Hmm... if you say so.

In 1968 the Dixiecrats deserted Hubert Humphrey (and the Democratic Party) in droves, in favor of George Wallace (and the American Independent Party)—who actually managed to win 6 states. By 1971 Nixon and the Republicans had made it quite clear that those voters were welcome in the GOP.

What, you mean that Democrats are still whitewashing (now there's a loaded word!) Robert Byrd for his early KKK sympathies? I should respect Nixon and Reagan because they are the same party as Lincoln?

No: most of us have long known that RMH was an asshole. He proved it many times. He was competent - in an anti-Trump manner - but still an asshole. I have often, in my less sane moments, give St Ronnie a pass on the grounds that he was too fucking stupid to understand where his 'the government is the problem' stance would take us; and that he genuinely meant well, no matter how misguided. No, we now know that despite the sunny persona, he was just another racist dickhead.

What i’m Saying is that the straight line comparison between Reagan and Trump through those words is unfair, intellectually lazy and wrong. Worse by using such a lame brained comparison it ignores all the actual polices Reagan enraged that lead us to where we are now. (Thou shalt not speak I’ll of another republican is a biggie) and that wasn’t even an official policy

That process had already begun in 1964, when their hatred for Johnson and the Civil Right Act he championed, and Goldwater's position that segregation was a states' rights and that the Act was unconstitutional, had led 5 of the 6 to vote overwhelmingly Republican. The same election cemented African-American support for the Democratic Party right down to today.

My point was those type of thoughts were by no means exclusive to Republicans at the time and painting it so is blatantly dishonest It wasn’t only Republican fleeing the cities in droves. Heck it wasn’t until the mid eighties that the US started to collectively care about Apartheid. It is a historical and racial injustice to claim it is and was always just “them”.

It would be if anyone had actually been saying that. Straw man, CP.

Reagan was elected by race-baiting as vicious as anything Trump did. His “welfare queen” narrative was a total lie playing on the worst forms of racist bigotry.

I’m surprised that this is news to anyone.

Precisely, it's the use of racism to divide people and make the racists flock to vote for them that distinguishes the strategy of the Republican Party from at least the 70s onward. The Democratic Party had certainly made it an art form at one point, but pretty much left it behind in the 1800s.

His “government is the problem” trope is the worst thing he ever did, as XKA said. He went for the cheap laugh and wound up gutting us.
