As disturbing as some of the pictures are, those were the days when you were allowed to speak out against the government and not fear getting arrested without charge. The days when we really were the home of the free.

Not if you were Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Bobby Seale, Tom Hayden, et al., or marching/riding buses for civil rights in Alabama, Mississippi and environs.

Almost from its very beginning, this country has repeatedly failed to live up to its promises of free speech and petitioning the government for redress of grievances.

No doubt many were unfairly treated before, but I do think that the government crackdowns on free speech are far more widespread now. Ellsberg published the Pentagon Papers, and he still remained free; Snowden dared to show how Obama lied about wiretaps, and he had to flee to Russia; American citizens who go to Taliban groups get killed by drones, while Jane Fonda posed for pictures with Viet Cong groups. And so far as I know, during Viet Nam the USSC never endorsed arresting and imprisoning people with out charge, nor did it deny the detainees access to the civilian courts. We were a lot freer then.

She was dead cute.

Certainly cuter than Snowden.

And back then she was just about as knowledgeable about international politics and POTUS is now.
