I'm confused - if no one retires, how are they supposed to provide free child care for their grandchildren while their parents work for slave wages?

When Ben Shapiro walks through a crowd of people, you can almost hear the vaginas snapping shut.

I'm now going to think of that sound every time I hear Shapiro's voice or his name mentioned.

You're out of touch.

Lots of people out here in the real world work back-breaking jobs in 2024. They work 3rd shift which cuts a decade off your life on average. They nurse patients, many of whom in this day and age are overweight or obese - you know how much it messes up a person's back to be constantly lifting and shifting people who weight multiple hundreds of pounds? Etc.

People like you who work desk jobs can already choose to work beyond the retirement ages allowed by SS. For the tens of millions who bust their asses and bodies on a daily basis, I think they deserve to retire when they want to especially since most of them won't enjoy retirement anywhere near as long as highly educated desk jockeys do.

Get back to us when the nature of work really changes for the majority of citizens.

Why?

I like my job, but I certainly do not want to work forever. I'd like to retire now, but I can't really afford to yet; I still have kids in college. I have been working for more than 46 years (not counting "teen jobs") and I have frankly had enough. I want to have some time to enjoy what's left of my life while I still can. I'd like to devote more time to music, and I'd like to do a bit of traveling.

Old people should be getting out of the workforce to make room for younger workers. I don't begrudge anyone who wants to keep working, but my expectation of the American Dream involves some "golden years" of retirement.

Most people who work past age 65 probably do it because either they can't afford to retire or they are doing exactly what they want to be doing for the rest of their lives.

Here if you’re had a chance I would do what I do til the day I die*. I work on safety and that is a boon since the thing that I do will save lives plus the problem solving aspect keeps me far more entertained and enthralled than anyone has any right doing for a paycheck. My biggest problem is my company is quite obviously going down the wrong path and I will likely be kicked out or tossed aside if I don’t hit my breaking point first.

While I understand Sue's point, especially re making room for younger workers to progress, I also do think continuing to work makes sense unless you have a hobby or something else to occupy your time. I have continued working as a consultant for a number of years (generally part time, but some times full) and have enjoyed it; I have also mentored a number of younger workers and participated in the training of them. The "golden years" are nice but, face it, you are not going to travel all the time, and, while I do have hobbies, they are not of the kind that I can occupy most of my time with. I enjoy the challenges and varied experiences my work presents and believe it keeps me sharp (or at least as sharp as I am ). Retirement is not the same for everyone, and I think there is room for those who want to continue to work. Sure.some will have to stop due to physical demands/limitations and others due to problems in dealing with stress (and a lot of "desk work" can be quite stressful), but others can and do continue.

I imagine I will "fully" retire from work (or at least work for pay) within the next few years, but I am still enjoying it and beleieve I am making a contribution.
