Well, Queen Elizabeth did pretty well but the Spaniards and other furriners may not agree. So Margaret Thatcher is forgiven; Indira Gandhi did a cracking job; Golda Meier is cool again; Aung San Suu Ky has managed to stop all those Rohingya persecutions by waving the magic Nobel Prize; Evita Peron, come back, all is forgiven; Winnie Mandela would have been a wow if she hadn't upped and died; Victoria painted everything pink (but Liz II isn't really a "ruler"); Ranavalona, Madagascar tourist board wishes she was still on top; that raving success, Cleo was cool in Egypt; Aquino, Bhutto... so many who may be better than Barry and me but who knows?

Seriously, is the statement, "you're better than us" a form of condescension? Or is it seen as complimentary (which is how it is intended, no doubt)? What is it that women would do if every nation was run by 'em for two years?

Might not play well in North Korea. And is it damaging to Biden et al that Obama also stated that old white men should step aside (both parties) and let a woman run the show in the USA? Which Republican woman do we think he had in mind? Which Democrat?

Well, I am excited, which is probably illegal. Still, I am energised by the idea that, finally, Labour may have a woman leader. I like the names mentioned so far. I can’t wait for there to be an opposition, nor can I believe there is not some sort of ethical vet who could come and sedate the Jeremy Corbyn cadre for their own peace of mind.

All politics is identity politics in some fashion; "best person for the job" includes factoring in those identity issues -- especially where that job is a unique position that ostensibly involves being representive of the people as a whole.

I'm not sure Sue, but that seems pretty much like choosing the best person taking into account all of his or her attributes. All women are not the same (nor are all men for that matter), but I see Obama's comments as pandering and condescending. By all means women should be part of the pool from which the best person is chosen, but the choice still needs to be made on a person by person basis. As Meade pointed out, a nation run by Indira Ghandi is not preferable to one run by a man.

I don't know, I've been up in court against some women who "battled" as tough as any male, and then would be happy to go out for lunch or drinks after the trial or hearing was done, just like many male attorneys would. It all depends on the person and the particular circumstances. I've also known some male attorneys who were the opposite, who took everything personally and would continue to hold grudges well after the trial/hearing concluded. It all depends on one's personality. For example, I would put Trump, who can't let any perceived insult/slight/even disagreement pass without striking back (and holding grudges) in that latter personality type.

How many times have women said "she is the most qualified" only to hear back "you're only voting for her because she's a woman." I stopped counting, back in 2007.... and yet I still hear it, all the effing time. Because, apparently, I'm too stupid to be able to analyze anything beyond gender? Because my silly little female brain couldn't possibly understand more than once concept at a time?

Look at how women leaders and candidates are criticized and analyzed, as compared to men, and tell me again how it's only about who is the "most qualified."

It is actually possible to be a fully realized man, to be successful in life, including family, business, and the rest of it, to respect women, and not be threatened by them, to include them in all aspects of decision-making and life, to not need "rules" about interacting with them, to not need to control them, and to even like them (not just as carriers of your seed and spawn). These men, these allies, have far richer, more satisfying, and better lives than some of you could ever even contemplate. Many of you are just dinosaurs (not quail). Thank the goddess you'll eventually be extinct.
