Joe Arpaio, the Controversial Sheriff President Trump Pardoned, Is Running for Senate

(PHOENIX) — Former Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio has announced he plans to run for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Jeff Flake.

The 85-year-old Arpaio is a close ally of President Donald Trump and tweeted Tuesday he seeking the post “to support the agenda and policies of President Donald Trump in his mission to Make America Great Again.”

Arpaio was spared a possible jail sentence last year when Trump pardoned his conviction for disobeying a judge’s order in an immigration case.

He flirted with the idea running for Arizona governor five times but decided against doing so each time.

Arpaio says in a fundraising email that he filed paperwork Tuesday for the Senate run.

Flake has been critical of Trump and announced last year that he would not seek another term.

I am running for the U.S. Senate from the Great State of Arizona, for one unwavering reason: to support the agenda and policies of President Donald Trump in his mission to Make America Great Again.
I said at the time he was pardoned, that if a President wanted to create a dictatorship, that is how it could be done constitutionally. Imagine the U.S. Marshall Service staffed with Joe Arpaios, and the president says, "Go to the Capitol, arrest every member of Congress and jail them without charge. When a court orders you to release them, ignore it, and when you are cited for contempt I will pardon you."

If the president's pardoning power can be used to pardon those who flout court orders, then Congress can be neutralized, the judiciary has no way to enforce its rulings and the executive has no checks on its powers.

Maybe the rigors of the campaign trail will take their toll--we can only hope. that and we can hope the electorate is smart enough to not vote for this ass.

What is he going to run as? The reason Flake was dropping out is it looked like he wouldn’t survive the primary but if that primary was divided and depending on the local election laws (most votes vs. 50%+1) he could
walk away with a win in a 3 way primary.

Were I running against him, I would hammer home three significant points...
1) senility — I would belabor the connection between advanced age and Alzheimer's every chance I got
2) life expectancy — how much longer is this old fossil likely to remain alive and functional versus connected to life support, ostomy bags, and catheters?
3) his criminal record — he may have gotten a Presidential pardon, but that doesn't change the fact that he still stands convicted of contempt of court.

It may be considered dirty pool, it might not be politically correct, it is most certainly ageist, and it might even be borderline unethical to target the candidate rather than the issues, but I'm afraid that politics today is no longer a genteel endeavor engaged in by honorable people.

The first wo may not work in the retirement haven of Arizona--in his 80s, he may be like a young lad there.
