Gee Laura, To What "Demographic Changes" Are You Referring?

Post by Lord Jim »

Is the country becoming too young? Too female? Too Swedish?
Fox News host Laura Ingraham slammed over immigration comments

Controversial Fox News host Laura Ingraham is once again the target of criticism, this time over comments she made about the country’s changing demographic landscape, which she blamed on illegal — and legal — immigration.

“Massive demographic changes have been foisted upon the American people, and they are changes that none of us ever voted for, and most of us don’t like,” Ingraham said on The Ingraham Angle on Wednesday night, noting that “it does seem like the America that we know and love doesn’t exist anymore.”

“From Virginia to California, we see stark examples of how radically, in some ways, the country has changed,” Ingraham continued. “Now, much of this is related to both illegal, and in some cases legal, immigration that, of course, progressives love.”

Despite studies showing the crime rate among native-born residents is higher than that of immigrants, Ingraham used her monologue to link undocumented immigrants with a series of individuals who committed violent acts. She highlighted the case of Juan Ramon Vasquez, an undocumented immigrant from Honduras who sexually assaulted a 5-year-old girl after his 2014 release from a Philadelphia jail. Federal prosecutors secured a guilty plea from Vasquez on immigration offenses Tuesday.

Ingraham’s comments were widely condemned across the political divide. Rep. Ted Lieu (D., Calif.) called her comments “racist” and said Ingraham is “no more American than I or others are.” Matt Pearce, a national correspondent for the Los Angeles Times, wrote on Twitter that Ingraham’s comments were the “swan song of white nationalism.” CNN senior editor Alex Koppelman wrote: “Fox’s prime time lineup used to put a thin veil over the racism, but they’ve stopped pretending lately.”

ESPN’s Jemele Hill, who previously criticized Ingraham after the Fox News host told NBA superstar LeBron James to “shut up and dribble,” wrote that her comments were “just disgusting” and “flat-out racist.”

Even some conservatives weren’t supportive of Ingraham’s comments. Chris Vance, who was the former chair of the Washington State Republican Party but left the party in 2017, said Ingraham’s rhetoric was “full on unadulterated racism.” S.E. Cupp, a conservative political commentator whose nightly HLN show will move to CNN starting Aug. 25, said Ingraham was deliberately stoking the fears of Trump supporters “who believe their problems are the fault of people who don’t look like them.“

Even Anthony Scaramucci, President Trump’s former White House communications director, blasted Ingraham’s comments as “ignorant” and “un-American.”

“It’s the same level of xenophobia that my immigrant grandparents faced as Italian-Americans 70, 80 short years ago,” Scaramucci said on CNN Thursday afternoon. “I hope she realizes that what she said is just not—it’s against the American values that she’s supposedly touting.”

Here's what one of my favorite cable news folks, Republican discussion show host and commentator SE Cupp wrote in response:
What Laura Ingraham said was awful. And unsurprising.

By SE Cupp

(CNN)At the end of her monologue Wednesday night, Fox News host Laura Ingraham issued a dire warning to the country: "This is a national emergency, and we must demand that Congress act now."

The national emergency wasn't weather-related. It wasn't a shortage of medicine or food. It wasn't a cyberattack or terrorist threat.

It was, instead, "massive demographic changes." What once might have been a dog whistle is officially a scream, voiced over the airwaves of the President's favorite cable news network. It's a sad commentary on Trump's America.

"In some parts of the country, it does seem like the America that we know and love doesn't exist anymore," she complained.

"Massive demographic changes have been foisted upon the American people, and they are changes that none of us ever voted for, and most of us don't like. From Virginia to California, we see stark examples of how radically, in some ways, the country has changed."

In case it was unclear, she explicitly said it: "Now, much of this is related to both illegal, and in some cases legal immigration that, of course, progressives love."

To many, that sounded racist. That's because it is. She isn't complaining that the country's getting older or younger, richer or poorer, that we're having more or fewer children or moving to the suburbs. She's complaining that people who come to America from other countries -- even legally -- are making this country unrecognizable to her. Indeed, to "us."

Who "us" means is also clear: Fox News viewers, who are predominantly 65 and older and white. I know many of those viewers, and I'm sad to say that message probably resonated with a lot of them.

The outrage on blue-check Twitter over Ingraham's comments was widespread. I weighed in myself, telling Ingraham to speak for herself. But blue-check Twitter is not representative of the America she is speaking to. If you're surprised by what she said, or that Trump's America seems just fine with this, you haven't been paying attention.

This is why he won. Because there are untold numbers of people across the country -- from Virginia to California, as Ingraham put it -- who believe their problems are the fault of people who don't look like them. Whether they're right or wrong is beside the point. It's a fear and loathing that many in politics -- from both parties at one time or another -- have happily fomented and stoked to win votes. It's deep and it's real.

Now, the President of the United States is just the latest prophet of this religion, and unsurprisingly, he has plenty of devout followers.

A number of those "devout followers" will be in DC today...

I wonder if Trump will have a shout out for these "fine people":
Washington, D.C., prepares for potential showdown at white-supremacist rally

Hundreds of white nationalists will gather in Lafayette Square on Sunday to mark the one-year anniversary of last August's controversial Charlottesville rally.

Jason Kessler, a prominent white nationalist, is organizing the rally, which begins with a march at 5 p.m. and continues with speakers in Lafayette Square from 5:30 to 7:30.

“White people should be able to have the same rights as other groups," he said, referencing what he sees as civil rights abuses by the Charlottesville government against white nationalist demonstrators, and against white people more generally.

Kessler had originally hoped to rally in Charlottesville again, and when his permit request was denied by the city government, he challenged the decision in court. On July 24, he withdrew the request.

But Washington, D.C. is an ideal location, he said, because it allows demonstrators to symbolically confront people in power.

"It’s (Lafayette Square is) right there in front of the White House," Kessler said. "So we can rally in D.C. and talk to President Trump."

Watched a little of the so-called "Unite The Right" rally on CSPAN...(I really find that name for the rally offensive; I'm part of "the right" and I sure as hell ain't united with this racist scum...)

They got a permit for 400, but I doubt they had more than a couple of dozen...

It was tough to tell for sure, because as the camera panned around, it was clear that there were far more press people covering it than there were actual participants...(It was supposed to go on for a couple of more hours, but they wrapped up early because of rain...kinda wimpy for Storm Troopers...)

Beyond a police line, (the cops also way outnumbered the "white nationalists"...hell. there were more police horses present then there were of the racist clowns...) there were maybe a 1000 counter demonstrators...

They seem to be hanging around for now...
