One day after reopening, ice cream parlor closes to public after employees harassed by customers

MASHPEE, Mass. — A Cape Cod ice cream shop’s opening day will now be its last — at least for now, after the owner claimed his employees were disrespected by angry customers.

Kyle Lawrence, owner of Polar Cave Ice Cream Parlour in Mashpee, told WFXT-TV that he wanted to open his shop quietly on Friday to kick off Mother’s Day weekend.

He added that he has been able to open his shop under restaurant guidelines, but that he wanted to wait until he felt it was safe to do so. Unfortunately, Friday was anything but business as usual.

“One of my best workers quit yesterday at the end of her shift, she stuck it through her shift,” he explained. “But the words she was called and the language, you wouldn’t even say in a men’s locker room. And to say it to a 17-year-old kid, they should be ashamed of themselves.”

According to Lawrence, it was posted online that all orders had to be placed one hour in advance.

Still, he claimed, customers didn’t listen and instead took their anger out on his employees when the parlor got busy and staff could not fill orders right away.

“All of the sudden word spread like wildfire and nobody listened to what we told them about the protocol we had set up,” he said Saturday. “People have forgotten how to treat other human beings in the six or seven weeks that they’ve been confined to their homes. They have no clue how to respect other human beings.”

Lawrence announced on his Facebook page that he would no longer be open to the public and would work to explore new options.
On Saturday, he said he was serving a limited number of customers, many of whom did not get their ice cream on Friday, until he could figure out a new plan to reopen to everyone.

“It’s a completely different world that we’re living in, and people are going to have to adjust and learn that we don’t know,” he said. “We’re trying.”

Polar Cave Ice Cream Parlour is one example of a small business that has owners now trying to figure out how to reopen from a pandemic shutdown. Other businesses have also reported having to deal with customers who are not always choosing to follow new safety guidelines.

Lawrence told WFXT-TV that he is friends with other ice cream shop owners around the world who have also been forced to close down after their opening day.

He said he hopes people will be more patient and treat each other with kindness.

“We’re not claiming that we know what we’re doing. We don’t know what we’re doing, but we’re giving it a shot,” he said.

I just read that in the local news and going to check out the Facebook comments.

My favorite local drive-in - fabulous ice cream, but also burgers, lobstah rolls, fish & chips, etc. - reopened after a month with extensive signage, tape on the floors, mandatory mask requirements, and phone ahead orders required - ice cream served in cups only - but the owner who I’m friendly with tells me a lot of folks are ignoring all the rules and expecting to be served when they walk in the out door without a mask and having not bothered to call ahead. I don’t envy him the added stress in what is already a stressful, thin margin biz. I really hope he doesn’t decide to close up shop entirely - his fish & chips is among the best I’ve ever had.
For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.

Be afraid. Very afraid.

"Scientists have claimed the coronavirus can enter the body through the eyes after finding they contain a protein used by the infection to bind to cells.

The coronavirus - scientifically called SARS-CoV-2 - latches onto ACE-2 receptors, known as the 'gateway' into cells inside body.

These receptors are found in the respiratory tract and the lungs, which is where the virus first infiltrates cells, as well as other organs.

A team led by Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine have now found the eyes produce ACE-2, making them a target for the virus."

The revolt by a dozen or more Pennsylvania counties who are opening up their businesses against the dictatorial edicts of Democrat Governor Tom Wolf has apparently thrown him into a blind rage, which was further exacerbated by a Tweet from President Trump in support of Pennsylvania patriots and a news conference by State Senator and gubernatorial aspirant Doug Mastriano, in which he called for the resignation of the incompetent Health Secretary Rachel Levine.

Wolf attacked business owners who reopen from coronavirus shutdowns before they are allowed and the politicians who have encouraged them, calling them “cowardly”, threatening serious consequences to both groups.

Wolf said he would revoke state licenses for businesses that open early and stop some state funding to county governments, saying businesses that open before the state allows could lose licenses that are required to operate, including liquor licenses, health certificates and certificates of occupancy.

“These folks are choosing to desert in the face of the enemy, in the middle of a war that Pennsylvanians are winning and must win,” said Wolf, seemingly angry at times, at a press briefing."

Harrisburg Bureau of Codes insiders said they needed strong language like 'revoke' to force compliance. Internally the strategy will be to suspend these business licenses, but once their respective county gets a yellow/green designation the State will reinstate these licenses -- prosecution will be dropped except for the most egregious offenders.

It appears to be working judging by subsequent media news items.

I doubt Wolf will be impeached and removed given the makeup of the legislature. Looks like there's heat.

Gov. Cuomo Says New York Now ‘Safe’ to Reopen on May 15 as Coronavirus Cases, Death Toll Drops

"New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday announced the light at the end of the coronavirus pandemic tunnel, revealing regions of the Empire State should prepare for reopening after the state-wide pause is set to end on May 15.
“We start a new chapter today in many ways. It’s a new phase,” Cuomo said at a press briefing from Rochester Regional Health. “We are, from my point of view, on the other side of the mountain. Now we can intelligently turn toward reopening.”

As the rate of new COVID-19 cases in New York has declined to the rate of “about where we started this horrific situation,” Cuomo said the state is ready to begin a “safe” and prepared reopening."

"R.E.M. made their historic visit to Mountain Stage 29 years ago this week. The appearance was just one of three shows scheduled to promote their upcoming release "Out of Time." The other appearances included in the media tour were "Saturday Night Live" and MTV's "Unplugged."

The anniversary is all the reason we need to revisit their performance of "It's The End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" recorded live in Charleston, W.Va. on April 28th, 1991"

RUSH: There's one other big story out there -- and this, you're not gonna hear about. From the Daily Wire: "15 Days After Lockdown Ease, Georgia Sees Lowest Day of COVID Hospitalizations -- Republican governor Brian Kemp of Georgia celebrated the state's lowest number of hospitalized novel coronavirus patients and the fewest number of COVID-19 patients on ventilators on Saturday, 15 days," two weeks, after Georgia opened up.

This is from the Johns Hopkins data:

Image

There hasn't been a spike. But it does look to me (and I don't have the raw data so I have not given it any kind of statistical analysis) as if a modest downwards trend was halted. I don't know if the apparent uptick since April 24 (when they reopened) is significant. I assume that the Saturday that Gov Kemp was boasting about was the last point on this chart. One day hardly makes a pattern and it's at best disingenuous to make anything of it. We'll see in a few days if it was worth getting excited about. By the way and for the record, I want these numbers to go down. Republicans and the orange turd in particular would have you believe that those opposed to him want the numbers to go up because we want him to fail. Far from it.

Regardless, it's a bit like driving 1000 miles with a defective seat belt. Chances are you'll get away with it and be OK. But why would you do that? It's all about balancing risk and I think Georgia's actions, based on the available evidence at the time, was ill advised.

Edited a couple of times to correct typos and clarify.

Germany's rate of COVID-19 infection doubles after lockdown restrictions are eased

Germany’s coronavirus reproduction rate — the crucial measure that shows how widely the virus is spreading in the community — has risen to 1.1, giving rise to fears that a second wave of infections may be imminent.

The findings come just days after the country began the first phase of relaxing its coronavirus lockdown measures, while anti-lockdown protests have been building across the country.

Germany has been lauded internationally for its co-ordinated response to the virus and its corresponding low death rate, with 7,549 having fallen victim to the disease there until Saturday, compared with 31,587 in the UK, which has a smaller population.

However, the rise in recent infections suggests that the lockdown relaxation may have been premature, and is a headache for Chancellor Angela Merkel who has limits on her powers in Germany’s decentralised system.

When she announced a relaxation of lockdown measures on Wednesday, Germany’s reproduction rate was at 0.65, before rising to 0.81 on Friday and 1.1 on Saturday.

A rate of 1 or more means that each carrier of the virus infects at least one other person, ensuring that case numbers continue to grow. Germany’s Robert Koch Institute which compiled the figures, said that at this stage it cannot be determined whether the relaxed lockdown was responsible. It said: “The increase in the estimated (reproduction) value makes it necessary to watch the development very carefully over the next few days.”

The findings come from data compiled on Saturday, and show that the infection rate has now effectively doubled in the three days since the relaxation of lockdown restrictions.

On Saturday, outbreaks at several meat-packing plants in North Rhine-Westphalia — the country’s most heavily populated state — prompted the local leadership to promise to test each of the estimated 18-20,000 meat workers in the state. In the western town of Coesfeld, where 151 of 200 slaughterhouse workers tested positive for the virus, authorities decided to suspend lockdown relaxations.

Despite the local outbreaks, Armin Laschet, the prime minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, called for the country’s border with France to be reopened in order to foster European solidarity.

Mrs Merkel struck a different tone when announcing the first phase of relaxations in midweek, reminding the German public “we still have a long fight against the virus ahead of us”.

Despite the continued danger posed by Covid-19, protesters took to the streets across Germany at the weekend to criticise the lockdown measures.

Thousands gathered in Berlin, Frankfurt, Stuttgart and other German cities, complaining that the government and medical workers were spreading panic.

In Munich, more than 3,000 people – many without masks and not respecting social distancing rules – gathered in the city’s central Marienplatz, with signs critical of “health fascism” and proclaiming: “We want our lives back”.

Although there have been consistent protests against the measures since they were first put in place in March, the weekend’s demonstrations were the biggest seen so far since the outbreak began.

Dieter Reiter, the mayor of Munich, was heavily critical of the protesters yesterday and said he found it “absolutely unbearable” that the protests had a heavy presence from known far-Right groups.

Gainesville has become hot spot for coronavirus cases in Georgia, a state just starting to reopen

(CNN)Although the new coronavirus has been spreading through the United States for months, and there are cities seeing a flattening of the curve, some areas of the country have recently begun to find an uptick of cases.

Some of these hot spots are in states that have just begun allowing businesses to reopen.

In Georgia, Gov. Brian Kemp said the state will open a temporary medical pod in cities such as Gainesville, about an hour northeast of Atlanta.

Gainesville is "being stressed pretty hard ... at the moment," Kemp said Tuesday. The governor mentioned last week that while some areas of the state have seen reduced cases, Gainesville has an increase and area hospitals have had more hospitalizations.

The high number of daily hospitalizations for Covid-19 has continued this week.

Many governors win bipartisan support for handling of pandemic, but some Republicans face blowback over reopening efforts

May 12, 2020 at 3:30 a.m. PDT

Governors collectively have been winning widespread praise from the public for their handling of the coronavirus pandemic, often with the kind of bipartisan approval that has eluded President Trump. But a large-scale Washington Post-Ipsos poll finds that some Republican governors who have embraced reopening their states are struggling to achieve that consensus.

The survey of more than 8,000 adults reveals a wide range in the assessments of Republican governors, but not for their Democratic counterparts. The disparities appear to be linked not solely to partisanship, but also to the differing paths the governors have adopted as they seek to balance efforts to contain the spread of the virus while trying to limit the damage to their economies.

The contrast is widest in two states won by Trump in 2016. In Ohio, 86 percent of adults say they approve of the way Gov. Mike DeWine (R), who moved aggressively to close down his state and has been cautious about lifting the restrictions, has dealt with the crisis. In Georgia, 39 percent of adults approve of the performance of Gov. Brian Kemp (R), who moved less swiftly than some other governors to mitigate the spread and has been in the forefront of reopening the economy there.

Image

Overall, 71 percent of Americans approve of their governors’ performances, with majority approval from people in both major parties. A much smaller 43 percent approve of Trump’s efforts. In Trump’s case, assessments are dramatically partisan, with more than 8 in 10 Republicans and Republican-leaning independents approving of his handling of the crisis and almost 9 in 10 Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents disapproving.

In the two largest states with Democratic governors, Gov. Gavin Newsom (Calif.) and Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo (N.Y.) receive positive marks from about 8 in 10 adults. Those lofty positive ratings dip significantly in the two largest states with Republican governors. In Florida, 60 percent of adults give Gov. Ron DeSantis positive ratings, while in Texas, 57 percent say they approve of the way Gov. Greg Abbott has handled the pandemic.

Newsom and Cuomo earn positive marks from people in both parties, although their own party is more favorable. For Cuomo, 93 percent of Democrats and 58 percent of Republicans approve of the job he has done. For Newsom, the numbers are nearly identical, with 89 percent of Democrats and 58 percent of Republicans offering positive assessments.

The lower approval numbers for the governors of Texas and Florida reflect negative assessments from Democrats in their states, according to the Post-Ipsos poll, which was conducted from April 27 to May 4. While at least 8 in 10 Republicans in each of those states say they approve of the performance of their governor, fewer than 4 in 10 Democrats say the same.

Ohio’s DeWine has succeeded more than any large-state governor in attracting broad, bipartisan support. He wins 84 percent approval among his fellow Republicans, along with 90 percent approval among Democrats. That is a dramatic contrast with the president, whose handling of the crisis is approved by 89 percent of Ohio Republicans but only 12 percent of Ohio Democrats.

The range across these states is notable given that the survey simply asked people whether they approved of “your state’s governor.” The respondents were not prompted with either the name of the governor or the governor’s political party.

A 74 percent majority of Americans overall say the United States should keep trying to slow the spread of the coronavirus even if it means keeping many businesses closed, while 25 percent say the country should open up businesses and get the economy going again, even if the result would be more infections.

Across 12 states with sample sizes large enough to break down results, from Pennsylvania to Texas to California, at least 7 in 10 say they prefer focusing on slowing the virus’s spread rather than beginning to reopen businesses.

Abbott, DeSantis and Kemp face blowback for reopening their states on a faster schedule. Nationally, 56 percent of Americans say their state government has handled restrictions on businesses “about right,” with 28 percent saying restrictions have been lifted “too quickly” and 16 percent saying they have not been lifted quickly enough. But nearly half of Floridians (48 percent) and majorities in both Texas (59 percent) and Georgia (65 percent) say their state government is “lifting restrictions too quickly.”

Since that announcement, the Cruise Planners representative says, Carnival bookings shot up 600% compared to the previous three days before news of August Carnival trips were announced.
