trump is going to make so much hay out of this it won't be funny...These morons did him a huge favor. This is just the kind of thing he needs to energize his supporters, show how they and he are the victims, and stir up fear amongst average people sitting at home watching this crap on TV...

It is immediately apparent to me, that such is the identical level of wisdom and understanding possessed by Donald Trump. His followers and those protesters exhibit similar levels of understanding the realities of the world.

Meanwhile one leading Trump staffer is found by the authorities to be 'not provable' of charges for assault at a Trump rally in Florida, another major staffer has been a flack for the Russian mafia/government for years, and Trump himself is getting close to felony charges in NY state for his 'Trump University'. Trump is no where near releasing his tax reports. Probably because it would show his 'wealth' is much smaller than he claims, and his charitable contributions are pitiful. The latest info from this failure to pay the five dollars and file the two pager paperwork to register his plane with the FAA indicates he is financing his campaign with lots of paper shuffling so it is NOT coming out of his pocket. He 'loans' the money to the campaign and expects to be paid back by the public and the GOP party.

This could get interesting. Remember the 'nattering nabobs of negativity' that put Gerald Ford into office as our only president who was not elected president or vice president? Would be great fun to see a sitting president deal with felony charges from NY State.

A sitting President on trial for criminal charges creates enormous Constitutional separation of powers questions and other issues...

That's why Watergate Prosecutor Leon Jaworski only named Nixon an "unindicted co-conspirator" while he was still President. After he resigned, Jaworski was considering whether or not to bring criminal charges against Nixon when Ford's pardon rendered the issue moot.

It would most likely never happen. A President would have to either resign or be Impeached and Removed from Office first.

Who is this "we" wes? It looks like this violence was pretty much random and not focused at any person, Trump supporter or not. Are you saying Trump supporters will riot just on principle, or that they will attack anti-Trump protestors because they are protesting. Or maybe the Trump supporters will call themselves a militia to protect all those who might feel victimized or inconvenienced (or are even attacked) by the protestors? I don't see it as anyone's "fight" but the police.

Well some of it was random, but clearly where there was an opportunity to target a Trump supporter for attack it was done.

Photographic evidence proves that.

For the most part though, this was not a confrontation between anti and pro Trump people, (Most of the Trumpanzees were still in the arena; this all started during Trump's speech, not before or after it) it was just a riotous rampage by those claiming to be anti-Trump types. (though as I said, I think the motivation for most of violence was just pure thuggish hellraising and Trump's presence provided an excuse to try to get away with it.)

That having been said, that quote you posted from wes:
if it keeps up, we WILL fight back.
beautifully illustrates my point about how this kind of behavior is a gift to Trump, because it helps to energize his supporters, and provides validation for their "we are the victims" narrative...

ETA:

And the fact that in this case most of those that engaged in the thuggish behavior happen to be Latino makes this a double gift for Trump, because it will further enhance his ability to whip up xenophobic fears and antagonisms.

The fact that thousands of Latinos all over the country have demonstrated against Trump without any violence whatsoever will get largely lost in the media narrative, so these thugs didn't do their own ethnic community or their supposed cause any favors either. But I suspect they don't much care about that.

Perhaps, but I was responding to what was posted. Unfortunately, these sort of things frequently get out of hand only because some are just there to raise hell, not because of any politics. Most of the time violence does nothing but push away from your position.

Oh, tut-tut, but it does. It's a harbinger of things to come.

The Cleveland police persons assure North East Ohio that there will be no problem come July. All protestors will be provided replica guns with the orange bit pulled out.

Odd juxtaposition..... the annual May 4th commemoration just down the road from our house has the mother of Tamir Rice listed as the main speaker this year. Bit of controversy there apparently. I don't care - I can see there's relevance in the area of police powers going wrong... but there is a world of difference between National Guard opening fire on milling students and a couple of cops reacting too quickly to a black kid pulling what looks like a weapon.

I think the difference is approximately 6.6 million dollars to some families and er... nothing at all to others.

Evidently these days black lives matter a lot more than white ones did back in 1970

Off topic (sorry).
According to FBI reports, one part-time student, Terry Norman, was already noted by student protesters as an informant for both campus police and the Akron FBI branch. Norman was present during the May 4 protests, taking photographs to identify student leaders,[50] while carrying a sidearm and wearing a gas mask.
Further analysis of the audiotape revealed that four pistol shots and a violent confrontation occurred approximately 70 seconds before the National Guard opened fire. According to The Plain Dealer, this new analysis raised questions about the role of Terry Norman, a Kent State student who was an FBI informant and known to be carrying a pistol during the disturbance.
I've written this before in this very forum that I remember, probably in 1973 in my first visit to the USA, seeing a TV report including film of areas behind the Guard as they ceased fire, highlighting a man in civilian clothes handing a pistol to a uniformed police officer. The cop thrust the pistol into his jacket. There was a very brief comment wondering if there was any connection between the outbreak of shooting and that apparent civilian. I guess that's one report that got lost forever but I saw it.

The natl guard made the identical excuse; they were afraid.

Neither had real cause.

It is just a matter of which victims seem innocent to you.
