Will this be Afghanistan's Tet Offensive?

Post by Scooter »

It doesn't seem to be getting major play in U.S. media, but the Taliban have launched a ground assault against the NATO base at Kandahar. This is the third such assault against NATO bases in less than a week. It is the first ground assault against the Kandahar base since the Taliban were overthrown.

But we're winning the war, right? So they keep telling us.

Pull up, get out, sow the ground with salt. Bomb from the air anything that moves near the borders. Otherwise leave it the fuck alone. It's a lost cause.

The aim of our involvement in Afghanistan is .... what, exactly...

If it's to install democratic government, then we will be there forever.

I always thought we should've gone for a confederation with a strong constitution and a week central government and stronger local govts utilizing the local tribal structure already in place.

Gives the powers that be a stake in making it work.
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.

Nice idea, but when you have tribal enmities dating back to when Abdul fucked Amir's favourite goat in 235 BC, then you've no chance of getting agreement on anything there.

that's why they get their local fiefdoms and can vote their own selfish interests in national matters.

When Obama slipped away during Anaconda the whole thing started going south...
