Je regrette ne rien

Post by Gob »

I argued last week that anecdotal stories about disillusioned Trump supporters were overdone.

The fact is that, on a broad scale, Trump supporters say they aren't disappointed. In fact, a poll showed they were more pleased than disappointed, by about five to one.

The Pew Research Centre released a poll showing very little buyer's remorse among Trump voters. The poll showed just 7 per cent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents say Trump has performed worse than they expected him to. Fully 38 per cent - five times as many - say he has performed better.

A new Washington Post-ABC News poll confirms this - in spades. And, in fact, it shows more buyer's remorse for Trump's opponent in the 2016 election, Hillary Clinton.

And were the 2016 election held again today, it shows Trump would avenge his popular-vote loss.

While just 4 per cent of Trump's supporters say they would back someone else if there was a redo of the election, fully 15 per cent of Clinton supporters say they would ditch her.

Trump leads in a redo of the 2016 election by 43 to 40 per cent after losing the popular vote by 46 to 44 per cent.

It's "Je Ne Regrette, Rien"

Since the one accomplishment that Trump can claim since taking office — despite his overblown rhetoric on the campaign trail of all the things he would do 'starting on Day One!' — is the nomination and confirmation of Neil Gorsuch to the SCOTUS, this tells me that roughly 90% or so of Republicans did not really expect him to do a damned thing.  They were merely voting against the person with the 'D' after their name, and it wouldn't have made any difference if it was Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, Jerry Brown, or Jesus Christ Almighty.

The 38% who said that he has done **better** than expected leaves me scratching my head, though.  I don't know what they're smoking but it must be some dynamite shit.  As noted, the only promise he made that he's kept was to fill the SCOTUS vacancy.  Everything else — the Great Southwestern Wall, the mass removal of illegal aliens, a workable plan that will control who is allowed to enter the US without being unconstitutional, return of jobs to the US and re-employment of US workers, even declaring China to be a currency manipulator — pfffft.

But I'll bet he's taken five strokes off his golf game.....

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

Remember the GOP mantra--Government is not the solution, government is the problem.

For the GOP stalwart, that government is best that does nothing. So of course they are happy with our wonderful president, even if he spends more on government travel in his first year than Obama did in eight.

If government is shut down this Friday, it is a good thing. It is all those liberals wearing Birkenstocks and driving Volvos who complain about not getting into the National Parks anyway. Fuck'em. Those parks all ought to be privatized. Think how many good jobs could be created running the bigger and better roller coasters.

"I regret nothing."

And one of Adolf Eichmann's most endearing quotes.

To be accurate, it's 'Non, je ne regrette rien.'

Yet his approval ratings are in the dumps.
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.

Approval Ratings pays no rent for a politician. The real job of the American Congress, be they senator or representative, is raising money for the next election. That is where most of their attention and time is spent.

Yes, I love Edith Piaf. And after working with a Russian colleague for 7 years discovered he does as well.

A phenomenal song worth reading the translation, if you don't speak her the French too well. One of the most deeply romantic songs of all time.

It was sung by the French paratroops who mutinied in Algeria and were brought back for trial in Paris. More for the defiance of the opening lines than the whole meaning of the song.

No, nothing of nothing
No! I don't feel sorry about anything
Not the good things people have done to me
Not the bad things, it's all the same to me.

No, nothing of nothing
No! I don't feel sorry about anything
It's paid for, removed, forgotten,
I'm happy of the past

With my memories
I lit up the fire
My troubles, my pleasures
I don't need them anymore

Broomed away my love stories
And all their tremble
Broomed away for always
I start again from zero

Non ! Je ne regrette rien
Ni le mal, tout ça m'est bien égal !

Non ! Je ne regrette rien
Because my life, my joys
Today, they begin with you.

yrs,
