Owen knew first-hand the meaning of duty, the horrors of war and (perhaps) the cynicism of those who demand such blood sacrifice, always of others. At 74 years old, Trump has not an inkling of what Owen knew at 25, and is the leading example of those who mouth the old lie without understanding -- or worse, as a deliberate con.

Glorifying the military and venerating the war dead is always tricky business, in my view, as there has hardly ever been a war truly waged for a just cause, and particularly WWI. But although they may have been ruthlessly exploited pawns, those who died in battle are not "losers" or "suckers." They are victims of decision-makers who see them as expendable resources in their quest for wealth, power and control.
