The President of Alternative facts asserts that Canada relies on the US for defence.

It would be true to say that we rely on NATO countries for defence. And to be fair, we haven't met our NATO spending target.

It would also be true to say that the US has never actually come to Canada's defence while Canadians came to the aid of Americans, against Japan in WWII. Again, we joined the US in the Korean war. And more recently, we joined the US in Afghanistan.

He also asserts that Canada treats the US badly with free trade. Really? Little o'Canada is the bully here? If every American purchased $0.10 worth of Canadian goods and every Canadian purchased $0.10 worth of US goods, then you could say there is a trade imbalance because the American population is so much bigger, but 10 cents here and 10 cents there is a kind of balance.

He also claimed that Canada doesn't let US banks do business here. This is just flat out wrong. The real problem is that Canada has stricter rules that banks must adhere to. The result is we have the safest banking system in the world. Silicon Bank anyone?

He also claimed that we don't buy American agricultural products. Another bone headed assertion. You can't grow lettuce in the snow.

But, much like the big lie that the 2000 election was stolen, people will believe it all (and more as it comes), and they will regard Canada with growing contempt.

So will end a beautiful friendship.

FUCK NO! I will never stop loving Canada and Canadians, and wishing my accident of birth had occurred there.

I recall years ago, around the time of the Great Recession, seeing a piece on the stability of USA banking versus Canadian banking - and other countries as well. The piece was all about how regulations and restrictions in other, saner countries had resulted in far fewer economic downturns and cataclysms than have occurred here.

Also you people are politer and have a whole lot less filth on the sides of the road, which indicates a more civil society. Lucky fuckers.

I know nothing about banking practices in Canada, but among the business people I know, If a company is listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange, that is regarded as a warning flag to look very carefully. On the other hand, When I was living in Michigan, about half a century ago, coins from Canada were accepted at face value for us dollars, no matter what the exchange rate. The only problem was that dimes from Canada did not work in coin machines.

And the big joke on non Michiganders was that to get to Canada from Detroit, you drove south.

Considering that the TSX lists almost every publicly traded company of any significance in the country, that is a rather bizarre assessment.
