Bay Area-raised funnyman Dana Carvey nails Joe Biden impression

Amy Graff

Dana Carvey has a new muse.

Carvey, who famously impersonated the late President George H.W. Bush, is taking on the new top dog in the White House.

The funnyman appeared on Tuesday night's episode of "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" and poked gentle fun at President Joe Biden for being too nice, relatable and soft spoken.

Carvey joked on Tuesday night that his favorite role to play is Biden at a town hall — "when he's the gentle father to the country and he looks like the alien who came off the spaceship in 'Close Encounters.'"

In a voice mimicking Biden's choppy speech pattern of fragmented phrases, Carvey says, "Folks, come on folks, let's get real, not kidding around here. You know, we got to do the thing, we did Barrack, we did the deal, you know, my dad, lost his job in Scranton, no joke, no joke."

Comedian Rob Delaney gave Carvey's impersonation an A+ and shared a clip on Twitter that's going viral.

Carvey, who launched his comic career in San Francisco Bay Area clubs in the 1970s, appeared on the show to promote his new podcast Fantastic.

Carvey has impersonated many presidents over the years and his take on Bush became a "Saturday Night Live" staple during the 41st president's term. “Not gonna do it. Wouldn’t be prudent.” was among his laugh lines.

Carvey famously impersonated President George Bush on Saturday Night Live and even roasted Bush in person in front of his staff, referenced one particularly unsettling moment of Mr. Bush’s presidency — when he grew ill during a state dinner in Tokyo and vomited on the Japanese prime minister — and imitated Mr. Bush with a series of exaggerated hand gestures, according to the New York Times.

When Carvey was 3 years old, his family moved from Montana to San Carlos. He attended Tierra Linda Junior High in San Carlos and Carlmont High in Belmont. He attended S.F. State University where in 1977 he won the San Francisco Standup Comedy Competition.
