ATLANTA – Newt Gingrich says his passion for his country contributed to his marital infidelity. In an interview posted Wednesday by The Christian Broadcasting Network, Gingrich — who recently converted to Catholicism — said he had sought God's forgiveness for mistakes in his past.
"There's no question at times of my life, partially driven by how passionately I felt about this country, that I worked far too hard and things happened in my life that were not appropriate," Gingrich said.
"What I can tell you is that when I did things that were wrong, I wasn't trapped in situation ethics, I was doing things that were wrong, and yet, I was doing them," he said. "I found that I felt compelled to seek God's forgiveness. Not God's understanding, but God's forgiveness." * * *

Despite his intelligence and political smarts, he'll never be president because he regularly puts his foot in his mouth. Could say the same thing about Joe Biden.

So he's saying Clinton was passionate about America as well?

"... that I worked far too hard and things happened in my life that were not appropriate," Gingrich said. ... "
You have to admire his use of the passive voice combined with claiming that his infidelity was REALLY the result of a virtue.
"things happened" not "I did things" see? passive voice. What a Perfect Republican toad.

There's a difference between putting your foot in your mouth and talking out your ass

Kinda but that was Monica's mouth, nichts wahr?
I apologise. My passion for some country or other drove me to that remark. Hope I don't have to become a Roman churcher.
And rubato, yes passive voice there - well spotted - but in the following sentences he clearly states that what he did was plain wrong and he had no right to blame any "situation" ethic. Also I think their "passion for his country ead to infidelity" leader is very weak. The passion for his country (he claims) lead him to work too hard.
at times of my life, partially driven by how passionately I felt about this country, that I worked far too hard
Because he worked too hard he got himself into bad things:
and things happened in my life that were not appropriate,"
I'd guess he means he was away from home a lot and thrown into the company of desirable (but obviously legally-blind) women
Is there anyone in the known universe who thinks that NG could even be nominated to run for the Presidency? I think he can put his foot wherever and it makes no difference. Perhaps not?
Cheers
Meade

If W could run and win (well bring it to a statistical tie), anything is possible.

His joining the Catholic Church is more than a little bit problematic. The RC church is one of the few that takes Jesus' words about marriage & divorce seriously. It would take a lot of dancin' to come up with any conclusion other than, in the eyes of the RC church he is currently living in sin.
Be that as it may...
I can see what he is saying about working too hard (though I have never been in that situation). You end up working 20 hours a day, 7 days a week, you neglect your responsibilities at home and the relationship with the spouse deteriorates, you find yourself exposed to temptations (political groupies), and you give in because you are weak and horny and exhausted.
Still, God's mercy is not finite for those who truly repent.
But his notion of possibly running for president is crazy. He has more baggage than the USAirways lost luggage room (would fill the famous Pittsburgh Civic Arena). Even people who politically "love" him wouldn't vote for him.
Just like the lady from Alaska, the preacher, and the former Senator from Pennsylvania. They are all crazy as bedbugs if they think they have any chance of getting past the first primary.
It's a curious phenomenon. The R's have a number of fantastic people who could run and easily beat the empty suit in the WH. One can only hope that the primary process does not spit out a horrible candidate as happened last time.

I'm pretty sure he could get an annulment, like many others have done. Didn't one of the Kennedys get one a while back?

Annulments are based on the proposition that the prior marriage was null and void (I believe W1 is deceased). In gross terms, the prior marriage can be annulled if one or both parties entered into it under false pretenses - never actually intended to enter into Christian marriage.
This is not as easy as it was a few decades ago, but I guess one has to assume he has these bases covered, otherwise he wouldn't have gone public with his conversion.
