Palestine?

Post by dgs49 »

International diplomacy is a curious thing. Many true things cannot be said because feelings will be hurt and the statements cannot be taken back. In some ways, it is a wonder that the U.S. bothers with the U.N., but that's a discussion for another day.

Barry has said, basically, that the U.N. ought not grant muckety-muck status to "Palestine" because the real solution (he dared not say, the "Final Solution," I suppose) must be negotiated between the Parties vying for the territory in question.

He might also have said:

The Palestine Authority does not speak for "Palestine" or the Palestinian people. Hamas represents at least as many of the indigenous people as the PA, and they are opposed to this motion, because even requesting it implicitly recognizes the existence of Israel.

"Palestine" claims certain territory that is claimed concurrently by another U.N. member state.

"Palestine" is a terrorist [something] which, as a matter of long-standing routine policy, encourages its people to launch unprovoked attacks on civilians.

The U.N. cannot "recognize" every minority ethnic group seeking recognition, as there are scores of them around the world, and their petitions invariably run counter to the UN's recognition of the countries where they reside (e.g., China, Iraq, the U.S., Canada).

The US will withdraw all economic support to "Palestine" if they go ahead with this petition.

This is not an international situation that particularly lights my fire. Further, I find it more than a little bit nauseating how both of the major political parties in the U.S. grovel before the "mythical" Israel lobby, and I think Barry has done nothing wrong in his failed attempts to jumpstart negotiations. Everybody knows that the '67 borders have to be the starting point for territorial discussions, and pretending that his is an outrage or an insult to anyone is bullshit.
