Trump lawyers fined

Is this a first? Don't recall seeing one before.

NYT is reporting that four Trump lawyers who filed lawsuits on his behalf are fined $50K between them.
WASHINGTON — A federal judge in Florida imposed sanctions on Thursday against a group of lawyers for former President Donald J. Trump who handled a sprawling lawsuit that accused Hillary Clinton and a range of Mr. Trump’s perceived enemies of a vast conspiracy against him.
So it's $12.5K each if I understand correctly which I assume is chickenfeed compared to their fees unless they were on a total contingency which is probably SOP for Trump. Don't know.

Perhaps some of our legal beagles can tell me if this is indeed a first in Trump World and whether, in your view, it is enough to put an end to his legal machinations. He of course like any citizen has the right to seek legal redress but there comes a point - and I think he passed it many many times - when use of the legal system becomes abuse and fines (or, in the UK system, costs) are appropriate.

PS this was 4 days ago and I have only just now seen it.

Had you not heard of this case? $175,000 in sanctions imposed by the court. Giuliani was ultimately also disbarred which is the ultimate financial penalty.

Yes I remembered that Giuliani had been disbarred by the NYS people but had forgotten about the Michigan case and Sidney Powell et al. As you say, disbarment is the ultimate financial penalty.

Oh dear, you grossly misunderestimate the earning potential of Trump-related grift in spreading The Big Lie:
A nonprofit group run by pro-Trump lawyer Sidney Powell raised $16.4 million in the year following the 2020 election and spent less than half that money, according to the group’s tax filings.

Defending the Republic, whose mission is to use the courts to “protect election integrity” and individual freedoms, reported that it spent about $8 million in the 12-month period ending Nov. 30, 2021. That sum included more than $3.8 million for legal services and another $2 million for “other” services, including litigation support. It said those services were provided by “nonemployees” it did not name.

***
The new documents show that spreading election falsehoods is “incredibly lucrative,” said Brendan Fischer, deputy executive director of the watchdog organization Documented, which scrutinizes the activities of nonprofits and corporations and also obtained the tax filings. But the filings, the organization’s Form 990 and related attachments submitted to the Internal Revenue Service, reveal “almost nothing about where the nonprofit’s millions in reported legal expenses are flowing,” he said.

In an email responding to detailed questions from The Post, Powell wrote: “Defending The Republic Inc. has independent accountants, legal counsel, and auditors. If there are errors or omissions in the 990, it will be corrected as soon as possible.”

Anybody ever tally up the total cost of that semi-endless audit in Arizona run by a special high-tech company that was looking for molecules of Chinese bamboo in the ballots, and lots of other shocking issues of voter abuse. And found nearly nothing. That looks to me to have been another monetizing of the big lie.

Forbes says it was $6 million, all but $150,000 paid by Trump supporters.
