NEW YORK (WPIX) — A plane carrying Republican vice presidential candidate Mike Pence and his campaign crew slid off the runway at LaGuardia Airport Thursday evening. No one was injured, AP reported.
The plane slid off the runway around 7:30 p.m., near 82nd Street and Grand Central Parkway in East Elmhurst, Queens.
The plane made a rough impact when it landed. The pilot slammed on the brakes and travelers could smell burning rubber.
There were 37 people on the plane, including the candidate.
Pence told reporters he’s fine and no one on board seems injured.
Stephanie Grisham, a spokeswoman for Donald Trump’s campaign, said the presidential hopeful called Pence after the incident, saying Trump is “is very glad everyone onboard the plane is safe.”
Passengers were evacuated through the back of the plane.
LaGuardia Airport has been closed until further notice.
Travelers are urged to check with their airline for additional information.
