Nobody Knew Being President Could Be So Hard...

Trump now says being president harder than he thought

Candidate Trump insisted it would be easy but President Trump is finding the job trickier than he thought.

Donald Trump spent a great portion of 2016 insisting that being president would be easy – at least for him. HuffPost compiled a number of examples of him dismissing the problems that accompany the job as being easily dispatched. Building a wall on the border with Mexico is easy. Beating Hillary Clinton would be easy. Renegotiating the Iran deal would be easy. Paying down the national debt would be easy. Acting presidential? Easy.

To a reporter from Reuters this week, though, Trump had a slightly different assessment of the presidency.

“I love my previous life. I had so many things going. This is more work than in my previous life,” Trump said. “I thought it would be easier. I thought it was more of a . . . I’m a details-oriented person. I think you’d say that, but I do miss my old life. [Feel free to return to it any time Donald...we'll understand...]I like to work so that’s not a problem but this is actually more work.”

It wasn’t the first time that Trump copped to the job being trickier than he anticipated. In November, NBC News reported that Trump had told former House speaker Newt Gingrich that “This is really a bigger job than I thought.” (Gingrich’s response? “. . .good. He should think that.”) Then there are individual issues. “Nobody knew health care could be so complicated,” he said at one point. At another, he revealed that it took a conversation with the president of China to realize that the situation on the Korean peninsula was “not so easy.”

There’s an element of surprise in Trump’s comments, a hint of bafflement that having responsibility for the welfare of 320 million people entwined in a global economy and international relationships might end up being trickier than running a real estate and branding shop from midtown Manhattan. [Who knew? :shrug ]One group that probably wasn’t surprised that Trump wasn’t prepared? The majority of Americans.

At no point over the course of the 2016 campaign did a majority of Americans think that Trump was qualified for the job of the presidency. Polling from The Post and ABC News shows that views of Trump as unqualified dominated throughout the campaign. The only group that consistently viewed him as qualified to hold the position were the working-class white voters that constituted the core of his support from early in his candidacy.

More to the point, polling from CBS News showed that, consistently, Trump was viewed as unprepared for the job. In June, July and September – before, during and after Trump began making his general election case – the majority of Americans thought he wasn’t ready to hold the nation’s highest position.

Asked by CNN and its polling partner ORC, most Americans viewed Clinton as more prepared than Trump by a wide margin, including among Democrats and independents. A much greater number of Republicans were willing to call Clinton more qualified than Democrats were Trump.

Put simply: The majority of Americans didn’t think Trump was ready to be president of the United States. Based on his comments about the job being bigger or harder than he thought, that it is more work, it seems safe to say that Trump has also now come to believe that he wasn’t prepared for the office.

On at least one point, though, he continues to be convincing himself that he’s up to the task. In the middle of his interview with Reuters, Trump paused to pass out copies of a map he had on hand. The map showed the United States, colored with the results of the 2016 election. “It’s pretty good, right?” he asked the Reuters team.

Beating Clinton, as it turned out, was indeed easier than most people had expected.

I feel Lord Dampnut may be suffering from a heavy bout of "buyer's remorse." If it deepens it can lead to physical and mental exhaustion. This surely isn't the type of talk you'd expect from a national leader who plans to stick it out for four years, and possibly beyond.

So this, plus failure to achieve anything meaningful in his first 100 days, and record low ratings, may be the excuse Drumpf needs to admit defeat and announce his early exit. POTU2, come on down!

Hey, we all know there's something not quite right with the Trumpster and this might be the little ledge push that he needs in order to do the right thing.

Sadly, I suspect that is probably correct...

There was a time when I thought that as Trump discovered how much work would actually be involved, that between that and mounting frustration over how little he was actually able to accomplish and claim as "wins" that he might decide it just wasn't worth it and quit...

I posted to that effect on this board...

But I now believe I was wrong about that. I was wrong because I had underestimated how central his all consuming need to be the center of attention is, and how for him that overrules any other consideration...

If you have an overwhelming need to be the center of attention and have the media talking about you and focusing on you constantly, there is no better gig than President Of The United States....

Plus, as a person with a deep craving for "respect" that he has never been able to earn on his own merits, he relishes all the trappings of "respect" he receives just because of holding the office, (Everybody stands up when he enters a room, soldiers salute him, etc.)

I don't think he'd just give all that up, no matter how failed his Presidency becomes...

If (as I certainly hope) he leaves office early, it wont be because he realizes he's in over his head, or he realizes not he's up to the workload, or because he can't actually get most of the things he promised done...

He just loves the attention too much...

Being POTUS gives him the only thing that really matters to him...

The ultimate in "star power"...

He wont relinquish that easily...

Donald Trump has had, beyond a shadow of a doubt,
the least-effective first 100 days in office of any US president.
In fact, in only 31 days even this guy accomplished more.

Image
WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON, 9th PRESIDENT OF THE US
Gave longest-ever inaugural address (two-plus hours)
Blocked Whig efforts to have all Democrats dismissed from federal positions
Made history by becoming the first president to be photographed
Complained that 'social obligations' were preventing him from getting any additional business done

I don't know about anybody else, but I have to say that I don't yet feel like we've won so much that I'm sick of winning...

Jim--give him time for getting sick of it; when his core support dissolves and he is pretty routinely attacked in the press over and over again, his ego won't let him remain. My guess is he'll try one or two big pushes (our is it putsch? ), and when these fall through he'll get disgusted and make up an excuse to leave (he can't give up his business interests because he owes loyalty to his employees), it's taking too much a toll on his family who are attacked in the press, etc.). And then we'll have President Pence.
