Florida man calls police on comic Ahmed Ahmed after Middle East joke makes him 'uncomfortable'

A Florida man called police to report a comedian of Middle Eastern descent who he believed had told a joke that showed support for terrorism.

Standup comic Ahmed Ahmed, who is of Egyptian descent, poked fun at negative stereotypes of Muslims during a set at Off The Hook Comedy Club in Naples, Florida, on Saturday night.

"Clap if you're from the Middle East," Ahmed said, according to a clip posted on the club's Facebook page.

After a smattering of cheers, Ahmed slyly responded: "All right. We got a handful of us in in here, nice. But, hey, it only takes one of us ... to tell a joke."

At least one member of the audience didn't get the punchline.

The man called the Collier County Sheriff's Department and told a deputy that Ahmed was organizing people of Middle Eastern descent to possibly commit terrorism.

"He said, `That's great.' He said, `We can organize our own little terrorist organization,' and I don't think that was right. I mean it really bothered me," the caller said, according to audio of the call released by the sheriff's department. "And I yelled out, `And the paddy wagon is going to be outside to get all of you.' "

The man added: "My wife and I looked at each other and we felt very uncomfortable."

The caller told authorities he was only at the club because he was given free tickets.

Ahmed told NBC News on Wednesday that the "it only takes one of us" line is in his regular act and it's never sparked any blowback.

“I've told that joke about 1,000 times around the world," Ahmed said. "Whatever he heard and what I said are two different things."

The comic said he stuck around after Saturday's show to meet with any fans who wanted to speak with him or snap pictures.

"Terrorists don’t do meet-and-greets," the comic said. "We don't say, `Death to America!' and then, `But wait, let's do selfies first.' "

Deputies showed up to the club Sunday before Ahmed's set that night, briefly interviewed him and left without incident.

“They couldn’t have been nicer," Ahmed said of the responding deputies. "One of them said, `Don't change anything, keep doing what you're doing.' That was refreshing to hear."

Club owner Brien Spina said he's been booking Ahmed to his club for more than a decade, and won't stop now.

"For me it was a great joke. I stand behind him," said Spina, who booked Ahmed for another gig, on Wednesday of next week. "His show is great."

The comic said he has no ill will toward the caller. If anything, he wants to shake his hand.

"I want to say, `Thank you,' to him," Ahmed said. "He got more publicity for me in that one phone call than ever. You want to talk about a blessing in disguise."
So where is the charge for making a false report? Or does that only apply if the perpetrator is brown skinned and gay?

This is making American Great again?

The man added: "My wife and I looked at each other and we felt very uncomfortable."

How did we get to be such a nanny state that it is considered a supportable conservative belief that it is a crime to be made to feel uncomfortable?

Yeah, the same idiots who mock teenage survivors of school shootings feel the need to run to the police over a joke they didn't bother to hear properly.

Paddy wagon... who uses this term anymore? I can see an elderly old man in a MAGA hat. And in Florida of all places.

Who knew?

Yeah, rolling in the aisles on that one. Best boffo joke of the century I wouldn't doubt. I'll try to remember it to tell the guys next time we have a few beers. Heavens, it's deeply amusing and belly-achingly laugh-making. Tip-top humor. "It only takes on of us...to tell a joke". George Carlin would stand in awe of such inspiration!

"Florida man" . . . what an idiot! :arg

So it didn't bring thunderous applause or guffaws of laughter.  Sometimes your material isn't as funny as you thought it was.  I remember lots of times when Carson, or Hope, or George Burns, or even Carlin cracked a line and stood there while crickets chirped too.

I agree that this guy wasn't particularly funny...

But being a bad comedian isn't a crime in this country....(though there have been times I wished it was...)

The fact that the guy who called the cops heard these remarks from somebody standing on a stage in a place called Off The Hook Comedy Club should have been a dead giveaway that what was said was intended to be a joke, funny or not...

It's not like he overheard something like this spoken in hushed tones in a restaurant, where maybe he could be forgiven for reporting it out of an abundance of "if you see something, say something" caution...

It looks to me like given the fact that he was in a comedy club, (and knew he was in a comedy club) Florida Man was well aware of the fact that this was no potential serious terrorist threat. He was just being an asshole who decided he would try to use the cops to create a hassle for somebody who was saying something he found offensive...

Here's a clue:

If you don't want to hear bad jokes, and you don't want to be offended, don't go to local comedy clubs...

You are likely to hear things there that you wouldn't hear on The Tonight Show...

I just watched a bunch of his videos on YouTube; the audiences were laughing pretty hysterically at his jokes and delivery of them, including jokes poking fun at the racist stereotyping experienced by Arab Americans and Muslims post-9/11. Comedy isn’t just the lame ass jokes that most of you old white dudes exhibit on these pages; it’s social commentary that allows audiences to laugh st things that are in fact deeply disturbing, like how old white dudes persecute brown people and suspect them of being terrorists simply for being brown and/or Muslim. Comedy is a means to converse about difficult subjects for people who aren’t obsessive enough to spend their days debating as participants to online forums, etc.

The fucking irony of some of the comments to the OP is as rich as the irony of the racist old white Florida man who called the cops on comedy.

I think you missed this in the OP, BB
"For me it was a great joke. I stand behind him," said Spina, who booked Ahmed for another gig, on Wednesday of next week
I saw no joke. And no social commentary either. Maybe the rest of his show is terrific but that... that wasn't a joke.

As far as I know, BSG, my irony isn't having nearly as much fun as yours.

I repeat what I wrote about the complainer: "Florida man" . . . what an idiot! :arg
