So is it "against the law" to not vote in an election in the UK? I'm genuinely curious here.

Could it be a way of determining who did not vote and why, such as deceased ... so they can be removed from the 'active voter' rolls?

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

Not sure how ballots are cast, but I would imagine one could refrain from voting for any candidate, even if they did submit a ballot to comply with the voting law.

Were you a citizen in Oz? Or did they send that note to all residents and you just tick the "Pommy bastard" box and they let you off with a warning? Or if you are/were a citizen can they still require you to vote even though non resident?

I have Australian citizenship, in effect, dual nationality.

Were you supposed to apply for an absentee ballot, or a waiver due to non-residence? Will they waive the fine for not voting given you weren’t in residence?

Ordinarily they'd sentence him to a year's labor at a sheep station, but he'd like that.

"Sheep station" aka "Welsh brothel".

The worse that will happen is a $20 fine, and a black mark against my name.

Shorely shome mishtake? Is 'name' a quaint Cornish word for "groin"?
