I’m down with Wilfred and the dangers of glorifying war, but it’s despicable to mock those who sacrifice their lives for their country. I hope you don’t suggest Owen and Trump are somehow compatriots.

Owen knew first-hand the meaning of duty, the horrors of war and (perhaps) the cynicism of those who demand such blood sacrifice, always of others. I don't know Sue, I think some go running headlongtoward the conflict because they honestly believe the bullshit, and I could call them suckers (or maybe people who were suckered) in a way (just as I could call men who enlisted in the Confederate Army the same). Others are converts who buy into the bullshit. Still others are people who go along and do what they are expected to do because they fear condemnation (or even because they feel being seen as a patriot will help their career-especially a political career). And finally some, I'd bet the largest group, are conscripts--those who are made to fight. But whatever the reason, they are all just as dead and are all victims of the bullshit; they clearly do not deserve the disrespect of an ass like Trump.

I include those on the group of true believers. There are times when that belief is justified and the threat is real, but most of the time they are manufactured by leaders serving their own interests.

But I do think even victims of the bullshit do deserve the opportunities Andy described.

It doesn’t matter if the weather and transportation or security issues were in play - what matters is his words and actions in bullying and disrespecting service members and Gold and Blue Star families over the past 5 years (inclusive of the campaign). He’s unfit to serve because HE DOESN’T UNDERSTAND SERVICE.
