Truck attacker kills over 70 in Nice Bastille Day crowd

NICE, France, July 14 (Reuters) - An attacker killed at least 73 people and injured scores when he drove a truck at high speed into a crowd watching Bastille Day fireworks in the French Riviera city of Nice late on Thursday, local media quoted officials as saying.

Police shot and killed the driver, who drove the heavy, long-distance truck at speed for well over 100 meters (yards) along the famed Promenade des Anglais seafront, hitting the mass of spectators late in the evening, regional official Sebastien Humbert told France Info radio.

The man had opened fire on the crowd, local government chief Christian Estrosi told BFM TV, and weapons and grenades were found inside the truck after he was killed.

Another awful, senseless crime. No use speculating as the police are surely working quickly as they can to figure out the motivation and if there were any accomplices.

On Bastille day. Fuckers. Whatever you do, liberté, egalité, and fraternité shall continue.

I'm having a Campari and soda. For Nice. For France.

Driven over a mile. And now possibly 80 killed. I'm sure more won't survive until morning.

I'm sure that the security around le Tour de France has been beefed up like never before in the wake of this.  I suspect that by the time the riders ride up the Rue de Rivoli, turn onto the Place de la Concorde, and start their laps of the Avenue des Champs-Élysées you'll probably see more gendarmes and members of the Sûreté (the French National Police) lining the front row than anyone else.

Early reports have this as a disaffected individual rather than an act of a terrorist group. But time will tell.

TRUMP'S MILITARY ADVISER CALLS ON IRANIAN LEADER TO DENOUNCE FRENCH 'BASTILLE DAY' ATTACK

Retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, a military adviser to Donald Trump’s campaign who was briefly on the vice presidential short list, has repeatedly called on the Iranian leadership to denounce the terrorist attack in Nice, France.

“I want the Imam, or I want Khomeini in Iran to stand up and be counted,” Flynn told Fox’s Megyn Kelly on Thursday night.  Later, on Friday morning's 'Fox & Friends', he repeated his request, saying “I have called out for the leaders of Iran ― Khomeini ― and the leaders of the Muslim world” to denounce the terrorist attack.

There's only one teensie-weensie little problem with this.  The individual he has identified by name as the person in charge of Iran — Sayyid Ruhollah Khomeini — has been dead since 1989.

Now, normally I'd be willing to cut him a little slack, since the current ayatollah of Iran is one Ali Khamenei (pronounced KA-Ma-Nay), who did replace Khomeini (pronounced Ko-MAY-Nee) following Khomeini's death in 1989, and Flynn’s mistake would be understandable coming from someone with no experience in national security.  But Flynn recently led one of the world’s most sophisticated intelligence agencies; his CV includes
  • ● 18th director of the Defense Intelligence Agency from July 2012 to August 7, 2014 (and assistant director prior to this)
    ● commander of the Joint Functional Component Command for Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance
    ● chair of the Military Intelligence Board from July 2012 to August 2, 2014
Clearly he considers himself more than qualified to “call out” sovereign nations.

Attaboy, Donald.  I'm glad to see that you are continuing to surround yourself with the best and the brightest.

Well, the current Iranian Grand Poobah has a name that is spelled and sounds very similar to the original Old Bastard:

Ali Khamenei

So it may be the reporter quoting him as referring to "Khomeini" who ain't among the best or the brightest...

With his background:
Flynn was the director of intelligence for Joint Special Operations Command from July 2004 to June 2007, with service in Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom) and Iraq (Operation Iraqi Freedom). He served as the director of intelligence, United States Central Command from June 2007 to July 2008, as the director of intelligence, Joint Staff from July 2008 to June 2009, then the director of intelligence, International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan from June 2009 to October 2010. [5]

In September 2011, Flynn was promoted to Lieutenant General and assigned to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. His duties included public, private, and international outreach and engagement. Flynn's primary influence within the U.S. intelligence community was with regard to operational units across all the services, especially in the intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance arenas, as well as information technology and organizational design.
Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency

On April 17, 2012, President Barack Obama nominated Flynn to be the 18th director of the Defense Intelligence Agency.[16][17] Flynn took command of the DIA in July 2012.[18] In October 2012 Flynn announced plans to release his paper "VISION2020: Accelerating Change Through Integration", a broad look at how the Defense Intelligence Agency must transform to meet the national security challenges for the 21st Century.[19]

I would find it very difficult to believe that Flynn doesn't know who the Supreme Leader of Iran is...

True, but he was quoted as saying this on TWO different news programs, on TWO different days.

In addition, here's a link to a HuffPo story I found with an embedded video excerpt from the Megyn Kelly interview in which Flynn himself clearly says "Khomeini", not "Khamenei".

You say Khamenei
I say Khomeini
We both mean the same man
but don't say it plainly
