The movement to ban the plastic version many of us have used our entire lives, while surely well intentioned, took aim at a problem without offering a proper solution. Anybody who’s tried to suck a milkshake through one of those disintegrating wood-pulp-based tubes knows this all too well. But you reallu have to love how straws are anthropomorphized, and acquire the political label of "liberal" by virtue of the material they are constructed from.
It reminds me of Pat Nixon's "republican cloth coat".

A freak accident involving a very disabled woman who shouldn’t have been carrying ANYTHING while walking from place to place, given her propensity to fall over at any moment.
Millions of people are enjoying reusable aluminum straws safely every hour of every day. Maybe you shouldn’t get any; I defer to your own assessment of your lack of ability to use basic tools safely.

I am sure there are people who have accidentally stuck themselves in the eye with metal forks and knives, but I haven't heard that as an argument in favour of plastic ones.
