So far the pics I have seen of 'tanks' in WDC look to me like Bradley Fighting Vehicles. One of our military guys can enlighten me - are these tanks?

I heard the voice of POTUS on the radio yesterday morning announcing that we would have tanks--brand new Sherman tanks and Abrams tanks. But they would be very careful where they put them because they would damage the DC streets.

Once again the CinC demonstrates his complete ignorance of the military. I think the last Sherman tank was probably built before he was born.

later edit. Love the picture above. How much does Allied Party Rental charge for one of these?

The whole effort by Il Boobce to co-opt the National Mall festivities and attempt to somehow pervert the celebration of our national founding holiday into a celebration of him is truly vomit inducing...

Though given the bottomless pit nature of his vileness, I guess the real question is why he hadn't tried it earlier...

Also, I'm sure the irony of this would-be tyrant trying to co-opt a holiday that celebrates the casting-off of a tyrant is completely lost on King Donald and his followers...

If wes or his fellow Trumpanzees would like to wear an appropriate colonial theme costume for the 4th I know just the thing for them:

I think he should have a new uniform for the parade - after all, he is Commander in Chief. Nothing less than six stars. I am sure his old buddy David Clarke has something he could dolly up with a few more baubles, and lend to Trump for the occasion. A few minutes with a needle and thread and some pieces from Claire's at the mall, and it would be wonderful. (I am reliably informed that Claire's is no more: well, OK, Hobby Lobby then.)

I slept late this morning. Did NPR News this morning include their traditional reading of the complete Declaration of Liberty? It is always a treat for me to hear some of those voices no longer with us, like Red Barber.

Donald Trump‘s aides fear an embarrassingly small crowd may turn out for his tradition-shattering Fourth of July address in Washington DC, according to a report.

The White House has been trying to ensure a high number of attendees in the face of potentially poor weather and a free concert at the far end of the National Mall from the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Post reported.

Crowd size has been a sore point for Mr Trump, who has repeatedly claimed in the face of the evidence that attendance at his inauguration was the highest ever.

The president is set to speak in front of a ticket-only crowd of Republican donors, administration and campaign officials, family members and those who gather to either hear him or protest his policies.

It has been nearly seven decades since a president spoke on the Mall on independence day. The Korean War was taking place when Harry Truman addressed a large gathering on the Washington Monument grounds to mark the 175th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Mr Trump is expected to be flanked by military vehicles amid a huge mobilisation and plans for fly-pasts by fighter jets and a stealth bomber.

He dismissed complaints at the probable high cost of the extravaganza in a tweet on Wednesday.

“The cost of our great Salute to America tomorrow will be very little compared to what it is worth. We own the planes, we have the pilots, the airport is right next door (Andrews), all we need is the fuel. We own the tanks and all. Fireworks are donated by two of the greats. Nice!” he said.

The cost of flying a B-2 Spirit stealth bomber for one hour is $122,311 (£96,500), according to the US Air Force.

John to Abigail, July 3, 1776: I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.

You will think me transported with Enthusiasm but I am not. -- I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure, that it will cost Us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States. -- Yet through all the Gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing Light and Glory. I can see that the End is more than worth all the Means. And that Posterity will tryumph in that Days Transaction, even altho We should rue it, which I trust in God We shall not.

This is hilarious...

The sheet of bullet proof plexiglass in front of Il Boobce is covered in dripping water, and the camera is shooting through it, making him look like a big blurry drip in the middle of a bunch of other drips...

Trump is going to be absolutely furious about this when he finds out...

I have just watched the speech live from the Lincoln Memorial via AON. I too wondered why nobody ran a squeegee over that plastic before the speech began. It seemed to me that the various service flybys were sort of feeble. Surprised the last one did not use colored dye in the exhaust plume. The speech seemed non-political and no particular self-aggrandizement. That was a surprise. The part about the power and impact of our Air Force was a bit over-blown for me. But that was probably typical of this sort of thing.

But the final musical expression from the military chorus was a surprise--Battle Hymn of the Republic, including the line about Christ was born across the sea. . . as he died to make men holy let us die to make men free. . . I heard it sung many times in public during the 50's. I don't remember it ever sung in such a somber manner as it was today.

The crowd shots on OAN made the area look packed. I will wait to see the newspaper reports tomorrow on the actual crowd size, in comparison to the crowd at the Capital.

Do you know why Trump is only given one microphone?

Because if he had TWO microphones, he would think he had to say everything twice.

I couldn't bother to sit through it, did he actually say that the Revolutionary Army took control of the airports in 1781, or was that an Onionesque joke that I read about?
