Today, at the Royal Farms in DE it was $2.539. However, with my "ROFO" store card I get a $.10 a gallon discount. So for now, on a national average, I'm happy to pay $2.439.

Vote anything but Trump.

I paid $2.829/gallon for unleaded in western Wisconsin when I filled up the Camry today.  But even though that's still under $3.00 — wes's 'magic line' — I STILL ain't voting for Trump or anyone else with an 'R' after their name on the ballot in November.  There's more on the line in this election than just cheap gas.

Prices are SUPPOSED to drop about now. During the summer months more expensive additives are added to the mix to reduce the vapor pressure and cut back the release of those nasty pollutants into the atmosphere. Lower ambient temperature naturally reduces the evaporation and the mix is cheaper.
I note my new (2018 Toyota) car has a label next to the gas cap not to use fuel with more than 15% ethanol. I have never seen anything above E10 around here. I have seen ordinary pumps in Illinois and Oklahoma with E85 which is popular with big-buck street racers.

The pump price here in Northern Delaware has dropped more than 20 cents in the past week. The rise and fall of the pump price is a mystery, particularly to the low level businessman actually running the local gas station. He (or she) is almost always completely controlled on the pump price.

I'll play. Prices have been steadily rising in this part of PA. It's consistently 2.99 to 3.10 depending on where you go (I saw 3.49 in a very rural area with no other stations around to drive down the price).

Either way, I've committed to not pulling a single "R" lever as long as DJT is in power. I'll hold my nose and pull a straight "D" ticket if I have to. After he won in 2016, I tweeted to him that he has four years to win my vote. Not only has he not earned my vote, he's turned me against anyone remotely connected to him. Been registered "R" all of my voting life. What he's managed to do to my party and my country is offensive. The only good thing is that he's managed to get his racist, misogynistic followers that make up his base to come out into the open and expose themselves for what they are.

Yeah, right. Twice a year I hear the same thing: "Prepare for higher gas prices as the refineries switch to the more expensive Summer Blend". 6 months later: "Prepare for higher prices as the refineries switch to the more expensive winter blend".

I'll vote Democratic as much as I can, but he only way I can avoid voting for a Republican in some local races is to write someone in or simply not vote in those races. It's a little pocket of Elephants here, but that is quickly changing. Or it would if the quickly growing Hispanic population would bother to vote (yes, they are citizens. They own their own houses and own their own businesses). Oddly, I moved from a straight-blue district (no Republicans bothered to run in the primaries for State House or Senate) to a very red one (no Democrats bothered to run). Yet the demographics were similar- a lot of old-timer White republicans, younger white meth addicts, and a growing Hispanic and Asian population. For the same reason too - cheap housing.

Running around $2.78 for regular in these parts, but I’m having to cough up the extra for mid grade now that Reva is old and finicky, so I’m paying $3.08

Which brings up a question; is it at all effective to mix half a tank of regular with half a tank of mid grade? I suppose the $3 isn’t gonna kill me, but just wondering. I already use Lucas additive with most fill ups, unless I’m in a hurry.

Firstly, I don't feel you need to use additives in your gas -- gas if pre-formulated before it leaves the refinery. Secondly, I also feel you can use regular gas without any problems. What I would avoid for an older car is ethanol. It is known to play havoc on gaskets and seals.

I don’t think I have an option about that, I have to use the gas that’s at the gas station. I think the only places that sell nonethanol gas in Massachusetts are airports and marinas and such.

Doesn’t the additive help take the edge off the ethanol? There is very definitely a difference of performance - she runs quieter and seems to have more oomph - on the plus gas.

I suppose it all has to do with how much you trust your instincts. If you think it works -- then it probably does. However, I had a '88 Honda Accord with over 430,000 miles on it and I only put a few bottles of fuel injector cleaner in the tank in all that time. Never a "stabilizer," and nothing other than regular gas.

All things being equal, a car with a more worn engine vs one not so worn should run better on LOWER octane fuel. Higher octane is generally needed for higher compression, and as an engine wears, compression goes down.

But that's if everything was equal. Carbon buildup or other deposits cause hot spots that make lower octane fuel ignite earlier. Older engines build up deposits faster, particularly if oil consumption has increased.

I have to run midgrade in one of my trucks, but that's due to a combination of advanced timing and a milled, higher than stock compression head. Otherwise it pings, but running full premium causes a drastic drop in fuel economy. But not all stations carry midgrade- Costco does not. So, sometimes I just alternate premium one fill up, regular the next. That's how stations make their midgrade anyway. The trucks only carry the 2 end grades, they're mixed to make mid.

So mixing grades is entirely safe? I’d like to start doing half regular half mid grade and see how it runs on 86 versus 87.
