Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, former Trump loyalist, says she is resigning from Congress

WASHINGTON (AP) — Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, a once-loyal supporter of President Donald Trump who has become a critic, said Friday she is resigning from Congress in January.

Greene, in a more than 10-minute video posted online, explained her decision and said she’s “always been despised in Washington, D.C., and just never fit in.”

Greene’s resignation followed a public fallout with Trump in recent months, as the congresswoman criticized him for his stance on files related to Jeffrey Epstein, along with foreign policy and health care.

Trump branded her a “traitor” and “wacky” and said he would endorse a challenger against her when she ran for reelection next year.

She said her last day would be Jan. 5, 2026.

The White House did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment Friday night.

Greene had been closely tied to the Republican president since she launched her political career in 2020.

In her video, she underscored her longtime loyalty to Trump except on a few issues, and said it was “unfair and wrong” that he attacked her for disagreeing.

“Loyalty should be a two-way street and we should be able to vote our conscience and represent our district’s interest, because our job title is literally ‘representative,’” she said.

Greene swept to office at the forefront of Trump's “Make America Great Again” movement and swiftly became a lightning rod on Capitol Hill for her often beyond-mainstream views.

As she embraced the QAnon conspiracy theory and appeared with white supremacists, Greene was opposed by party leaders but welcomed by Trump. He called her “a real WINNER!”

Yet over time she proved a deft legislator, having aligned herself with then-GOP leader Kevin McCarthy, who would go on to become House speaker. She was a trusted voice on the right flank, until McCarthy was ousted in 2023.

While there has been an onslaught of lawmakers from both parties heading for the exits ahead of next fall’s midterm elections, as the House struggles through an often chaotic session, Greene's announced retirement will ripple throughout the ranks — and raise questions about her next moves.

Goodbye and good riddance. Not sure what's she's doing, but I trust her as much as I trust Trump.

No, I think she's leaving to take the job of starting wildfires with thhe Jewish Space Lasers; probably pays better than Congress and she can travel. Perfect job for a space cadet.

I'm guessing that MTG was feeling threatened by Trump's gazpacho police.

I’m a little more charitable toward MTG. Don’t trust her but it seems she may have had a Saul on the road to Damascus moment. Time will tell.

I do wonder about the “effective date” of her resignation. The t has been pointed out that it is two days past being qualified for a congressional pension, but, I wonder about it the election laws for filling her seat and if that date effectively keeps her seat open until the election. Another thought: When is the next CR vote in the house?

One thing that I have seen pointed out about MTG that I tend to agree with is that she truly believes the shit she spews. In a way that makes her dangerous, but, it also means she could change if her opinions change (which may be happening) compere that to someone like Lindsay Graham who doesn’t believe any of this and votes this way anyway.

While I’m not convinced that her recent change is “real” or lasting at this point I won’t deprive her of her possible “redemption arc” in whatever form that may take.

This is what I found on the Georgia rules regarding vacancies in the US House of Representatives:
Whenever a vacancy shall occur or exist in the office of Representative in the United States Congress from this state the governor shall issue, within 10 days after the occurrence of such vacancy, a writ of election to the secretary of state for a special election to fill such vacancy, which election shall be held on the date named in the writ, which shall not be less than 30 days after its issuance. Upon receiving the writ of election from the governor, the secretary of state shall then transmit the writ of election to the superintendent of each county involved and shall publish the call of the election.
https://www.ncsl.org/elections-and-camp ... y%20occurs.

So that would suggest a writ must be issued by Kemp by January 15, 2026 and a special election held by February 11, 2026 - unless my maths are wrong?

I'm sure she figured the pension issue into her timing, she would be stupid not to. But her pension, which will be available at age 62 (she's 51), is just 8.5% of her highest 3 year salary average for 5 years of service - it's not nothing but it's not plush, it's a little less than $15k/year.

It says not less than 30 days so it could be (theoretically) longer. That combined with all of the other election year BS may complicate things.

Ah yes, pitfalls of reading the statutory language before I'd gotten my coffee on board.

I guess anything is possible, but given her track record, I doubt it. I think her past idiocy shows he doesn't have the capacity to engineer a deception of this magnitude, but I just think she can't hold a course for very long if she's not the center of attention.
