Republican presidential candidate Rep. Michele Bachmann told supporters God was sending a message to Washington politicians through the earthquake and hurricane that pummeled the East Coast this weekend, according to a report in the St. Petersburg Times.

The hurricane killed more than 26 people, including at least two children.

While giving a speech about the merits of small government and tea party activism, Bachmann said:

“I don’t know how much God has to do to get the attention of the politicians. We’ve had an earthquake; we’ve had a hurricane. He said, ‘Are you going to start listening to me here?’ Listen to the American people because the American people are roaring right now. They know government is on a morbid obesity diet and we’ve got to rein in the spending.”

You'd think God would work on His aim a bit instead of punishing random innocent people. Call me when there's a standing storm over the Capitol building and White House.

She's been unable to grab a headline since Perry entered the race she had to do something to get her name back in the press.

Tropical Storm Irene has killed 37 people, and authorities warn that flooding could continue for up to three days in northern US states.

More than five million people remain without power, while Vermont is reeling from its worst floods in many decades.

Insurance claims could top $7bn (£4.3bn), the Consumer Federation of America estimated.

The brunt of Irene's impact was felt by towns and suburbs from North Carolina to Vermont.

Driving rains and flood tides damaged homes and cut power to more than three million people in New Jersey, Connecticut and New York alone.

"It was a joke", first thing you learn in Backpedaling 101.

Ironic that she should say it on the anniversary of Katrina hitting land, considering that was also supposedly a punishment for the sins of America.

Listen to the American people … They know the government is on a morbid obesity diet and we’ve got to rein in spending,” Ms Bachmann, a Minnesota congresswoman and Republican presidential candidate, said at a campaign appearance in Florida on Sunday.

A spokeswoman for Ms Bachmann, a devout Christian, did not immediately respond to a query from the Financial Times but she told Talking Points Memo, a news blog, that the comments were clearly meant “in jest”.
It's episodes like this which make US politics such a hoot to follow.

I don't know why they are bothering with all this $$$$$$$$$ wasting nonsense in any case.

Sarah Palin will declare, sweep up the right wing votes, and be the Rep candidate for sure.

Bachmann is running hard for the 'crazy and stupid' vote which is about 70% of the Repuglican base.

Do they have anyone running who isn't this bad? Romney turned out to be a craven coward and a liar when he hit the BIG STAGE. Huntsman is smart, qualified, and not a coward, but the Republican requirement that you be ignorant won't help him a bit.

And be very afraid of this right-wing nut job getting into a greater position of power.

Oh, a joke! 40 dead, billions of dollars in property damage, millions of people still without electricity, state of emergency in 13 states. Hi-larious! By that standard, the tsunami in Japan must have been a real laff riot!

Puuleeese, you're smarter than this stupid comment. I assume you're just trying to start something.

But just in case you're not, the joke was about DC, not about the storm.

Bachmann is the joke. One day she'll look back and recognize that Newsweek photo was a compliment in comparison to the whack job she really is.

Haha, you wish. Using natural disasters as the premise for a "joke" is seldom a good idea for a late-night comedian, and never for a politician. As a "joke" it's senseless and appalling; as a non-joke message to her wingnut religious constituency, it's the worst form of pandering.

No. She made the same sort of boneheaded comments that Robertson et al made after Katrina. Moronic then, moronic now. As is anyone gullible enough to swallow her koolaid and defend her.

Disparaging someone elses religion like that. How sad.

No I have eyes and ears and can watch a video clip with an open mind.
