Labour, tackling anti-Jewish Jews...

An 82-year-old Jewish woman, who is being investigated by Labour for alleged antisemitism for the third time in less than three years, is threatening legal action against the party, claiming it has unlawfully discriminated against her based on her belief in anti-Zionism.

Diana Neslen, who lives in east London, regularly attends her local synagogue and keeps a kosher home but has been accused of antisemitism for tweets she has posted about Israel and Zionism.

In a pre-action letter to Labour, her lawyers, Bindmans, say the party’s investigation is totally unjustified and disproportionate as it rests on a single tweet from 2017, which said “the existence of the state of Israel is a racist endeavour and I am an antiracist Jew”.

They claim anti-Zionism is a protected philosophical belief under the Equality Act and Neslen has been “subjected by the party to discrimination and harassment related to her protected philosophical belief”.

Neslen, who said she was a “committed Zionist” before she visited Israel, told the Guardian: “I remember thinking at the end of the war, ‘Why didn’t the Germans do anything?’ When there’s injustice done in your name you cannot close your eyes to it. That’s why I feel very strongly.

“The Labour party has no idea in my opinion of what antisemitism is. My son was attacked by a luminary of the BNP [British National party] who was jailed for three years. I remember picking up the phone and being subjected to death threats from the BNP. People who have never experienced antisemitism have no idea what it means, what it means for a Jew to be found guilty of antisemitism.”

Neslen, who grew up in South Africa, said she had spent her life fighting apartheid and racism. In 2018, while mourning the death of her husband of 51 years and having recently been diagnosed with cancer, she was sent a “reminder of conduct” accusing her of antisemitic comments on social media.

In February this year, she was given a “formal NEC warning relating to your conduct”. Bindmans said all bar one of the tweets cited in the latest investigation, which she was notified of in August, were excluded under party rules either because they were before she rejoined the party in 2015 or were considered in the previous investigation.

In 2018 Labour, beset by antisemitism allegations, adopted the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism, which includes as an example: “Denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination, eg by claiming that the existence of a state of Israel is a racist endeavour.”

Neslen is a a member of Jewish Voice for Labour, which says it knows of 42 Jewish members of the Labour party, two of whom have since died, who have faced or are facing disciplinary charges relating to allegations of antisemitism. The group estimates that over five times more Jewish than non-Jewish Labour members have faced actioned complaints of antisemitism.

The letter from Bindmans quotes the judge who, in the case of Maya Forstater earlier this year, determined that gender-critical views were a protected philosophical belief, saying “only if the belief involves a very grave violation of the rights of others, tantamount to the destruction of those rights, would it be one that was not worthy of respect in a democratic society”.

Neslen is threatening to sue Labour if it does not apologise and undertake not to pursue further investigations against her in respect of her beliefs.

Labour has not replied to letters from her lawyers and did not respond to a request for comment from the Guardian.

Labour can't win. I think Jeremy Corbyn was unfairly accused of anti-Semitism by many, especially outside the party, because he opposed Zionism. Being opposed to Zionism is, I think, a perfectly valid political viewpoint and there are many Israeli Jews who share it. Doesn't make me, or them, an anti-Semite.

There was a story in the Guardian this morning about a UK TV presenter who was awarded £!0,000 because she was defamed on Twitter. Corbyn had an egg thrown at him; that same day the presenter reposted a Twitter story about someone else - not Corbyn - who had an egg thrown at him.
Riley [the TV presenter] initially posted a screenshot of a January 2019 tweet by the Guardian columnist Owen Jones about an attack on the former British National party leader Nick Griffin [who really is a fascist anti-Semite], which said: “I think sound life advice is, if you don’t want eggs thrown at you, don’t be a Nazi.” She added “good advice”, with emojis of a red rose [Corbyn is a keen gardener and the red rose has long been associated with him and the Labour movement] and an egg.

Later, Murray [an aide to Corbyn] tweeted: “Today Jeremy Corbyn went to his local mosque for Visit My Mosque Day, and was attacked by a Brexiteer. Rachel Riley tweets that Corbyn deserves to be violently attacked because he is a Nazi. This woman is as dangerous as she is stupid. Nobody should engage with her. Ever.”

Riley said she was being sarcastic in her tweet, did not call Corbyn a Nazi, and told the judge that Murray’s tweet caused serious harm to her reputation.
I liked Rachel Riley until now. She is sharp and can be funny. But this disingenuous 'My reputation has been seriously harmed!' bleating has had exactly that effect.

What kind of investigation is this? One to expel her from the party because she dares to disagree with one thing they stand for. While I can understnd her fighting it, after she wins, I hope she resigns and says she cannot abide being linked together with people sho would launch an investigation like this.

Context Andy, context.
Ms Riley posted a screenshot of a January 2019 Tweet by a Guardian columnist about an attack on former British National Party leader Nick Griffin which said: “I think sound life advice is, if you don’t want eggs thrown at you, don’t be a Nazi.”

Ms Riley added the comment “good advice”, along with emojis of a red rose and an egg.

In her response, Ms Murray tweeted: “Today Jeremy Corbyn went to his local mosque for visit My Mosque Day, and was attacked by a Brexiteer. Rachel Riley tweets that Corbyn deserves to be violently attacked because he is a Nazi. This woman is as dangerous as she is stupid. Nobody should engage with her. Ever.”

Ms Riley sued for libel, arguing her own message had been sarcastic, that she did not call Mr Corbyn a Nazi, and claiming Ms Murray’s response had caused damage to her reputation.
The person she was quoting was Owen Jones, a columnist for the Guardian, who is (still believe it or not,) Corbyn's main cheerleader in the paper ands social media. When you're in teh public eye as Rachel R is, having your reputation smeared the way hers was can cause lasting damage.

And, apart from that, she's fucking gorgeous too.

So allowing a faction to run a country under the laws of their religion is bad if it's the something like Iraq or Iran being run by the Taliban and Muslinism, but Israel and Zionist Jews get a pass.   Got it.

I am sympathetic to this woman at the head of this thread. I do not like the term 'anti-semetic' I think it is dishonest. It always really means anti-jewish. Yet there are many cultural groups that are Semitic, but not Jewish--such as the Palestinians. It is not rare for Jews from various parts of the world to not be 'Zionist' There are also many 'christian' groups with no cultural or historic connection to the tribe of Judah yet are 'Zionist' .
