“I Hate Everyone in the White House!”: Trump Seethes as Advisers Fear the President Is “Unraveling”

by Gabriel Sherman
October 11, 2017 2:40 pm

At first it sounded like hyperbole, the escalation of a Twitter war. But now it’s clear that Bob Corker’s remarkable New York Times interview—in which the Republican senator described the White House as “adult day care” and warned Trump could start World War III—was an inflection point in the Trump presidency. It brought into the open what several people close to the president have recently told me in private: that Trump is “unstable,” “losing a step,” and “unraveling.”

The conversation among some of the president’s longtime confidantes, along with the character of some of the leaks emerging from the White House has shifted. There’s a new level of concern. NBC News published a report that Trump shocked his national security team when he called for a nearly tenfold increase in the country’s nuclear arsenal during a briefing this summer. One Trump adviser confirmed to me it was after this meeting disbanded that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson called Trump a “moron.”

In recent days, I spoke with a half dozen prominent Republicans and Trump advisers, and they all describe a White House in crisis as advisers struggle to contain a president who seems to be increasingly unfocused and consumed by dark moods. Trump’s ire is being fueled by his stalled legislative agenda and, to a surprising degree, by his decision last month to back the losing candidate Luther Strange in the Alabama Republican primary. “Alabama was a huge blow to his psyche,” a person close to Trump said. “He saw the cult of personality was broken.”

According to two sources familiar with the conversation, Trump vented to his longtime security chief, Keith Schiller, “I hate everyone in the White House! There are a few exceptions, but I hate them!” (A White House official denies this.) Two senior Republican officials said Chief of Staff John Kelly is miserable in his job and is remaining out of a sense of duty to keep Trump from making some sort of disastrous decision. Today, speculation about Kelly’s future increased after Politico reported that Kelly’s deputy Kirstjen Nielsen is likely to be named Homeland Security Secretary—the theory among some Republicans is that Kelly wanted to give her a soft landing before his departure.

One former official even speculated that Kelly and Secretary of Defense James Mattis have discussed what they would do in the event Trump ordered a nuclear first strike. “Would they tackle him?” the person said. Even Trump’s most loyal backers are sowing public doubts. This morning, The Washington Post quoted longtime Trump friend Tom Barrack saying he has been “shocked” and “stunned” by Trump’s behavior.

While Kelly can’t control Trump’s tweets, he is doing his best to physically sequester the president—much to Trump’s frustration. One major G.O.P. donor told me access to Trump has been cut off, and his outside calls to the White House switchboard aren’t put through to the Oval Office. Earlier this week, I reported on Kelly’s plans to prevent Trump from mingling with guests at Mar-a-Lago later this month. And, according to two sources, Keith Schiller quit last month after Kelly told Schiller he needed permission to speak to the president and wanted written reports of their conversations.

The White House denies these accounts. “The President’s mood is good and his outlook on the agenda is very positive,” an official said.

West Wing aides have also worried about Trump’s public appearances, one Trump adviser told me. The adviser said aides were relieved when Trump canceled his appearance on the season premiere of 60 Minutes last month. “He’s lost a step. They don’t want him doing adversarial TV interviews,” the adviser explained. Instead, Trump has sat down for friendly conversations with Sean Hannity and Mike Huckabee, whose daughter is Trump’s press secretary. (The White House official says the 60 Minutes interview is being rescheduled.)

Even before Corker’s remarks, some West Wing advisers were worried that Trump’s behavior could cause the Cabinet to take extraordinary Constitutional measures to remove him from office. Several months ago, according to two sources with knowledge of the conversation, former chief strategist Steve Bannon told Trump that the risk to his presidency wasn’t impeachment, but the 25th Amendment—the provision by which a majority of the Cabinet can vote to remove the president. When Bannon mentioned the 25th Amendment, Trump said, “What’s that?” According to a source, Bannon has told people he thinks Trump has only a 30 percent chance of making it the full term.

I wonder if any Trump supporters who claim to be great lovers of the Constitution would care to criticize TMK's latest expression of his desire to shred the 1st Amendment :
Trump suggests challenging NBC's broadcast license

President Donald Trump on Wednesday suggested that NBC’s broadcast license should be pulled as punishment for the network's reporting on his national security meetings, opening a new front in the president’s long-running battle with the press.

NBC News published a report Wednesday morning stating that Trump had surprised his national security advisers by proposing a nearly tenfold increase in the U.S. nuclear arsenal during a July meeting. The meeting was what allegedly led Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to call Trump a “moron” — a comment that NBC first reported last week.

Trump lashed out at NBC, appearing to make a threat that is not even possible, given that the Federal Communications Commission doesn’t directly license networks.

“Fake @NBCNews made up a story that I wanted a ‘tenfold’ increase in our U.S. nuclear arsenal. Pure fiction, made up to demean. NBC = CNN!” Trump wrote on Twitter, equating the two TV news outlets he has most often lashed out against. “With all of the Fake News coming out of NBC and the Networks, at what point is it appropriate to challenge their License? Bad for country!”

NBC did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The FCC had no immediate comment.

"That was just fake news by NBC, which gives a lot of fake news lately," Trump said Wednesday during a brief interaction with the White House press pool ahead of a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. "It's frankly disgusting the way the press is able to write whatever they want to write. And people should look into it."

"The press should speak more honestly. I mean, I've seen tremendously dishonest press. It's not even a question of distortion," Trump added. "And then they have their sources that don't exist, in my opinion, they don't exist. They make up the sources.[Man, now that's what I call "projection"...the list of falsehoods Trump has claimed non-existent sources for is nearly endless...] There are no sources."

Last week, he called on the Senate Intelligence Committee (Right after the Chairman and ranking members of the committee stated that their investigation could not rule out collusion between Trump's campaign and the Russians) to start investigating the US news media:
Trump wants the Senate Intelligence Committee to investigate “Fake News Networks”

In President Donald Trump's latest display of creeping authoritarianism, he suggested over Twitter that Congress Senate Intelligence Committee should investigate U.S. news agencies for publishing stories damaging to his administration, stories he claims are entirely fabricated.

"Why Isn't the Senate Intel Committee looking into the Fake News Networks in OUR country to see why so much of our news is just made up-FAKE!" Trump tweeted early on Thursday morning.

Typically, the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence concerns itself with matters of foreign matters, providing budgeting and oversight for the CIA, NSA and Department of State as well as stepping over into some specific matters under review by the FBI, Treasury Department and Department of Energy. It also collaborates with the Senate Armed Services Committee on direction for the intelligence departments of the various armed services.

Arguably, the behavior of the domestic press is nowhere near its jurisdiction (nor, possibly, the jurisdiction of any other committee).

The president's clear misunderstanding of the duties of the committee and his attack on the media comes as he continues to railing against an NBC News story which reported that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson called the president a "moron," though there is no evidence to suggest the report is "fake."

Lord Dampnut's deluded aspirations of World War III will require conscripted cannon fodder. Drumpf has fully alienated Blacks and Hispanics so it's obvious that they will resist the draft. The ensuing antiwar momentum will grow and Whites and other minorities will soon follow. Our prison systems would not be large enough to contain the overflow of resisters.

How many "internment camps" would be necessary to contain the revolutionary subversives until total anarchy and chaos enveloped the country? Would mass executions of all the anti-government insurgents become the norm?

The mad king needs to be stopped. I can only hope that Kelly and Mueller will be able to stop the madness before it's too late.

The exit poll actually suggested that 7% of people who identified themselves as Republicans had voted for Mrs Clinton, while 9% of those who identified as Democrats had voted for Mr Trump.

From Bob Reich today:
This morning I phoned my old friend, a Republican former member of Congress.

Me: So what’s up? Is Corker alone, or are others also ready to call it quits with Trump?

He: All I know is they’re simmering over there.

Me: Flake and McCain have come pretty close.

He: Yeah. Others are thinking about doing what Bob did. Sounding the alarm. They think Trump’s nuts. Unfit. Dangerous.

Me: Well, they already knew that, didn’t they?

He: But now it’s personal. It started with the Sessions stuff. Jeff was as loyal as they come. Trump’s crapping on him was like kicking your puppy. And then, you know, him beating up on Mitch for the Obamacare fiasco. And going after Flake and the others.

Me: So they're pissed off?

He: Not just that. I mean, they have thick hides. The personal stuff got them to notice all the other things. The wild stuff, like those threats to North Korea. Tillerson would leave tomorrow if he wasn’t so worried Trump would go nuclear, literally.

Me: You think Trump is really thinking nuclear war?

He: Who knows what’s in his head? But I can tell you this. He’s not listening to anyone. Not a soul. He’s got the nuclear codes and, well, it scares the hell out of me. It’s starting to scare all of them. That’s really why Bob spoke up.

Me: So what could they do? I mean, even if the whole Republican leadership was willing to say publicly he’s unfit to serve, what then?

He: Bingo! The emperor has no clothes. It’s a signal to everyone they can bail. Have to bail to save their skins. I mean, Trump could be the end of the whole goddam Republican party.

Me: If he starts a nuclear war, that could be the end of everything.

He: Yeah, right. So when they start bailing on him, the stage is set.

Me: For what?

He: Impeachment. 25th amendment.

Me: You think Republicans would go that far?

He: Not yet. Here’s the thing. They really want to get this tax bill through. That’s all they have going for them. They don’t want to face voters in ’18 or ’20 without something to show for it. They’re just praying Trump doesn’t do something really, really stupid before the tax bill.

Me: Like a nuclear war?

He: Look, all I can tell you is many of the people I talk with are getting freaked out. It’s not as if there’s any careful strategizing going on. Not like, well, do we balance the tax bill against nuclear war? No, no. They’re worried as hell. They’re also worried about Trump crazies, all the ignoramuses he’s stirred up. I mean, Roy Moore? How many more of them do you need to destroy the party?

Me: So what’s gonna happen?

He: You got me. I’m just glad I’m not there anymore. Trump’s not just a moron. He’s a despicable human being. And he’s getting crazier. Paranoid. Unhinged. Everyone knows it. I mean, we’re in shit up to our eyeballs with this guy.

So the freaking tax bill, that is mostly going to help the wealthy (and themselves, of course), is more important than stopping the madman in the White House? :arg :arg :arg

GOP senator to Trump: Are you 'recanting of the' Oath of Office?

Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) is questioning whether President Trump's claim that it's "disgusting" that the press can "write whatever it wants" suggests that he is reneging on his Oath of Office.

"Mr. President: Words spoke by the President of the United States matter. Are you tonight recanting of the oath you took on January 20 to preserve, protect, and defend the First Amendment?" Sasse said in a statement.

The presidential Oath of Office vows to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States," including the First Amendment's press freedom guarantee.

Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday that it is "disgusting the press is able to write whatever it wants to write." He later said he had no plans to curb press freedom, but the comments drew swift criticism from both the left and the right.

The remarks also followed an earlier suggestion that the federal government challenge NBC News' broadcast license, after the network published a report that Trump had once expressed a desire to increase the United States' nuclear arsenal "tenfold." The president denied that he ever voiced interest in doing so.

He doubled down on that remark Wednesday night, tweeting that news networks that report what he deems "fake news" should have their licenses "challenged and, if appropriate, revoked."

Trump has long had a contentious relationship with the press, and has frequently railed against news outlets that cover his administration critically as "unfair" or "partisan."

Last nite Steven Cobert quoted the "I hate everyone in the White House" tweet and remarked "I know exactly how your feel."

The he put the tweet about stopping the press from saying whatever they want and said 'the people' had looked into this very issue and decided 'Yes, they can."

Cobert said in his opening last night that somebody on the staff told POTUS that impeachment was no threat to him, but the 25th amendment was; the cabinet could remove him. Trump then said "What is the 25th amendment?" The man's ignorance about his powers and responsibilities as POTUS is appalling. He threatened to remove the NFL's big tax exemptions (long time complaint from Trump's much cited base is that Obama used the IRS to shut down conservative critics!). There are no special exemptions for the NFL league as a whole or the individual teams--such exemptions similar to those in effect for major league baseball ended long ago. He threatened to pull the license of NBC network--ignoring that the networ4s are not licensed broadcasters. He threatened the press because they are saying whatever they want.

However, the actual political climate at the local level tells me 'the majority' of Americans, as determined by the real polls that happen at real ballot boxes and is determined by the gerrymandered voting districts, STILL CHEERS this POTUS who is far more offensive and dangerous than Nixon was.

WaPo ran an opinion essay yesterday about this staff at the White House, claiming that the entire group is a bunch of second raters, compared to the experience and background of the individuals usually taking those positions. As each one is removed or leaves ,Trump replaces them with a third rater whose major qualification is willingness to kiss Donald's ass (it was express more elegantly in the WaPo.) The baffling public revealment of the early cabinet meeting where Trump proudly responded to each cabinet member as then went round the table and each person tried to exceed the previous person's effusive subservience to the wisdom and nobility of their leader. was referenced.

Stand erect. Grasp back of thighs firmly. Bend over and kiss your ass goodbye.

The Republican Party has no more integrity, putting tax cuts for the wealthy ahead of the safety of our nation currently in the hands of a madman.

They are seriously miscalculating their voter base; maybe some of them can get elected solely by votes of redneck Trumpanzees, but many cannot - and there are Republicans abandoning the party in significant numbers over Trump, more every day, plus Democrats and Independents changing party enrollment in order to undermine Republicans in the next primaries.

The GOP needs to man up and get him the fuck OUT!
