That's the way it works. The leader of the party voted in as the majority in Parliament is automatically PM. The Tory party is still the majority. Their leader has resigned as PM and as their leader. The majority party selects a new leader who is the new PM by default. Nothing wrong with that.Econoline wrote: ↑Tue Sep 06, 2022 9:32 pmHere's where I guess somebody should mention that despite the US political system being (yes, Gob) all fucked up, the UK system does not seem to make any more sense. Truss defeated Sunak in the Conservative Party leadership contest with 81,326 votes to 60,399.
...which means that less than 0.3 percent of Britain’s 67 million residents actually selected the new prime minister.![]()
Well...duh.
There is no popular vote for POTUS.
Yes. But recent Prime Ministers have behaved a lot like Presidents. Tony Blair even talked about the Blair Administration. David Cameron thought he was a President; and so did Boris Johnson. Teresa May I think hewed more to the prima inter pares view of the role.MajGenl.Meade wrote: ↑Wed Sep 07, 2022 12:18 amBeing Prime Minister is not like being President. Jacob Rees Mogg is a fucking idiot and his boss even more of a moron if that is possible. He does not know the difference between weather and climate. THEY ARE NOT THE SAME THING, JACOB.Rees-Mogg has claimed that “climate alarmism” is responsible for high energy prices and that it is unrealistic for scientists to project future changes to the climate because meteorologists struggle to correctly predict the weather.
We don't vote for prime ministers, we vote for parties. Parties choose their leaders. Having a supreme, autocratic, (fascistic?) system where one person becomes the figurehead, would be awful.
Remind you of anywhere?Fascism is a far-right, authoritarian, ultranationalist political ideology and movement, characterized by a dictatorial leader, centralized autocracy, militarism, forcible suppression of opposition, belief in a natural social hierarchy, subordination of individual interests for the perceived good of the nation and race, and strong regimentation of society and the economy
Didn't Hitler (yeah, I know, we shouldn't raise the nazis, but then they are a good example of fascism, which you raised in your next point) get his power from a parliamentary system? Rule of the party is not any guarantee of avoiding totalitarianism. FWIW, the communists have done that for years.Parties choose their leaders. Having a supreme, autocratic, (fascistic?) system where one person becomes the figurehead, would be awful.
Change far-right too far left and change the nation and race to the people of the world, then you have the American Democratic Party. To liberals, the purpose of the US government is to see to the interest of the world's people, even if that means American citizens eating out of garbage cans and living under bridges.Gob wrote: ↑Wed Sep 07, 2022 10:07 amWe don't vote for prime ministers, we vote for parties. John Crace is always worth reading but I have come across him only in the last few months. His point is roughly the same one we experienced this side of the pond, when for four long years we yearned for the statesman GW Bush.BoSoxGal wrote: ↑Fri Sep 30, 2022 1:56 amThis guy makes Truss sound very, very useless.
Half-witted, reckless Librium Liz may be even worse than May and Johnson
