John Hinckley Jr, the man who tried to assassinate US President Ronald Reagan, is to be released from a psychiatric hospital next month after 35 years.
Mr Reagan and three others were injured in the shooting outside a hotel in Washington in March 1981.
Mr Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity but was sent for treatment to a Washington hospital.
He has already been spending 17 days a month at his mother's home in Virginia under strict conditions.
A judge ruled that Mr Hinckley, now 61, could reside full-time there on "convalescent leave" from 5 August.

Yeah rube, I'm sure that you think the only thing Hinckley was guilty of is bad aim...
The original "not guilty by reason of insanity" decision was a complete travesty; the only good thing that can be said for that verdict is that it resulted in the tightening of insanity defense standards all across the country. I've always felt that politics played a role in that jury verdict. I very much doubt that District of Columbia jury would have reached the same verdict if the target had been Marion Barry.
This disgusting and unjust decision can still be reversed. The Justice department is reviewing whether or not to appeal it. I
strongly advise them to do so.

In July, a judge ruled that Mr Hinckley, now 61, was not a danger to himself or the public.
Mr Hinckley had already been spending 17 days a month at his mother's home in Virginia under strict conditions.
Associated Press reported that he had arrived at her home having been freed on Saturday.

Could he still be charged in the death of James Baker? If so, he should be.

I believe you're thinking of James Brady not James Baker...(who is still very much alive...)
Since his death was not related to his injuries, I expect not...(Though of course Jim Brady suffered every single day of his life thanks to Hinkley)
What angers me the most about this is that apparently the Justice Department didn't lift a finger to try to get this outrageous decision reversed.

From what I heard on the radio yesterday, Mr. Hinkley is far from 'free'. He is required to get a job. He is required to stay off the web. His phone will be monitored and his location, constantly by the Secret Service. And lots of other stuff, making it all close to house arrest. His release restrictions go on for many pages. Any violation at all and he is back in the nut house.

PLUS... he's left being stuck in the same house to live with "mother" until she passes.
As I see it he's merely been transferred to another psych facility.

Yeah...Brady, not Baker.
His death certificate lists the cause as "homicide".
