HAVANA — Fidel Castro confirmed he had resigned from the top leadership of the Cuba Communist Party in an article published on Tuesday, after the party approved a raft of economic reforms.
"Raul knew that I would not accept a formal role in the party today," Castro said in an article on the Cubadebate.cu portal, referring to his brother Raul and his own absence from the party's new Central Committee, elected on Monday.

Castro, 84, had served as first secretary in the Central Committee of the party -- which underpins the country's Communist government -- since the party's creation in 1965.

Fidel said he had handed over the functions of the party head to Raul when he ceded power to his brother because of his own declining health in 2006, though he retained the first secretary title.

"(Raul) has always been who I described as First Secretary and Commander in Chief," Fidel wrote in the article.

"He never failed to convey to me the ideas that were planned," he added.

The move came after the sixth Communist Party Congress approved a flurry of measures on Monday aimed at keeping Cuba's centrally planned economy from collapse but without any broad embrace of market-oriented economic change.

From Liz: She hopes he lives at least 2 years as a vegetable, drooling & shitting his pants, fully concious but completely paralysed. (She is Cuban with absolutely no love for the Castro brothers.)

As has been mountainously documented from the very inception, he is a murdering, lying, thieving bastard.

Hence, much admired by the American Left.

He remains the only living human who can, by his own word, end "El Embargo."

But why should he? It has kept him in power indefinitely, despite 50+ years of abject failure as a "ruler."

Much admired? for the life of me I don't know one pwerson who admires him, although many on the right and left admit he was not as bad as Batista and his ties to the mafia.

his may be why so many on the Left favor the Chinese regime over the Tibetans, no cite so far as i can see, although there are apologists on the left and right (for different reasons, it's not the left who are catering to their dictates to get markets opened) for the China dictatorship

the Palestinians over the Israelis, which has nothing to do with dictatorships vs democratic governments and more with the recgnition of human rights of all peoples; nor is it a condemnation of the israei government, only some of its positions

Castro over democratic Cubans, again, a cite would be nice as well as an identification of "democratic" cubans--who are they?

and even Saddam Hussein or bin Laden over George W. Bush. what a load of crap; I have little use for W or for his BS venture in Iraq, but this is a preference for Saddam or bin Laden? I wouldn't march into Libya either, but it is not due to any preference of Khadaffi over Obama. Even the "good guys" can be wrong.
This is the biggest load of unsupported crap polemic I've seen in a long time.

He is widely admired across Latin America by the right and the left for standing up to the US. Look it up.

He is generally disliked by the left in the US for his human rights abuses but they are just the kind of thing Dick Cheney and BushCo were doing themselves. American conservatives hate Castro for the same reason they hate Soviets, because they are so much like themselves.

When, in the late 50s? I couldn't even read then, so I guess I wasn't. Sorry, I guess that shows hypocrisy on my part.

eta: And to be totally honest, i never condemned Lenin's takeover of Russia in the 20s, or Stalin's brutality shortly thereafter.

There may be the tendency among some people to romanticize certain against the odds types like Castro and Che (Motorcycle Diaries, anyone?). I think the main difference in viewing him positively or negatively, is that some people paint the choice as the corrupt and evil Bautista or the corrupt and evil Castro. Both are recognized as thugs, but one was our "friend" and the other not. Idealists would rather not be associated with a thug who might be your friend and therefore dislike the thug in our camp more than the thug in the other camp.
