Several boats sink during Texas parade for President Trump

Updated 2:31 pm PDT, Saturday, September 5, 2020

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A spokesperson for the Travis County sheriff’s office in Texas says “several” boats sank Saturday while taking part in a parade in support of President Donald Trump.

“We responded to multiple calls of boats in distress, several of them sank,” but there are no reports of fatalities or injuries and investigators have not determined how many boats sank on the lake near Austin, according to sheriff's spokesperson Kristen Dark.

Dark said the cause was under investigation, but there was no indication of an intentional act.

“We have no reason to suspect foul play in any of these,” sinkings, Dark said.

Dark said weather conditions were generally calm and meteorologist Paul Yura with the National Weather Service in Austin/San Antonio said there were were no storms in the area at the time and winds were generally 10 mph (16 kph) or less.

“The lake should be fairly navigable, without issue at those wind speeds," according to Yura.

Lake Travis is an approximately 19,000-acre (7,689 hectares) impoundment about 12 miles (19 kilometers) northwest of Austin.

Your collective inability to acknowledge this obvious truth makes you all look like fools.

The problem is, he wasn't on any of them.

Can't help but wonder if this isn't natural selection at work.

You take all those Sunday sailors on boats that were not designed to carry a sail (REAL sailboats have a heavy keel, a centerboard or daggerboard, or are at least ballasted to prevent capsizing).  Now add all those ⃥b⃥e⃥d⃥s⃥h⃥e⃥e⃥t⃥s⃥ ⃥f⃥l⃥a⃥p⃥p⃥i⃥n⃥g⃥ ⃥i⃥n⃥ ⃥t⃥h⃥e⃥ ⃥w⃥i⃥n⃥d⃥  flags flying in the breeze, catching the air and making the boat more tippy, and the next thing you know, you've got water coming over the gunwales and Davy Jones gets a new piece of equipment to stow away in his locker.

Yes I had the same thought when I saw all those flags. They are not helping the stability of those craft.

Also many are likely overloaded; it’s a common problem in recreational boating that some consider number of passengers but not weight of the passengers - in a wake or other situation that makes the boat unsteady, being overweight makes it much easier to swamp the boat.

Losers. I like boats that don't sink.

A rising tide raises all boats. (If you're well-off enough to own a boat.)

A rising wake sinks small boats.

Apparently there was another boat parade yesterday, this time on Presque Isle Bay in Erie PA.  This one seemed to go a little bit better; at least there were no boats reported to have been swamped/sunk this time around — although maybe they learned their lesson from Austin, since they stayed within the protected confines of the harbor created by Presque Isle and the peninsula/causeway out to it.

But I can't help noticing ... boat parades for Trump; and boats like the ones we've been seeing aren't exactly inexpensive toys.  We've also been treated to countless pictures of oversized, jacked-up, chrome-laden, late-model ⃥p⃥e⃥n⃥i⃥s⃥ ⃥s⃥u⃥b⃥s⃥t⃥i⃥t⃥u⃥t⃥e⃥s⃥  pick-up trucks festooned with these same Trump flags flying from poles mounted along their cargo beds — and those bad boys don't come cheap either.  What's next — a fly-by of all the personal and corporate jets of the 3% in support of Trump and his reverse-Robin Hood policies of "steal from the poor and give to the rich"?

Clearly, it's safer to boat by mail. This is just another attempt at boater suppression.

So boaters should request an absentee ballast?
