Once Again, Joe Scarborough Nails It...

Post by Lord Jim »

I came to the exact same conclusion as soon as this story broke yesterday:
Morning Joe: Trump Accepted Meeting With North Korea to Distract from Stormy Daniels Story

"Morning Joe" hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski said President Donald Trump's decision to accept an unprecedented face-to-face meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was an effort to distract from the story about his alleged prior relationship with adult film star Stormy Daniels.

After being invited to meet by the young dictator via South Korean national security adviser Chung Eui-yong, Trump accepted on Thursday night. According to Chung, Kim has offered to put the nuclear and missile programs on the table.

The announced summit was praised as "historic" by South Korean President Moon Jae-in, although the question now is whether North Korea will act deceptively as it has in the past and simply use the meeting to gain much-desired international legitimacy.

On the set of MSNBC's morning show, the hosting duo believed the announcement was to get the news about Daniels—also known as Stephanie Clifford—and her lawsuit over a non-disclosure agreement concerning a reported prior sexual relationship with Trump, off the front page.

"Is this a deflection … from Stormy?" Brzezinski asked.

"Of course it's a deflection," Scarborough said.

Scarborough compared it to Trump's hasty announcement of tariffs last week during a tumultuous period of news for the administration. Co-host Willie Geist said it's unclear whether the planned meeting would actually come to pass or if it was part of a larger negotiation over the rogue regime's nuclear weapons.

"Or again, a distraction to change the headlines from Stormy Daniels, which was yesterday, to North Korea today," Scarborough said.

"That's exactly what it is," Brzezinski said.

Scarborough said he feared a "very bad deal" coming, likening it to the Iran nuclear deal desperately desired by the Obama administration.

"He makes a decision on North Korea because of Stormy Daniels, and people can deny that all they want, but if you're doing that, you're in the tank for Donald Trump, because it is painfully obvious that's exactly what's going on," Scarborough said.

"This is his pattern," Brzezinski said.

Scarborough held up a copy of the Washington Post, saying Trump didn't want the words "Stormy Daniels" on the front page, and he had succeeded.

I rate the chances of this actually happening at no better than 50-50, probably less...(Which in my view is a Good Thing)

It will probably get cancelled the day a new batch of indictments and/or plea deals come down from the Special Counsel's office...

Like the Incredible Shrinking Tarriffs, and the bru-ha-ha he stirred up over his announcement banning transgender people from serving in the military (which has also fallen apart) this decision has absolutely nothing to do with any kind of policy strategy, and everything to do with trying to change the focus of the news cycle...

But he's a negotiating genius--just ask him. He excels in negotiation the way some do in painting and sculpture. Whether or not the meeting takes place is immaterial--nothing will come of it. Absent significant work ahead of time setting and agenda and doing the real work of negotiation, all that will be accomplished, at best, if the two to sit together for a photo op--which is pretty much all Trump can do (and so far as I can see, all he has ever done--negotiating genius my ass). He may insult Kim, but then I would think that Kim (who has to be pragmatic considering his position in N Korea has to expect that--otherwise "little rocket man" wouldn't meet at all); but nothing will come of it except some sort of distraction.

Once again, his impetuousness results in nothing but a huge propaganda coup for Kim Jong Un, who will come out of this looking good to his people no matter what the outcome.

He's such a negotiating genius that he's already losing: he just gave Kim Jong Un both domestic and international legitimacy as a head of state who can demand the time and personal attention of the President of the United States to advance the interests of North Korea, and Trump got absolutely nothing in return (except something for people to talk about besides Stormy Daniels). He just blew a yooge leverage opportunity to get concessions as a condition to a personal meeting. The Shart of the Deal, indeed.

Because Friday afternoon and the week's news cycle is over; by the time people are paying attention again on Monday, it will all be old fake news.

It hasn't been outright cancelled, but it's being walked back:
White House puts an asterisk on Trump, Kim Jong Un meeting

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump will not meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un unless North Korea takes "concrete and verifiable actions" toward denuclearization, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Friday.

"They have made some major promises. They have made promises to denuclearize. They have made promises to stop nuclear and missile testing," Sanders said. "We're not going to have this meeting take place until we see concrete actions that match the words and the rhetoric of North Korea."

Sanders' comments Friday cast doubt on the President's much-ballyhooed agreement to meet the North Korean leader, with the White House appearing to impose new conditions that were not apparent a day earlier. The South Korean national security adviser said Kim is "committed to denuclearization," but there was no indication that North Korea had promised to take steps toward denuclearization in order to secure a meeting with the US President.

Instead, Kim only promised to stop nuclear and ballistic missile testing and said he accepted the right of the US and South Korea to move forward with joint military exercises later this year.

Sanders' words on Friday also marked the White House's first comments preconditioning the meeting. In a statement the previous evening, Sanders said Trump "will accept the invitation to meet with Kim Jong Un at a place and time to be determined" and that the US looks "forward to the denuclearization of North Korea."

But Sanders on Friday repeatedly claimed that North Korea had "promised" to denuclearize and said Pyongyang would need to take "concrete and verifiable actions" toward that aim for Trump and Kim to meet.

"The President will not have the meeting without having concrete steps or seeing concrete actions taken by North Korea," she said.

It's logical to assume that Trump will try to milk this for all the diversionary value he can get, so we can expect this supposed meeting to be on-again, off-again, on-again, off-again a number of times as Trump uses it to try to distract from whatever scandal news is breaking about him on any given day...

From Facebook:
  • Historically, the Kims of North Korea have been desperate to meet with world leaders so that they could elevate THEMSELVES and North Korea.

We are now in a situation where an American president wants to meet with a Kim to elevate HIMSELF.

    That's how far we've fallen.

Let that sink in for a while.
