Global opinions of GOP

Post by rubato »

Since it has come up elsewhere I thought I would publish the facts about how the GOP is viewed internationally, especially by the G-20 states. And some of the reasons for their low opinions, all earned.

1.
The GOP across the board spouts bullshit anti-European opinions. Not just Trump, all of them.

The GOP’s ‘Europe’ is a land of make-believe
By Martin Klingst February 4, 2012

Martin Klingst is Washington bureau chief of the weekly German newspaper Die Zeit.

Lately it seems that not a day goes by without a Republican presidential candidate portraying Europe as a socialist nightmare. Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum paint a picture of the Old World as unfree, strangulated by bureaucratic and inefficient welfare systems, and unable to reform and modernize. To these Republicans, Europe seems to be the antipode to everything America is meant to be.

I understand that stump speeches are coarse and that, to Republican candidates, Europe must be bad because President Obama occasionally praises some of its achievements, such as universal health care or the “green” revolution.

... "
So in part they are slaves to their "if Obama says it's good then it's bad" knee-jerking.

To move on, the GOP are despised as a fringe party of extremists disconnected from reality; Trump is not an outlier he is just less successful at hiding his true feelings.

Why are the vast majority of Europeans disgusted and appalled by the Republican Party?

Though I consider your question to be poorly worded and leading, I will offer an answer.

The political spectrum of the US is much further to the conservative/right than in Europe. The mainstream ideologically "right/conservative parties" in Europe would align most closely with the Democratic Party in the USA. There is no mainstream political party in the USA that aligns with mainstream "left/liberal" parties in Europe.

We can use as an example the mainstream party that is considered most ideologically right wing in the UK, the Tories. Let's first consider:

The Tories, considered the furthest right of UK parties, is currently in power in a coalition governments with the Liberal Democrats (a party clearly much further to the left than the US Democrats)
Most of the Tories equivalents on the continent are actually fringe parties, and the Tories are likely the most right /conservative mainstream political party in Europe.
Major members of the Tories endorsed Obama, and publicly distanced themselves from the Bush Jr administration for ideological reasons. They have only marginal political links with the GOP, far removed from the close ties of Reagan/Thatcher (and Thatcher was not even remotely as socially conservative as Reagan, and Reagan was not even as remotely socially conservative as the modern, mainstream GOP platform.)

Thus, the mainstream party considered "most right" in the UK and Europe is most analogous politically to the US Democratic Party.

Some of the positions of this "far right" European party vs the GOP:

Tories have endorsed and supported universal health care since the 1940's. GOP have consistently fought all attempts at universal health care or even any expansion of any state supported health care system
Tories support a nation wide minimum wage. GOP opposes minimum wage.
Tories favor environmental policies intended to reduce global warming. Any GOP candidate who even tepidly suggests global warming is real is likely doomed politically (see presidential hopeful Jon Huntsman, his campaign famously imploded shortly after he said he generally believes in science and scientists)
Although anti - abortion elements exist in the Tories, they are marginalized. And even they are not calling for a ban, just more restrictions. Publicly endorsing an abortion friendly platform would be political suicide for GOP presidential candidates, all of them endorse an outright ban.
With nearly universal firearm bans in the UK, there is no real movement among Tories to roll back restrictions. Even mentioning some degree of gun control in the US is political suicide for a member of the GOP.
Tories endorse free trade and market capitalism, as do both major US parties.

These are just a few differences. The Tories are far less overtly religious, far more likely to support and endorse science, and make little mentioning of getting rid of welfare for the poor. Mainstream, popular GOP candidates like Bachmann, Perry, Palin, etc have absolutely no corollary in the mainstream UK - and definitely not on the continent. And
while someone like Michelle Bachmann is considered a GOP star, anyone in the UK voicing her political opinions would have absolutely no place in the Tories and would be considered a political pariah.

Therefore the mainstream GOP is perceived as equivalent to extremist, fringe far-right parties in Europe. And the US Democrats are perceived as equivalent to mainstream center right parties in Europe. And the political left of Europe is perceived as non existent in the US. And the mainstream opinion in Europe reflects that.

COLOMBIA
The thing about Republicans is they remind me of that bigot uncle we all have but can't manage to hate as much as we feel obliged to. Yes, their stances on issues like immigration and foreign policy is kind of a slap in the face to all of us south of the Rio Grande, but they are also a great reality check, especially for us millennials.

The Republican Party reminds us that not everyone is down with gay marriage, open borders, legalization of drugs, and a redistribution of wealth. And in a world where most conversations with your liberal "we are the 99%'' friends end in an agreement about how much the current world order sucks and how corporations, the military, and "The Man" are to blame for it all, the Republican's "let Uncle Sam and the free market handle it" agenda is a welcome challenge.

Republicans are also a great example of what being a world power really means: I mean, what's the point of getting up there if you're not going to remind the rest of the world that you've got them by the balls from time to time?
GERMANY

The Republican Party is a bit tricky.
For us, it stands for a lot of things that many Germans loathe about the US: moronic gun laws, homophobia, and a foreign policy that combines heavy weaponry, extreme paranoia, and a blissful ignorance of what people in other countries actually think.
A lot of the time, the Republican Party reminds us of Eric Cartman, and we would not like to live in a country run by Eric Cartman. Sometimes it's actually quite hard to understand why you'd even need a Republican Party when even your Democrats are fans of the downright scary NSA surveillance program, support fracking, and think assassinating people in foreign countries with drones is cool.

On the other hand, the Republicans also stand for a lot of things that are great about the US: corn dogs, getting drunk, and shooting guns in the woods (I know this directly contradicts what I said earlier about the gun laws, but it does sound really fun), big pickup trucks, and Britney Spears. At least, I hope that's what they stand for. Those things certainly sound more Republican than Democrat.

But yeah, mostly, the Republican Party seems completely nuts from where we stand. Like, whenever someone says something really wacky, misogynist or dangerous, it's either a Republican politician or Putin.
UNITED KINGDOM

The Republican Party is one of those organizations that never fails to reaffirm my identity as a European lefty. If I ever feel my faith in socialized healthcare, economic redistribution, or exotic brands of hummus weakening, I know that all I have to do is read about the latest Republican plan to give assault weapons to teachers or privatize American oxygen and I'll be OK again.

The party didn't always seem quite as insane as it does now. When I was growing up, we looked across the Atlantic and saw country club Republicans: old white guys who didn't like paying taxes, called their wives "Mother," and locked up minorities "for their own good." They were a bit like the Conservatives we had then. Now it seems as though those guys are moderates staring in open-mouthed disbelief at an army of shock jocks, Christian fundamentalists, and oil company stooges.

Perhaps in Britain we've always been comforted by the thought that our right-wing guys aren't quite as right wing as your right-wing guys. And as our right-wing guys have become more right wing, so too have your right-wing guys, and so the balance is preserved. The emergence of Donald Trump somehow seems like the inevitable next step in this process. The Republicans may as well have someone who doesn't believe government can or should do anything as their leader. Does the party even care about the presidency anymore? Or are they just happy to win Congress and fuck shit up from there?

I once went—for this magazine—to see Trump talk alongside motivational guru Tony Robbins. One of his key lines was: "I always hang around with people who aren't successful because it makes me feel better." The rest of the show was full of lazy platitudes and clichés about how to exploit people to make money. The whole thing lasted about an hour before he hopped back on a private jet with a fat check in his pocket. It seems like that's what the Republican Party has become: a nightmare collection of lazy, thieving bastards who just want to cash the check and clock out. Our Conservatives aren't too dissimilar, to be honest. It almost makes me miss George W. Bush. But then again, it's probably all his fault.
NETHERLANDS

The Republican Party is like that racist, sexist uncle you see three times a year at family gatherings—you expect him to turn polite conversation about that new apple pie recipe your mom tried out into a rant about how civilization as we know it is going to end "because IMMIGRANTS," but it never fails to shock you when it actually happens.

Except the Republican Party is not your sweaty uncle, but half of your governing body.

It's a delight to see the GOP struggling to appear sane while all the individual crazies try to out-crazy each other in its name. But, all glee aside, why, for the love of all that is holy are you people still letting all these old white guys decide on what women get to do with their uteruses? There is no excuse. Please get it together and either ignore them, or start policing their penises. Honestly, these people wouldn't recognise a uterus if it slapped them in the face and told them it was pregnant. They aren't equipped to make any decisions on the matter by themselves. ... "
I'll post the rest later but to save some time, if you scroll down Serbia actually said nice things about Republicans. These are the people who practiced a genocidal war, you will recall, and they are still bitter that Clinton bombed them and made them stop. And they were the only ones.

Even back in March the Republican candidate was reviled and Hillary the most trusted. [Note the mention of respect for Barack Obama.]

https://global.handelsblatt.com/edition ... ts-hillary

What if the rest of the world had a say in the U.S. presidential elections? Their votes may not count, but that hasn’t stopped others from asking.

It turns out that Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton can count on the support of 18 of the world’s 20 leading industrial nations if the world could vote in the 2016 U.S. presidential elections. Republican frontrunner Donald Trump gets top billing from just one country’s people: Russia.

Surprisingly, neither candidate can count on the support of their home country – at least not if the U.S. election were a free-for-all where people could vote for multiple candidates from each party. That honor goes instead to Bernie Sanders, the independent senator from Vermont and self-described “democratic socialist” who is challenging Ms. Clinton for the Democratic party’s presidential nomination.those are the findings of a new opinion poll released Tuesday, commissioned by Handelsblatt and conducted by YouGov, which asked 20,000 people across the world’s 20 leading economies, the bloc known as the G20, who their favorite is among the current crop of candidates running for U.S. president.

Asked which global personality is most trusted, the incumbent U.S. president (Barack Hussein Obama) tied with Pope Francis.

Ms. Clinton wins the overall poll by a landslide, with 35 percent of G20 voters picking the U.S. Democratic party’s leading candidate. A former first lady, Ms. Clinton also served as a New York senator and U.S. secretary of state for four years under President Barack Obama.

Her support is biggest in countries such as Mexico, Italy, Germany and Brazil. In Mexico, she even received more than 50 percent of votes.

Mr. Trump, the populist billionaire who has drawn condemnation from a number of international politicians for his outspoken stances on immigration and Muslims, finds himself in a distant second place globally with just 9 percent of the vote.

The only country that would settle for Mr. Trump is Russia, whose president Vladimir Putin has praised the Republican candidate as a “bright and talented person” and the clear front runner to win the Republican party’s presidential nomination. Mr. Trump has returned the favor, praising Mr. Putin for garnering the respect of his own people.
