War Hero Senator John McCain

Post by BoSoxGal »

He visited my high school, Marcos de Niza in Tempe, Arizona when I was a freshman. He told us his prisoner of war story. I was star struck and HUGELY inspired! He shook my hand. He is certainly to blame for a great portion of my youthful inclination toward public service, and feeling a deep-seated demand to make my life of great use to others.

He doesn't look well, at all. He is 80 years old and in a tight race for his seat (a 6th term) and having to suck it up and endorse Chump and being plagued to reject that position and having to stick with it to get every crazy train right wing racist vote in Arizona.

He really should retire.

There's no indication that he's failing mentally and he seems to have a pretty good energy level, so if he wants to hang in I'm all for it...(Lord knows there have been plenty of Senators who have been older)

Plus he's up by five and a half in the RCP average, and we need his seat... :ok

I do agree that it is painful to see him go through this humiliating charade with Drumpf, who I am sure he has absolutely no intention of voting for...

I imagine you're right about his vote Jim, but endorsing him is much worse and lends credibility to his campaign. I would never vote for anyone who endorsed Trump, even if he felt it was "for the good of the party" or even in his own interest.

And I suppose Sarah Palin was just a "senior moment," heh?

Three times in the late '80s and early '90s I spent vacation time at the Phoenician in Scottsdale. I saw McCain two times. Once in the lobby by himself and once having dinner with Charles Keating, the resort's owner.

With apologies to Harry Truman, McCain should just say to Trump, I'd rather be right than Senator.

Yes! :ok I really believe that he once had that kind of character; I don't think he does after 30 years in the Senate and becoming entitled to that kind of power and access to wealth. I don't think Senator John McCain is so admirable anymore, although I do still admire the strength of will he exhibited as a young POW. This is why I can't imagine him sucking it up to Trump after what Chump said about his service. The whole thing is despicable.

And I don't know how good his health is, LJ - saw a clip of him at a veteran's event in AZ this week and he looked ashen, was sweating profusely and used his hankerchief numerous times. Maybe just a summer cold or allergies in hot AZ, but seriously, why does he want to subject himself to a stressful campaign like this at age 80?

Seems time to retire. Perhaps the voters will let him know that, looks like it's a statistical tie in AZ now. AZ maybe going to vote for a Democrat! WOW!

Well, I'm going to judge that unless "Doctor Zebra" has ever actually examined John McCain, that I don't have much use for the "medical conclusions" of "Doctor Zebra"...

At least no more use than I have for the folks currently insisting that Hillary Clinton is about to keel over any minute...

ETA:

Just noticed this:
If elected President, 72-year-old John McCain would be just the third person to become Commander-in-Chief past retirement age
So this grave assessment of the Senator's health was assembled eight years ago...

Shouldn't he be dead by now?

McCain debased himself by repudiating everything he stood for in order to get Bush's support to run for president.

John McCain before:

Waterboarding is torture and torture is evil and Americans should not use torture. (And as a Vietnamese prisoner I know from torture)

John McCain After:

Waterboarding is cool, like paddle boarding and sail boarding. And Its not torture if we do it.

rubato--I cannot recall McCain ever defending or condoning waterboarding. Do you have a cite?

I think that's rubato's hyperbolic reference to McCain's endorsement of Chump, who proudly declares 'we will waterboard and WORSE' when he is Commander in Chief - which is a YUGE about face from McCain's declarations on the Senate floor after the release of the report detailing our use of torture following 9/11.

Poor John McCain; he's jumped the shark with this campaign, undermining all his prior laudable stands.

No he doesn't, because McCain never said any such thing...

A complete, outrageous, bare-assed lie...

That's so completely ridiculous, I suspect rube may be doing his elbow-bend exercises again...

BSG--But even with the ill-advised endorsement (and IMHO there's no excuse for it--Paraphrasing a Man for all Seasons, It benefitteth not a man if he gives up his soul for the entire world, but for a senate seat?"), but I recall him taking Trump on several times on the torture/waterboarding issue. There's a lot he waffled on (and he did run with Palin) so I have little respect for him, but I have not seen backing off on this issue.

I recall him taking Trump on several times on the torture/waterboarding issue.
And on other issues as well; publicly and repeatedly...

Facts which rube is either too ignorant to be aware of, or too dishonest to care about...

Is there anybody here who's declared support for a Presidential candidate who agrees with every position that candidate takes? Or anyone who feels they have to own every position that candidate takes whether they agree with it or not? (I sure as hell don't fall into either of those categories)

If so, that person would certainly have standing to attack John McCain...

Anybody else, not so much...

Well I'll reserve the right to case figurative stones as a YUUUUUUGE hypocrite like John McCain; you don't just 'disagree' with a man who calls you a loser for being a POW and who barks repeatedly about his plans to torture, murder family members of suspected terrorists, otherwise violate the Constitution and our international treaty obligations, not to mention the misogyny, racism, xenophobia, etc.

Sorry, but ALL of the Republicans maintaining their endorsements of Chump are morally bankrupt. They should ALL lose their elected positions.

As I said before, I once adored John McCain in a very patriotic way, he was a hero to me as a youth. I maintained that respect for him years after becoming my adult self and becoming far more liberal than McCain. I even maintained it despite the entire Sarah Palin debacle; I saw him as a victim of the careless political advisors around him who failed to vet her, and the party's pathetic courting of the idiot Tea Party hordes.

But now, after his unflinching endorsement of Chump in the face of his disrespect for Gold Star parents on top of EVERYTHING else - just to earn some racist redneck votes - well, I hope he is absolutely crushed by his opponent. And I know nothing about his opponent.
