The Treasury Department is considering a Trump $1 coin for 250th US birthday

WASHINGTON – The Treasury Department announced Oct. 3 that it is considering a plan to mint new $1 coins bearing President Donald Trump’s image – and his now-iconic fist-raised posture after being shot – to commemorate America’s 250th birthday.

In swift succession, the story was first reported by Fox News, then confirmed by Treasury Secretary Brandon Beach, and then blasted out by the White House and its Rapid Response 47 social media handle.

All of the posts show a mock-up of a silver coin with Trump’s face on one side and him looking skyward and pumping his fist in the air, as he did when he survived a July 2024 assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Butler, Pa., and was being escorted offstage by Secret Service agents.

“No fake news here. These first drafts honoring America’s 250th Birthday and @POTUS are real,” Beach said in his post on X. “Looking forward to sharing more soon, once the obstructionist shutdown of the United States government is over."

Beach did not respond to a USA TODAY request for comment via X on whether the coin might violate a federal law that prohibits any living person from being on U.S. currency.

"Despite the radical left's forced shutdown of our government, the facts are clear: Under the historic leadership of President Donald J. Trump, our nation is entering its 250th anniversary stronger, more prosperous, and better than ever," the Treasury Department told USA TODAY in a statement. "While a final $1 dollar coin design has not yet been selected to commemorate the United States' semiquincentennial, this first draft reflects well the enduring spirit of our country and democracy, even in the face of immense obstacles. We look forward to sharing more soon."

"A living person may not appear on U.S. currency' (Then there's only one way to make this happen!)

Paper currency is produced by the Treasury Department's Bureau of Engraving and Printing, while coins are handled by the U.S. mint.

In a 2016 article, the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco confirmed that, "a living person may not appear on U.S. currency."

"To avoid the appearance of a monarchy, it was long-standing tradition to only feature portraits of deceased individuals on currency and coin," it said. "That tradition became law with an 1866 Act of Congress."

“No coin issued may bear the image of a living former or current President,” says the federal law − 31 U.S. Code 5112 regarding coin denominations, specifications, and design, according to the Legal Information Institute at Cornell Law School.

Treasury Department officials did not respond to questions late Oct. 3 as to whether any special carve-outs have been established for commemorative coins, including the one that Trump is proposing.

The legislation also mandated that no “head and shoulders portrait or bust of any person, living or dead, and no portrait of a living person may be included in the design on the reverse of specified coins.”
Other commemorative coins

During Trump’s first administration, Congress passed the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 that authorized the Department of the Treasury to issue commemorative coins beginning January 1, 2026, “with up to five different designs emblematic of the U.S. semiquincentennial.”

The law said some of the coins may honor Native Americans and innovators, and one of the 25 cent coins must honor a woman. Commemorative coins honoring the 200th anniversary of the birth of Harriet Tubman, a former slave who helped other slaves escape through the Underground Railroad, were issued in 2024.

"IN GOD WE TRUST" — with an image of Trump surmounting it.   A better slogan would be "TO GOD WE PRAY" !!

I heard the reason IN GOD WE TRUST is on all our coins is that the rest of the statement is 'all others pay cash' and thus use the coin.

This is further evidence that there is no requirement that Trump appointees know anything about the law they are supposed to be faithfully executing.

That's a cute hokey saying that folks like to hang on the wall in little general stores and bars and such.

The truth of course of why "In God We Trust" is on US currency is as a reactionary response to the Red Scare in the Cold War, when we had to assert our difference from the godless communists.

Same with adding "[one nation] under God" to our pledge of allegiance, which in its original form (1892) had no reference to a creator fairy, that was only added by Congress in 1954.

The crazy historically ignorant evangelicals and MAGAts rail endlessly that these references to God are further proof that we are a Christian nation, never mind that the most famous of our founders (Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, Paine, Madison) were deists not Christians, and that Thomas Jefferson, he of the firmest conviction in separation of church and state, actually compiled a Bible that absented the divinity aspects of Jesus and presented his moral teachings alone.

For the true MAGA head, everything/anything is obvious proof that DJ Trump is the manifestation of living truth. The statement on the coin is a generic affirmation of general good feelings toward a generic God, sort of like the Co-xxist bumper sticker made up of various religious symbols.

I see no reason the contradict the understanding that the letters of G-d on the coin could refer to Allah, Elohim, Jehovah, Jesus, Sophia, Siva, . . . or the flying spaghetti monster.

BSG--my understanding is that paper money has contained the motto since the 50s (around the same time "under God" was added to the pledge, but it has been on coins since the mid 19th century.

"In God We Trust" first appeared on a U.S. coin in 1864 on the two-cent piece, following increased religious sentiment during the Civil War. Congress authorized the motto's placement on U.S. coins, and it was first used on the two-cent coin starting that year. The motto was not consistently placed on all U.S. coins until 1955, when Congress passed a law making it mandatory, with the first paper currency bearing the motto appearing in 1957.

From the US mint website:
May 18, 1908, an act was passed by Congress restoring the motto “In God we trust” on the coins of the United States, to take effect thirty days after its passage. The motto appears on all gold and silver coins struck since July 1, 1908, with the exception of the dime.

AN ACT Providing for the restoration of the motto “In God we trust” on certain denominations of the gold and silver coins of the United States.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the motto “In God we trust,” heretofore inscribed on certain denominations of the gold and silver coins of the United States of America, shall hereafter be inscribed upon all such gold and silver coins of said denominations as heretofore.

SEC. 2. That this Act shall take effect thirty days after its approval by the President.

Approved, May 18, 1908.
This became law and covered gold and silver coins, but pennies and nickles came soon after. Since 1937 all coins had the inscription; but the 1957 ct mandated it on all currency as the US motto.

Between the end of the Civil War and 1908, most coins had the inscription, but in 1907 T Roosevelt minted some gold coins without it, prompting the Congressional act.
