Elections 2025

Post by Scooter »

Congrats to Abigail Spanberger and and Ghazala Hashmi who have decisively flipped the governor's and lieutenant governor's chairs in Virginia.

Good to see Mikie Sherrill kicking Cittarelli's ass in the New Jersey governor's race.

Polls about to close in NY>

Just kidding, fingers crossed for NYC’s first democratic socialist mayor.

My source hasn’t called it yet (NPR) but most it definitely looks like that will be the result.

Mikie Sherrill was not even my third choice in the Dem primary, but then again I vote in the Dem primary solely to help push the party leftward. As thoroughly uninspiring as she is, I'm still glad to see her kick Jack Ciattarelli's ass by double digits--a pretty solid repudiation of Trumpism, since Ciattarelli ran as Trump's MAGA butt buddy. Now BigRR is gonna need a new congressperson

I'll be shocked if Prop 50 doesn't pass by a large majority.

I've been really struggling the last couple of weeks; the change in the seasons is probably some of it, and also a flare of cervical radiculopathy waking me up repeatedly in the night and ruining my sleep quality - but the demolition of the East Wing broke my heart and the cancellation of SNAP and WIC has me in a permanent state of rage which is destructive to my mental health.

Last night was such a balm. I felt good after attending the No Kings rally a few weeks ago, but last night I realized I am really, really not alone - and millions of people are willing to stand on line for hours to prevent this motherfucker from ruining our country. I watched the news nonstop from mid afternoon to the very late hours and saw a lot of young people interviewed on line at the polls and I feel really good, that we are in good hands. I watched Mamdani's speech three times and will probably watch it again with my patient later today.

If we get to vote next year, we will cripple him by taking back our House. It's going to be a long slow rebuild and the Democratic Party needs to remove its head from its anus and embrace the progressive politics focused on the working and middle classes that voters want, but we can do it. We can do it. There is reason to look forward with some hope in our hearts.

Now BigRR is gonna need a new congressperson
Hopefully she will appoint someone who will serve the remainder of her term with enough distinction that they will win next year. This is a strange district encompassing democratic and republican counties. I would have preferrred her to remain in congress as she has proven herself to be electable, but now the district will be in play. We'll see how she does as governor but, like sue, I would have preferred a more progressive candidate, and I doubt she will move much left of center now that she is elected. My only hope is that Trump will try to punish NJ (knowing Trump, who doubts this?) and that this will get her back up and force the move.

It would appear that I have won a local seat. Chatting with the workers outside my polling place, there was nobody on the ballot for the "Judge of Elections" and they were brainstorming on someone to get written in. I told them, "Yeah, I wrote my name in" and all conversation stopped. Swinging by later (the polling place is on my route where I walk Marble), the current (and now reelected) Mayor asked me if "I was serious" and if I would serve. I said I would do it and he said, "Good, because we've been telling people to write you in all day."

Looking at the overnight results, there are 109 "unresolved write in" votes cast for that position.

Bravo! There is nothing more important in these times than elections administration and oversight.

Interesting. I briefly considered voting for myself (and my wife promised me her support) as a write-in for the Board of Education locally. Then I discovered that (at least here) you can't just "write-in" George Meade because the only eligible write-in candidates must register quite some time before the election.

If there are any, the Bored of Erections has a list of valid names posted. I suppose it makes sense that if "Mary Smith" received the only vote and was not registered as a write-in candidate, how are election officials supposed to determine (a) which Mary Smith it is and (b) which person claiming to have voted for Mary Smith (and can thus identify her) actually cast that vote (since it's an unknown).

Reluctantly, I said goodbye to my long-term dreams of Washington hegemony for former Civil War soldiers and Saviors of the Union especially. We are so under-represented.

While big ticket races in NY, NJ and VA and Prop 50 in California were the big news last night, this election cycle was not just about blue wins in blue states:

In Georgia, 2 Democrats won state-wide election to the Public Service Commission, the first Dems to win since 2000.
In Mississippi, Dems flipped 2 seats in the state senate, breaking the Republican supermajority.
Local elections in North Carolina and Ohio resulted in some significant Democratic pickups.
In Maine, voters rejected a proposed photo ID requirement for elections.
