How fucking obscene is this

90-year-old Florida man arrested for second time in a week after feeding the homeless again

When 90-year-old Florida resident Arnold Abbott said following his arrest on Sunday that police couldn’t stop him from feeding the homeless, he apparently meant it.

Abbott was charged again on Wednesday night for violating a new city law in Ft. Lauderdale that essentially prevents people from feeding the homeless.

“I expected it" he said in a Sun Sentinel report. “At least this time they let us feed people first.”

Officers lingered in the area for about 45 minutes during which time Abbott and volunteers with the Love Thy Neighbor charity he founded handed out more than 100 plates of hot chicken stew, pasta, cheesy potatoes and fruit salad to homeless men and women.

If he’s found guilty of violating city ordinance laws — his second in a week — he faces 60 days in jail or a $500 fine.

Abbott said he’s prepared to go to jail over his efforts.

“Why do I keep doing this?" he asked rhetorically. "Because these are my people and they deserve to be fed."

In a slightly more confrontational incident on Sunday, four police cruisers and approximately a half dozen officers with the Ft. Lauderdale Police Department descended upon an area in the city where Abbott, charity representatives and church members were handing out hot meals to local homeless people.

One officer demanded that he “drop that plate right now” as others picked up the trays off food and inserted them directly into the garbage with lines of homeless people looking on.

The new law in Ft. Lauderdale comes after the city announced in January that people are restricted from camping, panhandling, food sharing and engaging in other “life sustaining activities." The laws regarding food sharing where ironically enacted on Halloween when millions of people were out sharing candy.

Abbott applauded the officers for being more courteous in their enforcement of the law the second time around this week.

“They were very gentle," Abbott said. "I think they feel a little guilty doing their job."
"Then he will say to those at his left hand, ‘You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ Then they also will answer, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you?’ Then he will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ ” (Matthew 25:41-45, NRSV)

What do you expect? Abbott continually ignores the signs.

I was in my local Wal*Mart at 8:00 one evening as they were closing down their deli. They had several pans of hot unsold food.

You know what they do with that unsold food?

They throw it out. Six or eight steaming pans, meat- mostly chicken, veggies, two or three kinds of potatoes, tossed into a big plastic lined cardboard box. I'm sure we have homeless people here who could benefit. At least there is no ordinance against it.

Not worth the liability. Yes, it's that simple.

That's a lame excuse. There's an organization here called Second Harvest that goes around to restaurants and grocery stores collecting leftovers and distributes them to shelters. I have never heard anyone suggest that liability is an impediment to participating.

We worked in a soup kitchen in Batho, feeding middle school kids who had no lunches. The bread came from a local supermarket which donated the day old bread. Until they were told to stop doing it - on the advice of lawyers.
For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts

Pennsylvania used to have a law barring food stores from giving away any product remaining at the end of the business day. That law was rescinded about six years ago and homeless shelters and food give away programs have flourished. (https://www.philabundance.org/donate/give-food/) The law allows a tax credit relative to the retail value of the food that is contributed.

That law was bittersweet for me. The Starbucks that I frequented would give me a "doggie bag" full of pastry if I happened to be there at closing time. Once the law passed I became a liability and my benefits stopped. All for the greater good, though.

I sure miss those free muffins and scones, however.

Locally there was a spat when people distributing food to the homeless were required to show it had been prepared in kitchens inspected by the Health Dept. But there the intent was not to deprive the homeless of food but to ensure that they received the same level of protection as everyone else.

Passing a law to prevent feeding people just to make them suffer is a whole different category of evil.

I don't know about that, but I suppose CPR and The Heimlich Maneuver would be out of the question...
