I Should've Posted This In Laffs - Another Crackpot CA Idea

It still doesn’t have much of a ring – or chance of ever happening – but Calexit isn’t going away just yet.

As President-elect Donald Trump continued interviewing prospective appointees on Monday, the left-leaning leaders of a movement to make California a sovereign nation filed paperwork to take their case to voters in two years.

Inspired by this year’s “Brexit” vote that withdrew the United Kingdom from the European Union, the organization Yes California wants voters in November 2018 to repeal a section of the state constitution affirming that California is “an inseparable part” of the United States and determine whether they wanted to secede.

A “yes” vote would trigger a special election the following March in which residents would decide if “California should become a free, sovereign and independent country.”

Another “yes” vote would require the governor of the newly minted “Republic of California” to apply to the United Nations for membership.

Louis J. Marinelli, president of Yes California, told the Sacramento Bee that the group decided to go the U.N. route because they doubted that Congress would let the state secede.

“We’re not ashamed about going around Washington to achieve it,” Marinelli said. “Congress can’t tie its shoes. We can wait our whole life while Congress tries to grapple with this, and they won’t do anything.”

But the U.N. is also a longshot.

As much as China and Russia might cheer the dissolution of their major rival, the U.S. still wields veto power as a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council.

But that is an issue for another day for Calexit. Organizers said they’ll need 585,407 valid signatures to qualify their ballot measure. They plan to start shortly after Trump takes the oath of office.
Didn't we fight a rather protracted bloody war over this same shit some 150 years ago? :shrug

Ya think?

This is obviously some clown just trying to turn a quick buck by capitalizing on Trump's unpopularity in California...

I suspect a substantial percentage of the donations will wind up Mr. Marinelli's pocket...

Jim, some people are so easily manipulated and can’t see a joke when it slaps them in face. No one gets out of this union without a fight and the idea that California would go to war for independence is a joke. I am not saying there are not brave people in California, there are, but enough of the right age to put up a decent fight.

This brings up a theoretical question in my fevered imagination: If by some chance California did vote for independence which according to some is an act treason, would that justify Congress reclaiming
California statehood and dividing their territory among neighboring states? Would that benefit Republicans or Democrats in future elections?

Dale and I once offered to spring for a one-way ticket for him to Denmark...( he seemed absolutely enamoured of the place...)

I also offered to pay for his limo ride to the airport, and Dale offered to buy him a drink at the airport lounge while he was waiting to embark... 8-)

This thread reminded me of a tweet I saw earlier this year (before the election):

That looks like it was derived from a Billy Joel song.

"My Life"

Got a call from an old friend
We used to be real close
Said he couldn't go on the American way
Closed the shop, sold the house
Bought a ticket to the West Coast
Now he gives them a stand-up routine in L.A.

Just wish to point out that most intelligent people didn't think Trump had a snowball's chance in hell of winning the election, either.

That's a moot point, there are literally dozens of active faults throughout the state.

No worries, btd.
